Among the great quirky comedies of the 1970s

This movie has been difficult to find. It is not available for rent or on Netflix. I actually searched for it for years, and it only recently became available on Amazon. I saw it as a kid and I was pleased that the comedy still holds up after all these years.

This very early Ron Liebman/George Segal vehicle features Ruth Gordon in a brilliant role as their mother. The tension between Liebman and Segal as brothers feuding over their declining mother's health care provides for some very dark, but hysterical, moments.

Gordon, in her inimitable style, meddles in Segal's love life in an effort to alienate any love interests and to keep Segal to herself. Liebman, as the son who can do no wrong, lives across town but contributes significantly less than Segal to their mother's care.

If you watch carefully, there is a scene on a New York City subway in which Sylvester Stallone makes his first (very brief) on-screen appearance. He plays a street criminal who disappears very quickly.

An almost-lost classic -- you cannot go wrong with this film!

We got this movie because I thought it would be fun to see given what I've been going through in my own family. I never saw the film when it first came out, but I did read the book and I remember laughing out loud at some of the scenes in the book. There are long stretches of the movies that are just not funny; the timing is just off.

The main character is a trial lawyer and there are a series of vignettes in the book. Short stand alone courtroom scenes which build to absurd funny climaxes. There are only two in the movie. The first is moderately funny, the second cuts away from the comedy in the middle to go out side the courtroom for a kind of romantic scene between the male and female leads. There are no others. There are a few other crude and funny scenes, but there is no real build up to those scenes so in the end the movie fails.

I give it three starts because there are a couple of funny scenes and the rest isn't overly long. However, the book is hilarious, unfortunately it is out of print and if you want to buy a copy it costs a fortune.

Satire must Offend. NOT for kids or Blue Noses, please.

I love it but admit that it is so full of offensive jokes that some people, especially Blue Noses, will gag. I praise the highest level of Satire, but want to warn your Mom that it might make her fall off her chair. Also, the slowness of the plot might put some people to sleep. WAKE UP! You are about to have your dearest beliefs questions.

This film, along with Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles are comedy classics! Neither of them can be remade in this time of political correctness, but should be seen by all who love comedy! Ruth Gordon and George Segal make a awesome comedy foil for each other! I highly recommend it for those people that love laugh out loud comedy, but have not gotten the chance to see it. I waited along time for this film on DVD and finally it happened!! Thank you very much!!

Not as funny as 1970, somewhat dated. But Gordon does a tour de force job and it's fun to see the old hands as neophytes. Uneven and ending something of a let down. But when the camera is on Ruth Gordon, it's all magic.

A truly dark comedy, that like the politically incorrect Blazing Saddles, could never be made today. But what a riot!

I am old enough to have seen this in the theater when it first came out. I have never been the same; it has had a huge effect on my life. After years of intense psychoanalysis, all I could come up with as an explanation was this: during my viewing of this film, all of my comedic neurons were firing so frequently, and so powerfully, that my brain simply could not handle the sensory overload of hilarity which had transpired. I could barely get up out of my seat and leave the theater. For weeks afterward, I could not focus on anything. I found myself weakened, enervated, depressed. My immune system had become compromised, and I caught frequent chest colds and coughs. I lost my job, and eventually, my family and friends. I converted to Judaism, and became a recluse. I took to wearing strange disguises and weird costumes in an attempt to blur my identity. For many years I spent my evenings and weekends in a vain attempt to locate a film as funny as Where's Poppa? Despite literally thousands of hours in screening rooms, film societies, obscure movie theaters and festivals, and after journeying through all the stages of home film technology, from Super 8 to VHS to laser disk to DVD, I have given up. No one will ever make a funnier movie than this.

It's so funny I almost wish I'd never seen it, oy, the troubles it's caused!

You know that horror movie Ringu, remade in US as The Ring? They watched a tape and then died. Same idea with that one in the Halloween series--was it 4??--where if you watched the pumpkin your head would explode? That's what this movie is like. Don't be surprised if your head, or maybe your chest, explodes or bursts into flames from the sheer, unadulterated, unmitigated hilarity.
