- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2024Great older movie. Sad story, but it was well told. Truth is definitely better than fiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2023I normally don't like Sean Penn, but he was excellent in this film. This is a classic film that involves a lot of cloak and dagger, A political film that takes place during those turbulent 70's. A film with drama and suspense, one of 2 films I enjoyed with Sean Penn. The other is The Game, which is a 360 from this film; but great.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2023Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn deliver great performances in this spy drama. John Schlesinger directs this film from the relationship of two friends that are very, very different and who get into the obscure world of the spy business without having a clue. They are soon swallowed up. Released in 1985, a great year for movies, this movie didn't get much attention. I recommend it. It's well done and worth seeing.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2001Most of the other positive reviews offer good insights to the film, which I must've seen 5 or 6 times - each time appreciating it a bit more, or discovering some nuance that slipped by me before. For example...in my most recent viewing, I caught a part where the Timothy Hutton character (Christopher Boyce) tells his girlfriend that he's named his falcon, " 'Fawkes'...he's a guy who tried to blow up Parliament" (Guy Fawkes). If a true aspect of this true story, I find it reveals a bit more about what may have occupied the troubled soul of Boyce that he would name a pet in honor of a lead conspirator in "The Gunpowder Plot" of 1605. The story takes place in the mid-70's...in another time, would Boyce have loaded a Ryder rental truck with a fertilizer bomb and parked it next to a federal target? Both actors - Sean Penn & Timothy Hutton - performed superbly, though I am more intellectually drawn to the "deeper" character played by Hutton, and more interested in what drives him. The film begins with him abandoning a seminary...he had a theological faith that he lost for some reason, he seems to not have much faith in his family life, and now he's about to completely lose his patriotic faith. It's sad. By the way, to the reviewer who didn't understand why he ripped open the stuffed-owl gift from a co-worker...the paranoia was kicking in and he was looking for a bug ("where's the wires!?").
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2018A well done, condensed version of the fabled Christopher Boyce spy case that covers the era between Boyce leaving seminar school and imprisonment (this predates his escape attempts and thereafter).
Well acted all around (with forgivable thumbnailed characterizations for a movie that runs 130 min already).
But the essence of a multi-faceted conflicts are there for Boyce. Family traditions that run into politics and cultural values, the post-60's culture clash, the 70s Me generation, post-Nixon loss of faith in government, immoral CIA operations, Soviet threats, a deep long-running friendship being torn apart by the need to survive and finding a place in the world, idealism vs cynicism, hard won maturity found at the end of a road going off a cliff. It's all there on the screen.
Thought provoking, worthy of a sit down with grown teens.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2023A True story starring two of the greatest actors in the last forty years-Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2019Saw this when it was first released and watched it again recently on Prime. It just goes to show you there are some folks you shouldn't mess with, namely the KGB and the NSA. Both are unforgiving of mistakes made by a couple of young guys who should have known better. Both of these guys are still alive, hopefully a lot smarter than when they lived the events in this movie. Watch it!

harry georgatosReviewed in Australia on May 15, 20234.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful spy story
True life story of of two friends, one working for the CIA exposed to sensitive secrets and the other friend a reckless drug dealer: A partnership damned to be doomed. Selling CIA secrets to the Russians based on naive schoolyard politics. Both friends espionage journey meets the full force of United States government. Well told story from the director of THE MARATHON MAN and a genuine curiosity for fans of spy espionage movies.
