I am powerfully moved by almost anything Krishna Das does, with his extraordinary rich voice and intensity of delivery. But I have to say, I think this is his finest album of all. I like Kirtans, but they can border on the repetitive--one has to get into the trance-like quality of the repetitions. That is their essence. But this album represents Krishna Das' departure from the Kirtan tradition to sing slow, deeply moving devotional meditational chants. The backup is the best of on any album of his. This album stirs me more deeply and emotionally than any other. Yes, the use of English, and sung in a more bluesy style in the final song on the album initially took me aback; it seemed out of keeping with the rest of the album. But with many hearings I have come to cherish the piece-- "I have found a way to live in the presence of the Lord." It is a devotional hymn that one can carry around in one's head and one's head as a meaningful mantra.
If you are deeply into the Kirtan tradition then this album may disappoint you with its slow sinuous devotion meditational quality. But it represents in my view the deepest and most profound moments of this remarkable devotional singer.
And --if you are interested in trying something purely Indian in the classical tradition, with extraordinary voices, then try the Gundecha Brothers. This is going back to the source of much of where Krishna Das draws his inspiration.
