I read the reviews before purchasing. My sister gifted me a Studio Ghibli set as an adult. Some of these movies would play at times, but they were always touchy. I don’t think they were formatted for US dvd/blue-ray system. When it wouldn’t play Kiki’s Delivery Service anymore, I knew I would have to purchase another format I could rely on. I didn’t realize there were two versions. I read the reviews. I knew the music in the set I had was not in English, so I assume it is the newer version.. However, I was interested in the older version because they stated characters were missing in the newer version, the ending was different, and Gigi’s lines were different. I watched both versions close together to compare. -Both movies had the same characters and endings. In the older version (on the left in the picture), Gigi’s meow sounded sarcastic, like he was pretending to talk like a cat still, but he never said actual words again in either movie. -Some of Gigi’s lines were missing in the newer version (on the right in the picture), but this did not change the plot or his character at all. In fact, I kind of thought he talked a lot in the older version. When watching the newer version, I did miss his commentary when he was hitting on the white cat, but then again, I wouldn’t want my little boy to think this was an appropriate way to talk to someone. -When Kiki went with her artist friend, they hitch hiked. I like the scene in the older version better. In the older version, the driver of the first car yells at them to get out of the road. I felt like this made it clearer that the driver was being rude, and made the artist’s comment more necessary. The driver did not say anything in the newer version. -I really enjoyed the music in English. I agree with the other reviews on that, which is why I am keeping the older version. I don’t think you will want to keep both versions. They are practically the same in my opinion.

One of the most incredible things about the filmography of Hayao Miyazaki happened in 1988 when they released delightful 'My Neighbor Totoro' as part of a double feature in Japan. (The other film was 'Grave of the Fireflies' and these films had to wait a while to gain deserved popularity they have now after repeated showings in theaters and re-runs on TV.) You believe that? double feature program of new films, one of which is Miyazaki's!

One year later, in 1989, things suddenly changed when 'Kiki's Delivery Service' was released theatrically. I clearly remember watching it the first show of the first day, which started very early in the morning, and the theater was already full-packed. Since then, Miyazaki and his films have been Japan's household name.

'Kiki's Delivery Service' which is based on a children's book by Kadono Eiko shows what a good animation film can do without violence, CGIs, or obligatory musical scenes. It's about a girl Kiki who must leave her house flying on a broomstick in order to live alone among the strangers. Kiki, warm-hearted, strong-willed, but still a novice witch, must learn many things in this town where she gets a job at a kind baker's -- and of course her job is delivery service of the film title.

There is one hair-raising big action sequence, but the film' charms are all based on credible characters including Jiji a talking cat, Tombo (meaning dragonfly in Japanese) a boy who dreams of flying, and Ursula, an artist living in the woods. Even minor characters are memorable not because they are eccentric but because they are realistic, like someone among your relatives or friends you no longer meet but still remember.

The film is entertaining and fun for kids and adults alike, and is strongly recommended, as well as Miyazaki's 'Totoro,' another favorite of mine.

[ENGLISH VERSION] English-dubbed versions of non-English films are often criticized for many reasons, but I didn't find anything wrong with this version featuring the voice of Kirsten Dunst as Kiki's. Interestingly in Japanese original version the voice of Jiji is played by actress Sakuma Rei while in American by Phil Hartman. The voices sound considerably different with Sakuma's high-pitched voice. If you have a chance to see the original version, compare them.

[JAPANESE VERSION] Just one trivial thing about this original version which I hope might interest you. ONE THING YOU SHOULD KNOW is that in the original version, the voices of Kiki and Ursula were played by same actress Takayama Minami. The casting is intentional, suggesting that independent woman Ursula shows the image of younger Kiki in the future. This clever idea is not somehow used in the English-dubbed version, in which Janeane Garofalo provides Ursula's voice.

But whichever version you see, one thing I am sure: 'Kiki's Delivery Service' is beautiful, immaginative, and most of all fun. You will love it, trust me.

I love Studio Ghibli films, and Kiki's Delivery Service is one of my all time favorites. I already owned this film on DVD years ago, but I just had to upgrade to a Blu-Ray copy when it came out. The image quality is fantastic, although I have to admit sometimes I'm a little hard pressed to see much noticeable improvement in the Blu-Ray format. This purchase also has the added benefit of making my niece happy. She's also a big fan of Studio Ghibli, and now she gets my older DVD copy as a hand me down.

