- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2022Love Story was THE tear-jerker of 1970-71, an enormously popular film I saw with my teen friends a few months after its release, and that we giggled at while adult ladies were pulling out their hankies and tissue only 10 minutes into the first reel. Obviously, they had seen Love Story before, and however many times they'd seen it since the first, the movie still affected them so much that tears flowed freely before Oliver (Ryan O'Neal) and Jenny (Ali MacGraw) could even meet.
For decades, I never bothered to see Love Story again. Then I decided to give it another chance when we still had video rental stores. I thought it was awful, but I perversely enjoyed it. There was something so innocent and earnest about it, and there was real chemistry between O'Neal and MacGraw (who I like as an actor, particularly in the Getaway with Steve McQueen). If you haven't seen Love Story, it would probably be wise to give a look on Prime Video or some streaming service before buying. If you already like it, then Paramount's 50th anniversary 4K blu-ray release is a good purchase. I had the old DVD, which looked pretty washed out and uninteresting. This newly restored blu-ray brings out some surprising visual quality—surprising because I don't remember the movie looking particularly impressive on the big screen when I saw it eons ago.
Overall, a nice presentation of a movie that is somewhat historic (for its initial effect & popularity) and very much a time capsule of its day. For sensitive ears, be aware there is some foul language, as Jenny is a "spitfire" of sorts, a wry observer of life from the RI working class—and of course, we all curse like crazy in RI. (Or used to.)

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2022caught some of the music playing on another show and it reminded me that my son and wife had never seen this classic. i saw the cut for television version several times in my youth. the extra features included show how close this was to being never made by Paramount and how the original cut was deemed ineffectual. what we now know as a timeless classic with its musical score the soundtrack for the 1970's was very nearly a flop in its original form. keep the kleenex box close by because the final released version is still able to engage the viewer as few other movies can.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2007The last time I saw "Love Story" was on a network showing circa 1976 on the family black-and-white when I was twelve and my sister was thirteen. What do you know about love at that age but my sister was all blubbery. I've just celebrated my first wedding anniversary with my wife and I wanted to get her a quintessential romance flick so why not but..."Love Story". Unless you've never been in love or are inherently cynical you can't appreciate how this film captures the experience of being totally immersed in another person. The film's catchphrase, "Love means never having to never say your sorry" doesn't seem that corny. Even the film's tragic conclusion doesn't seem contrived or manipulative. I think it helps that the film's stars, Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw, have kinetic chemistry even though I believe they were married to others at the time(MacGraw was married to Paramount honcho Robert Evans). An interesting dichotemy here is how the film presents O'Neal and MacGraw's fathers. O'Neal is saddled with a rich controlling father (Ray Milland) whereas MacGraw's father (John Marley) is a widower and MacGraw kind of assumes the spousal role in her relationship to him. Now I don't know if that explains the attraction between the two leads but it's interesting food for thought. "Love Story" kind of get's short shrift these days, dismissed by some as more of a dated cultural phenomenon than a great film, which is a shame. "Love Story" is a film where you have to shed your reservations or inhibitions and accept it for what it is.
