I cut it in 1" strips and tried it with just water to see if it would scratch the porcelain. It did not, and the stains came off in minutes. I didn't even need the Barkeeper's Friend. The next time I use it I will wear gloves though, because it does slowly disintegrate when you use it in water and the particles are tiny and could possibly irritate or maybe get into your skin.
I have attached a photo of a tub drain and a toilet where the right side has been cleaned with the screen, and the left side was not so you can see the difference.

I read a random article on the internet that said to use fine drywall sanding screens and Barkeeper's Friend for hard water stains in the toilet. I am living in a 30yo rental with original fixtures with these stains in every toilet and sink/tub drain.
