Only adapter that works in my 2008 Civic Hybrid

Although the owner's manual for my 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid says that SD cards are okay, I tried the SD card adapter (Sandisk 6-in-1) with both Ultra II and regular SD cards, but I got a "Media Error" every time. I changed the formats from MP3 to WMA and back again, made sure that WMA did not have a variable bit rate, and even made sure that no songs played at more than 192kbs. Nothing worked.

Then I got this adapter and a 1 GB Sandisk CF card (regular type), popped it into the slot, and it started playing. Sounds fantastic. Better than radio or the CD player. Convenient but slow

I bought this device to offload photos from a CompactFlash (CF) card to my laptop. The alternative is a USB device which would read different card types but would have to be carried separately. The SanDisk CompactFlash PC Card Adapter does the job conveniently by fitting into the laptops PC (strictly PCMCIA) slot and becoming a part of the computer, always available for instant access. If you are sure that you will mostly only use CF cards this is a good way to go. Other similar devices exist but most DO NOT read BOTH CF and other common card types. If your camera uses SD cards, flexible options exist.

I give this product only 3 stars because of 2 obvious flaws. The CF card cannot be ejected without ejecting the entire reader card. This is a design flaw, but probably of minor inconvenience. Secondly, the transfer rate is slow, which is odd for a device that fits into a PCMCIA slot. I timed it at 6-7 seconds per approximately 5.5 MB RAW file, significantly slower than an external USB 2.0 card reader. This is not a big issue for transferring a few photos but for a full 2 GB or higher card, you can do the math.

The SanDisk SDAD-38-A10 CF to PC Card Adapter is very nice, works perfectly for playing my compact flash cards in my new Honda Civic SI. Really works great, not cheap at all, feels substantial. Easy to remove memory. I did purchase this unit just for playing compact flash cards in my New Honda Civic SI. I also purchase some 2 gig compact flash cards and they also work just fine in the car. Great Unit. Don't purchase cheaper units as I have heard they may have problems. When loading MP3s on your cards, be sure to play around with editing names of songs and also names of the folders, so you will learn what the display looks like when you do, I ended up changing things around quite a bit and kept changing them until I liked the display of the name of the band, the name of the song, etc. Kind of a pain in the beginning, but, if you hang in there it will look what you want in the display on the Honda radio. Recommend this unit, works just perfect.

Great Single Media Type Adapter!

The adapter itself was not recognized in my laptop until I inserted a Compact Flash card into it. At that point both the adapter 'and' the card and it's contents were immediately recognized. Just be aware of that so that you don't mistakenly think the adapter isn't working when you insert it into your laptop (without a CF card). All is well with this product. I give it 5 stars without reservation.

Great for music in a Honda Civic with card-slot behind nav unit

The gf has an '08 Honda Civic with a card slot beside the CD slot. I bought this SanDisk Compact Flash (CF) to PC Card adapter, and one of these CF cards:

I use a universal card reader that came with my digital camera to load mp3s onto the CF card shown in the link.

It works great. The touch screen on the car's dashboard allows us to browse folders and sub-folders. The card holds thousands of songs. We have lots of our favorite music in the dashboard of the car now.

As other reviewers, it would be nice if the adapter worked like a Flash Card SLOT, that is, you could swap cards in and out of it, instead of having to (on IBM laptop) "Stop" the driver before removing the entire adapter, take the card out, insert a different card, reinsert the adapter. But what do you expect for $10 bucks?

Otherwise it works fine, and since I have a Kangeru CD writer with a card slot, I use a 1 GB card to dump backup stuff to until I get enough to fill a CD, then stuff the card in the CD writer and go on working while it makes CDs, which actually is a lot less hassle than getting my cranky laptop CD to make CDs.

Since I have two adapter slots and a bunch of flash cards for my camera, I'm getting a second one of these adaptors, and I'll just keep my backup card & adapter together as a unit. One less swap operation.

One caution for those who've never used removable media such as a ZIP drive:

Like the ZIP drive, when you delete something from a "card Drive" (the card acts like a disk drive) IT IS HISTORY! IT DOES NOT GO TO THE RECYCLE BIN, even if you drag it from the card to the bin. So watch your "delete" operations!

works fine, but very slow

I bought two of these cards for use in laptops that did not have a CF card slot. Since my camera uses CF cards, I figured this would work well as another way to backup my files. While it does work, the speed is not so great with large files. Backing up even half a gig of RAW files from my camera can take about 5 times as long than using the camera itself.

So, I rarely use this anymore. It's handy if I have to get just one or two photos off a card, but for full backups, I use Sandisk's USB CF reader. I can't speak for the multi-card readers they make, but the old CF reader is the way to go if you're looking for the best performance.