For those of you unfamiliar with the plot of Kiki's Delivery Service, it is a delightful tale of a young witch's first year living away from her Mother. In the story this year separation is a mandatory part of every young witch's apprenticeship. Kiki and her cat/familiar Jiji travel to a big city where she establishes herself a delivery service in order to earn her keep. She meets a young boy who is crazy about flight and flying machines, and the first embers of a romance begins to develop. Kiki has to overcome a crisis of confidence that robs her of her witch's powers, in time to perform a daring rescue. The story is told with the lush animation, quality storytelling, and a beautiful soundtrack that are all the earmarks of a Studio Ghibli production. Usually if I have any complaints about a Studio Ghibli production, it has to do with the voice actors brought in to dub the film into english. In this case however Disney did a fine job of finding appropriate voices to match the characters.

All in all this is a good family movie that is enjoyable by kids and adults alike. I highly recommend this film for any family's movie library.

While this is a fine movie in English, it definitely gives a different (lesser) experience because of the cat's voice. In English, he sounds like a loud American cartoon character, even goofy sometimes. In Japanese, he sounds like what an actual cat might talk like -- if it could talk. That gives him an enchanting, charming feel that is lost in Disney's translation. With the English version, you are VIEWING an entertaining story with a cat that sounds like a man, trying to be funny. With the Japanese, you ARE IN a strange, fantastic world that intersects our own, where you listen in on a small, delightful creature chatting with his human companion.

One other criticism of the English version: at the key moment where the artist is encouraging Kiki, the artist says our special abilities mysteriously come from God (as I am told by Japanese friends). That is changed in English to "inspiration." "God" is removed. That is a significant change of an author's writing. What is a suggestive, reflective literary layer in Japanese becomes an almost trite "find your own inspiration" (like "follow your dream"). It is a rare story that can talk about God without sounding preachy or overbearing. Sadly, we lost that distinctive quality in the English version.

I urge others to set the DVD for Japanese language, give the sub-titles a chance, and allow yourself to enter into a foreign experience -- which is the better for being foreign. That is a large part of Miyazaki's charm, a charm that is diminished when we try to make the characters sound like they are Americans. While the Japanese is not always essential in Miyazaki's films, I have found it so in this case (and in the case of Castle in the Sky, where in Japanese the two kids sound more like real kids, a girl and a boy who sound MUCH more intense at crucial, powerful moments in the film, vulnerable kids we care about).

5.0 out of 5 stars Ghibli's most popular film comes to Blu Ray. But with one small caveat.
Reviewed in Canada on November 19, 2014
Kiki's Delivery Service was the very first Studio Ghibli movie ever licensed and distributed by Disney and it is still considered by many of us to be one of the very best family movies that has ever been made! So it is nice to see it re-issued yet again in a bluray edition but there is one little caveat that I will get to later.

The story is simple and sweet and utterly charming. Set in a mid-50's type world of black and white TV's, trams and automobiles. It's a world in which witches are completely normal (though rather rare) and on their 13th birthdays; they have to venture out into the world to advance their training and decide how they will use their gifts of magic. And so our plucky heroine ends up in a small city by the sea that hasn't seen young witches in decades. It's quite a revelation for both sides!

It's an utterly wonderful tale of a young girl passing from childhood into adulthood; overcoming her own fears and doubts and of an absolutely wonderful supporting cast from the boy with a crush on her to the baker and his wife who offer her a place to stay. Not to mention the city folk having to come to terms with a young flying witch in their midst!

In fact that's one of the very best parts of this movie; there's really no superhero's or villains in the entire movie. Just ordinary folk going about their ordinary lives. Some are friendly, some are neutral while others may be a little arrogant or even a little rude or greedy but there's nobody who's really bad. And unlike a lot of movies, family or otherwise; there's no villainous plot and no violent ending. Just a wonderful uplifting movie that teaches you don't have to settle things with force and that girls don't always have to depend on a boy to protect them. Unless of course they want him to! It's a perfect family movie especially if you have young girls. (Though boys will love it too.)

