Quick recommendation for the new BLU-RAY foreign import

Clementine was just released by Fox proper in India. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy—though it mystifies me how Fox determines which films deserve an American Blu release. In short, if you’re on the fence about an upgrade from DVD and get a chance, BUY THIS.

It’s definitely a region-free disc, and the clarity of the picture is such that I thought I was seeing this film for the first time (instead of the 27th.) Who’d have thought Fonda’s Sunday go-to-meetin’ suit had a pattern? Why does Cathy Downs have so much powder on her face? Holy crap! Victor Mature actually employs subtle facial gestures that have been entirely lost up until now! And Ford’s use of shadow and texture may be the most artful and dramatic of all black-and-white movies, including the Film Noir classics usually lauded for such. This print must have been meticulously remastered; it’s clean as a whistle.

The DTS mono soundtrack is an improvement, as well. No pops or hisses. Silence is truly silent, and the dialog is, for once, crisp. Gunshots had me sitting up on my couch in surprise--and I knew full well when they were coming. Sure, it’s nothing like today’s babbling blockbusters, but who’d want it to be?

I’m a big fan of this film. I saw it 40 yrs. ago for the first time and have watched it repeatedly since then. But I’ve never seen it like this. Buying this was the best $30 I've spent in decades.

Extraordinary print from Criterion

A superior western with Victor Mature's best performance (although generally not considered a great actor). More importantly, the directing and cinematography are iconic and beautiful. Henry Fonda does some of his best work here (along with Grapes of Wrath), and proves the much needed anchor to an unusual and genre busting narrative. Often poetic and sublime, a must-see for western lovers and anyone interested in movies.

If you're looking for a western that goes beyond the traditional storytelling devices, I highly recommend this, as well as Red River, Heaven's Gate (Cimino's cut), Ford's Stagecoach, Eastwood's Unforgiven and the spaghetti masterpieces The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. In fact, My Darling Clementine alongside Once Upon a Time... is a staggering double feature for a great evening of pizza with cinema-philes. And if that seems too pretentious, just enjoy the movies solo with a bottle of your choice. Truly great stuff to behold.

This was an upgrade from the DVD for me. I will probably always want the CC version of a classic film when available.
Vintage John Ford. Familiar to admirers of his work are the men's chorus, the exquisite compositions, the texture of the locations, and the wonderful use of character actors.
This recounting of the Wyatt Earp/Tombstone conflict in the 1880's indulges in human scale myth. Character driven with a subdued romance, and Henry Fonda at his most graceful and charming as a man comfortable with action but not so much in social interactions.
Walter Brennan excels as the mean head of the Clanton family. He so often played the eccentric old coot,. it is easy to forget he could be effective when cast properly in less characteristic roles.
A typical beautiful CC Blu-ray production.

Western Antiwestern?

I don't know what to say, this is an antiwestern and after taking a look at the prerelease version (which is not Ford's first cut of the movie) I think I prefer that version, especially because of the last scenes: Wyatt and Morgan Earp leave and say goodbye to the citizens, Wyatt does not give Clementine a kiss on the cheek which is an essential act for Ford. It implies that Wyatt might go back to Tombstone or that he might wander through the wilderness of the West in order to get rid of evil rustlers or stage robbers while in the theatrical version the kiss implies that Wyatt will probably go back to Tombstone because Clementine waits for him. Stylistically and visually Ford shows his incredible skill as usual but I prefer other westerns made by Ford. Nevertheless recommended.

There was just something about Henry Fonda you had to love and here he is in one of most famous roles. Often wooden, in movement, that characteristic serves him well here as he portrays Wyatt Earp, who, along with his remaining brothers, promises to rid Tombstone of the dreaded Clanton gang. The casting is no less than perfect and, under the direction of John Ford, they are superb. Walter Brennan, as Old Man Clanton, gives a chilling and out of usual character performance as the head of the family of cold blooded, calculating, cattle rustling killers. Victor Mature as Doc Holliday and Linda Darnell as Chihuahua are a great combination and add much to the story surrounding the famous Gunfight at the O K Corral. Tim Holt & Ward Bond, as Virgil and Morgan, round out the Earp brothers, who are also avenging the murder of their youngest brother, James, killed by the Clanton's and John Ireland as Billy Clanton gives the role enough venom and cowardice to make him a well hated figure! A must see, must have film.

Hey sports fans. I've been wanting to add some classic films to the collection. I was looking for a western, in B&W. In my research, I found that most had My Darling Clementine in their top-10. I'm very glad to have this in my collection, money well spent. I went with the Blu-ray version. My copy also had a 7-page booklet, talking about this film. Fabulous remaster of terrific John Ford western.......I've loved this
movie since I first saw it on TV when I was a little kid. Atmospheric,
not-too-factual though, gorgeous cinematography, fabulous cast,
SCARY Walter Brennan as the Senior Clanton! Henry Fonda is
outstanding as Wyatt Earp. Well worth the $$!
