I saw this movie in the theaters when it first came out. It left an impression upon me. A tragic story of one person while another person comes to age. I think the story is very well done and love the actors.

This movie always takes me back to my tweenie years. It was my first movie about the pain and wonder of that moment you leave youth behind. But the best part was the beautiful canvas of the Hamptons in Long Island during a lazy, quiet summer. You can almost taste the salt air.

This movie will touch your heart and funny bone!

Hollywood writer Herman Raucher had been pitching his fictionalized memoir Summer of ‘42 since the early 1950s, but no studio wanted it. Finally director Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) read the screenplay and liked the setting, emotional tones, and characters. He realized the story could be produced with inexpensive locations, an affordable cast, and no expensive special effects. That made it a low-risk project with a budget of only $1 million.

One year prior, model Jennifer O’Neill had co-starred with John Wayne in her first lead movie role, in the western Rio Lobo. O’Neill and her agent read the script for Summer of ‘42 and saw the potential for artistic and commercial success.

Unfortunately, Mulligan and Raucher visualized the character of “Dorothy” to be at least 30 years old, and refused to audition anyone under that age. O’Neill and her agent campaigned for an audition, arguing that the maturity difference between 22 (O’Neill’s age) and 15 (the fictional “Hermie’s” age) was sufficient for dramatic purposes.

Location scouts discovered the west coast town of Mendocino, California could fill in nicely for the story’s east coast location in Nantucket. Hundreds of local residents participated as extras and helpers.
Participants say the eight weeks of principal photography went well and finished on schedule. For more than half a century, Mendocino has organized “filming location walking tours” and reunion showings of the movie. You can easily find online videos of "what was filmed where" and a 50th anniversary cast reunion interview.

The structure of the story alternates between tender, sweet scenes with Hermie and Dorothy, and humorous embarrassing scenes featuring Hermie and his friends. Director Mulligan managed to elicit pitch-perfect performances from the inexperienced cast. The scenes of the movie theater, the pharmacy, and the nighttime dunes on the beach have become classics. Storytellers from Shakespeare to Chaplin have alternated comedy with pathos to provide emotional contrast. It intensifies the enjoyment of this film. The novelization of the screenplay became a runaway bestseller, quickly going through 23 printings.

With soft filters and a luscious score by Michel Legrand, Summer of ‘42 turned out to be a “high audience response” movie, evoking laughter and heartbreak. It was nominated for over a dozen awards, including four Academy Awards. The fictional "Dorothy" would have been born over a century ago, but lives on as an iconic character in literature.

Like a beloved book, poem or song, this movie touches the imagination to convey what words cannot express. It was a surprise hit at the box-office, becoming the fifth-highest-grossing film of 1971. It has been beloved ever since by millions of movie fans.

The current blu-ray of Summer of ‘42 showcases the original print in pristine perfection. The only special feature is the theatrical trailer.

I just had to get this movie just so I could remember it from when I first saw it at the movies in the early 70s and to see the similarites from the movie The Inkwell (1994). Even my youngest daughter noticed the similarities watching it by herself. The only differences are; when the setting took place in the summer of 1942 from 1976, Nantucket Island from Martha's Vineyard, not white but African American. Both young teen males lost their virginity to older married woman, Summer of 42 she lost her husband in the war; The Inkwell, the husband was cheating on her, both women are sad and found comfort in these young men. The Inkwell being a little more funnier, Summer of 42 was still GOOD, SAD and SWEET (like another person puts it)and had some funny scenes too. Like Hermie going to the Drug Store trying to buy condoms (rubbers, hahah!!) and Oscy (Hermie's best friend)trying desperately to get his 1st lay and trying to follow instructions from a Medical book on foreplay leading to sex and exceeding it...haha!! Also Summer of 42 the possibilites of that happening to a normal young man was more realistic. In The Inkwell Lorenz Tate's character was a too weird and awkward teenage boy almost like Benji, Hermie's other best friend who was just too shy to be with girls his own age. But in the end that's something Hermie will never forget and will cherish for the rest of his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toller, wenn auch gezielt nostalgischer Film
Reviewed in Germany on May 20, 2022

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful yet stirring coming of age movie.
Reviewed in Canada on March 8, 2019
When I first saw this movie years and years ago, I could relate to many aspects of Herman's thoughts. He was confused and yet wanting to know many things that were making him feel a longing for an older woman. Dorothy, (the older woman) was a newlywed, her husband was called off to war and Herman did everything he could to befriend her in a clumsy yet sweet way. The climax of the movie pulls at my heartstrings every time... The Music from "The Picasso Suite" paints a picture of this climatic ending. Any young man would give up one wish to experience what Herman experienced even if the outcome at the end of the movie would break any one's heart. For me, "Sue" was the first girl who broke my heart. I reflect back on that memory with fondness, because she taught me how to French Kiss.... In a way that was just one of many "Dorothy" moments I had In my own coming of age time. I will always hold a place in my heart for the Summer of 42 Theme and the Movie. Finally got it on Blu-ray.