Animation is first rate as always and is even better on this Blu Ray bringing out every nuance of the movie's original release. (Though the DVD is pretty damn good as well.) Plus there's a nice little collection of extras (non of which is overly long) that have been carried over from the previous DVD release and the stereo pro-logic track has been bumped up to a DTS-HD 2.0 for the English, Japanese and French tracks. Not that I noticed much difference since the original 1989 film had a very simple audio track.

However, here is where that little caveat comes in. Kiki's Delivery Service along with Castle in the Sky (Laputa) have had two different English Disney soundtracks over the years. The original l998 soundtrack (on the 2005 DVD) which was enhanced with new English opening and closing songs, some boosted sound effects and other musical embellishments where it was quiet on the Japanese release and quite a bit of additional ad-libbing from Phil Hartman's Jiji which considerably livened up the dub.

However in 2010 when the DVD was re-released; Disney revised the English track to adhere more closely to the original Japanese track. This resulted in cutting out the two English songs as well as a good number of the embellishment and crowd comments and as a result this newer version feels slightly more flat to me than the older 2005 version did (though it's still wonderful) and as a result could prove disappointing to some. So when you read a review claiming that the movie has been cut or it's not as good as it used to be; this is what they really are referring to!

So like last years release of the Castle in the Sky BD; some of us feel that the original English dubs of Kiki and Castle should have been kept or at least included along with their newer English dubs so that viewers could get whichever they preferred. As this is one of those rare situations where many otaku feel the original English enhancements actually improved these two movies. And in the case of Kiki's Delivery Service, made a great movie even slightly better! So like Castle if you have and/or loved the original English DVD releases, you may want to hold onto them just in case. Of course if you've never heard the 2003 release of Castle or the 2005 release of Kiki then you won't miss the differences and will be perfectly happy as they're still wonderful soundtracks.

As for the movie itself, despite that little caveat; this is a movie that will still wow you whichever version you watch! Though in a quiet and unassuming way. It's a virtually perfect family movie and I've never seen anyone who didn't fall in love with it at first sight. I consider it one of the top ten family animated movies of all time! 5 big stars out of 5!

Lunga vita!

5.0 out of 5 stars A high point for Ghibli

Of all the children's films produced by Ghibli, I feel this is by far the best that I have seen. The story is terrific and the heroine extremely admirable. Whilst I can't imagine any children not being enchanted by the tale of a young witch who flies off on her broomstick to learn her craft in an unfamiliar European city (albeit one that is so picturesque that it would surely have a Michelin guide of its own if it existed in reality) and establishs her own delivery service to the delight of the local residents. This sees her embark on numerous adventures, meeting both pleasant and not so nice people and encountering a number of mishaps, not least the inability to make her broomstook fly. Add a wise cracking cat and a touch of gentle humour and you have the classic recipe for a great family film. There are also some terrifically exciting moments that contrast nicely with some of the observations made by characters that are quite profound. I also liked the addition of the vintage airplane and the airship which features in the film's climax.

Although Disney seemed to have a knack of giving their cartoon characters memorable personalities through a combination of good scripts and fine actors, watching a film like "Kiki's delivery service" is demonstrative of just how superior the Japanese studio is. Disney may be happy to crank out unimaginative films that lazily seek the box office jackpot but Ghibli have never forgotten the fact that film making is an art and their efforts lovingly abound with care and attention to detail that couples good stories with lavishly drawn images which are a feast for the eyes. In addition, those people put off by the saccharine and sentimental nature of much of Disney's work will find much to admire in stories which are underlined with strong morals whcih never feel maudlin. In effect, this is about as good as children's films can be and is of sufficient interest to keep most adults entertained too.

I think anyone familiar with the Ghibli films is well aware of the quality of the backgrounds but this , in my opinion, is extremely good even by the standards they have set themselves. The skies are always hugely impressive in these films but the cityscape in "Kiki" is breath-taking in the way that it has been depicted and in my opinion better than anything in the rather over-praised "Spirited Away." All in all, Kiki remains one of Ghibli's most endearing and fully defined creations. This film has everything in it's favour and I recommend it unreservedly. Impossible to award this film anything less than 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein drolliger Ghibli-Klassiker
