What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late '60s and a minor milestone in animation. The music represents the quartet's zenith--Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The story line, cobbled together by producer Al Brodax and a committee of writers, is a broad, feather-light allegory set in idyllic Pepperland, where the gentle citizens are threatened by the nasty, music-hating Blue Meanies and their surreal arsenal of henchmen, with the Beatles enlisted to thwart the bad guys. Visually, designer Heinz Edelmann mixes the biomorphic squiggles, day-glo palette, and Beardsley-esque portraits of Peter Max with rotoscoped still photographs and film; Edelmann's animated collages also nod to Andy Warhol and Magritte in properly psychedelic fashion, which works wonderfully with such terrific songs.

High orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are (literally) flat archetypes, but that's missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy, campy fun of the visuals. Making sense of the story is second to submerging blissfully in the sights and sounds of this video treat. --Sam Sutherland

Different ending sequence?

I've had this movie on VHS for thirty years or so, and I wanted a DVD copy. Everything was the same until the Beatles got to Pepperland, but then this version had the beatles song "Hey bulldog", which was not on the TV version. And then, where in the TV version Paul shouts "Beatles, to battle!!" with the subsequent battle with the Blue Meanies, that part is missing and the Meanies run away for no reason. I can see a new dvd having parts in it that were cut from the TV version, but why is part of the movie missing in this dvd? Now I have to keep my vhs copy to watch the missing bits. Still love it though. Watching on my plasma set, video quality is very good.

The fab four at their fabbest

This wonderful bit of nostalgia brings back the height of the Beatles era. It offers some wonderful silliness in the music (esp the title song), the plot, the characters and gadgetry, and just about any other way you can think. It's just for fun, with no deeper meaning, and delivers that beautifully. Oh, a bit of cultural commentary slips in, like Jeremy Hillary Boob, PhD, but just enough to keep this from floating completely away.

But now, 45 years after it debuted, it acts as a time capsule, as well. The Beatles themselves are now part of history and cultural background, as are bell-bottom sideburns, imagery in the Peter Max style, psychedelia, rotoscoped animation, and so much more. (Max wasn't involved in this, but his most famous work shares some elements of style.) This brings them all back again, or offers a taste for those too young to remember.

Truly a twentieth-century classic

I love Beatles music and even though the Fab Four didn't contribute their voices to this film I still consider it a Beatles movie. Basic plot is well-known: Pepperland is invaded by Blue Meanies and Young Fred escapes in the yellow submarine to get help. He enlists the aid of John, Paul, George and Ringo (who are spitting images of Pepperland's most famous group, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) and the gang attempts to find Pepperland in the sub. Various psychedelic images and characters appear throughout the film and the story is often nothing more than a device to deploy another song, but the songs are so good that you can usually just sit back and enjoy the music if nothing else. Naturally the lads save Pepperland, teach the Blue Meanies to be nice, and all is right with the world again. Except it was hard to get my grandsons to stop laughing everytime the "nowhere man" character was called "Boob".

Well, after all these years, the "Fab Four" still have it. Thoroughly enjoyable, with plenty of extra 'features' to go along with the main event. There is one caveat though: my edition failed to include the 'collectible' trivia booklet within (others may repeat that gaff) which I found rather disappointing! Btw, the coloring for this film is absolutely phenomenal, long live the 60's... what a decade that was!

the Beatles Yellow Submarine

This is the version my parents didnt get to see at the drive in! The yellow submarine was released in 1968 in Britain and by the time it made the United States it had been edited abit. This here is the restored version with the "hey bulldog" segment that was taken outta the U.S. version for God knows what reason. That scene is concidered favorite by many. The dvd comes with a really cool booklet, but since i bought my copy used, the booklet was not in it. This made so little difference to me though, since ive grown up with this movie and its such a part of my life that i couldnt care less if it had been shipped to me in a plain white box. Just to own this wonderfully whimsical psycedelic adventure to watch over and over again at my leisure was all i needed. the colour is vibrant and beautiful , a far cry from the version they used to show on television way back when they had turn knobs and antennae. its got a little making of-featureette and interviews with some of the cast and crew and subtitles, so you can really memorise the whole movie and sing along! This is a definate must for Beatles fans and even small children-everyone can fall in love with The Yellow Submarine!

One for the Bunker.

This was one of my favorite movies. It also featured four previously unreleased songs at the time. Like the Beatles cartoons, it wasn't the Beatles who voiced the characters, but they did make an appearance at the end. In chronicle order, this was the last we'd see of the smiling lads getting along. Then came the animosity of let it be, but this is an experience that we'd like to remember. You know the story-Blue Meanies attack Pepperland so Old Fred seeks the help of the Fabs who not only come back with him, and an enjoyable adventure it is too, and not only saves the land and it's people from the Blue Meanies, but Unites both parties through music. Another one of my favorite characters is Boobie. If you wanted a real life version of this, go back to '89 and the fall of the Soviet Union. I got this for my grandson, and of course I raised my own on this!
