Track for track, this is Simon & Garfunkel's best album. By 1968, Simon had shed his more precious tendencies as a songsmith. Meanwhile, the duo and coproducer/engineer Roy Halee had become adept studio technicians. "America" and "Mrs. Robinson" displayed the kind of sonic breadth that would flower even more fully two years later with "The Boxer" and "Bridge over Troubled Water." Bits of whimsy ("Punky's Dilemma," "At the Zoo") and melancholy ("Old Friends," "A Hazy Shade of Winter") complete this autumnal album. (The 2001 reissue adds two bonus tracks, including a demo of "Old Friends.") --Steven Stolder

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024If you’re reading this review, odds are good you’re familiar with Simon & Garfunkel, and as was the case with each progressive release from the duo, the quality continued to increase. Paul Simon, possibly the greatest songwriter to ever grace this world, continued to grow both musically and as a lyricist. If the beautiful harmonies in songs such as “America” and “Old Friends” weren’t moving enough on their own, the witty lyricism present throughout the album will surely explain why Simon & Garfunkel were, are, and always will be considered master craftsmen. The remastering on these studio releases is far superior to that of any of the best of compilations or box sets I have heard from these legends. And the inclusion of bonus tracks on the physical CD releases, certainly makes it worthwhile to purchase them in CD format. “You Don’t Know Where Your Interests Lie” is particularly enjoyable.
Their penultimate release, making the outstanding “Bridge Over Troubled Water” that much more bittersweet as it seems they still had so much to offer the world together.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2023I really do like this album. Not too crazy about any of their other albums, but this is a rather emotive collection of songs. Even the humorous songs on here are more lively than a lot of their other stuff. The only song I don't really care for on here is "Mrs. Robinson" It's OK, I guess, but doesn't have enough going on in it lyrically or musically to keep my interest. "At The Zoo" is one of those kinds of songs that feels like it's saying something really profound and maybe it is, but the elephino whatitis... Like Men At Work's seminal song "Down Under", you just KNOW there's a "deeper meaning" to it all...I was kind of surpised that this folky singer songwriter duo came up with "Save The Life Of My Child", as it begins with what sounds like some kind of synthesizer and then continues on with some layered vocal effects. It's hard to talk too much about this album without being pretenious and blowing it out of proportion...I honestly don't listen to it that often, but I really don't listen to most albums that often. The more noteworthy the record the more seldom I listen to it so as to keep from becoming numb to the experience, which for me tends to occur quickly.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2016Richly atmospheric to the point that a specific time (1968) and place (the city) and even chronological age (70, in the case of "Old Friends") can be felt and heard as if I am there. In that year, during that time. I wasn't even born yet. Heck when I listen to this album I can even feel the cold, crisp wind whipping newspapers and garbage around the streets of the city. A record that can do that to your senses is a treasure. I bought this album after watching their performance on The Andy Williams Kaleidoscope Company from 1968 on GetTV. It has been shown multiple times in recent months on that channel, and every time I see it in the programming schedule, I make sure to watch it again. And every time it affects me profoundly and equally. "Old Friends" has to be the saddest piece of music ever recorded! I cannot come out of watching that performance without bawling my eyes out to the point of dehydration. Listening to Old Friends, I become one of the two older gentlemen sitting there on that park bench, probably wearing fedoras and knee-length hounds tooth-patterned overcoats, smoking cigarettes, and feeding the pigeons; quietly wondering where did my life go and what happened to all the years, and how did I arrive at this point? Seriously, on the sadness level, it's on par with the opening sequences of the movie "Up", when the Ed Asner character's wife dies. If not even sadder! But that's what keeps me coming back to it again and again. It just moves me. Incidentally, I wonder why Art Garfunkel didn't carry lead more often than Paul Simon. I personally prefer Garfunkel's voice, though they blend together perfectly.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2021Their 4th album, with one of my favorite songs: America (...Michigan seems like a dream to be now...It took me 4 days to hitch hike from Saginaw and I've come to look for America). Their is a sadness and a poignancy to this album, imo, but it is beautiful nonetheless. I remember hearing this record, back in the day, and bought the CD because my car doesn't have a record player (yes, they were once available as a factory-installed option in some older Chryslers!)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2020There is no better S&G album than Bookends. No weak songs or filler material to be found, just great music throughout the album and some of their most popular hits. Paul Simon's lyrics are as clever and thought-provoking as ever and wonderfully nostalgic for those of us who remember this music from when it was new. If you're an S&G fan at all, this is a must have album!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2020Consistently good from first song to last. Beware: “Punky’s Dilemma” might be the catchiest song Paul Simon ever wrote - will get in your head and stay there: soon enough, you’ll be wishing you were an English muffin, about to make the most out of a toaster. So go ahead: ease yourself down, and come up brown!

浦Reviewed in Japan on March 23, 20255.0 out of 5 stars S&Gの1968年発表の傑作アルバム!

\m/arcolinoReviewed in Germany on June 23, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Die musikalisch verpackte Geschichte vom "Älterwerden" und "Altsein"!
"Save the Live of my Child", "Fake it" und vor allem "A hazy Shade of Winter" sind richtig kraftvoll und dynamisch.
Die Soundcollage "Voices of old People" war damals sehr innovativ, man könnte sagen ausgesprochen progressiv.
Diesen würde ich dann "America", "Old Friends", "A hazy shade of Winter" und natürlich "Mrs. Robinson" empfehlen.
