After Boggy Depot, Alice in Chains briefly got back together to record a couple songs and release a compilation set, but once again fell apart right after: so Jerry stepped back up to the plate and made it on his own. This double album is the way Jerry wished it to be released from the start: the earlier single disc set was a compromise with the record company nervous about a project of this size. Now that we have the full package, Degradation Trip vol. 1&2 is different than his Debut, but is no less strong.

Other reviews do the `song-by-song' approach so I'll just give my thoughts on the set and point out some of the standouts in my opinion. This set is less experimental than Boggy Depot, and focuses more on Cantrell's signature heavy, sludgy riffing balanced with some gorgeous acoustic numbers. The album is quite a bit heavier than Boggy Depot, with songs like "Spiderbite", "Hellbound", "Anger Rising" and "She Was My Girl" rivaling Soundgarden's Batmotorfinger in terms of raw, heavy, in your face metal. Though in true Cantrell style we get gorgeous acoustic songs like "Gone", "31/32" and "Give it a Name" to balance the experience, and songs like "Siddhartha", "Feel the Void" and "What it Takes" recall the creepy, skin crawling style of AiC hits like "Died" and "Get Born Again".

Jerry mostly sings at a much lower pitch than he did on his previous solo effort, matching the darker, dirtier sound of the album, though he rises up on the acoustic numbers to keep those songs refreshing breaks from all the darkness. As far as other things, I do feel the greater prominence of the Bass over Boggy Depot is important since many of the songs are slow and sludgy, and nothing is as dank and sludgy as a well-played bass line.

Overall Cantrell's second solo effort is a different sort of flavor from his debut, but it's still amazing and shows off how strong he is on his own. I honestly feel than Jerry Cantrell is just as strong on his own as he is with Alice in Chains, and I wish his solo efforts got greater recognition.

I have never listened to the single-album version of this release, but I went to see Jerry Cantrell live when he was touring to support Degradation Trip and was absolutely stunned when I did. It was an awakening - realizing that Cantrell was the backbone of Alice in Chains and that the soul of the band continued on... Every song in this double-album is so amazing, I have no idea why they would have held anything behind in the first place, except that the label didn't want to release so many songs in the first place. Don't know.

From the opener, Psychotic Break, a sludgy, downward trip into despair - "I feel the fear take hold...", through 31/32, with glimpses of hope, you're going through the emotional journey of one Jerry Cantrell, who, for years later, wasn't even able to revisit these songs (he has recently). Feel the journey through the songs and you will see why.

If you're an audiophile, buy it on vinyl while you can, though I had the CD version for years before I picked it up on vinyl... Either is a great choice. Just buy the darned thing and dread the ear candy.

I originally bought this album at a local Walmart for $26.99. I hated spending the money, but soon realized I had a bargain. Admittedly, after "Boggy Depot" I was expecting more of the same. I realized about 10 seconds in that Jerry had a completely different mood on this album. To me, there are very few weak spots on the album. There is a stretch on disc 2 where I nearly wore my first disc out. "Chemical tribe", "What it takes", "Dying "Sidhartha"... just brilliant work. Very rarely does this album or its songs seem as absolutely lengthy as they are. Jerry laid his heart and soul out there on everything from being unfaithful, addicted to drugs, being a rock star to being alone and feeling that emptiness. He essentially attacks himself in much the same way he did on "Dirt", but this time it's in his own voice. This is in my top 5 albums of all time, and likely always will be. This album got me through some very dark times, and let me know I was not alone in the abyss. Sonically, this album sounds to me like "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here" a decade early. If you're looking for uplifting, happy, tree-hugging music, don't bother looking here. If you want heavy, self-deprecating, blistering, honest and ABSOLUTELY F###ING BRILLIANT, then buy this, wear it out, and buy another one, like I did.

Great album, you will enjoy it if you are a fan of Alice in Chains or Jerry Cantrell!

Oh man! I can't express the affect this album has on my soul. I was a big fan of Boggy Depot and had meant to check this out for a long time after that came out but for whatever reason I hadn't gotten around to it. What a mistake! This album is great!

It runs the gamut from slow, soft ballads to deep, heavy, distorted rock tracks. I love it! A lot of the songs are very catchy and stick with you. But the real hook is the emotion that flows from the songs. It seems that Jerry really poured his soul into many of the tracks. A couple of songs speak to the despair one feels as he observes a tragic situation that he is powerless to stop or prevent. This has obvious significance in Jerry's life, but will reasonate with anyone that has found themselves in a similar situation.

It speaks to me and will to you too. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cantrell at his best
Reviewed in France on December 11, 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottima ristampa
Reviewed in Italy on October 23, 2020

    5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on November 19, 2018

    Alice In Chains
