Now here's something you don't see everyday, Chauncey. It's the complete first season of one of television's smartest, savviest, and most subversively funny animated series, ranked by TV Guide as one of the top 50 series of all time. Like the animators at Warner Bros.' Termite Terrace (birthplace of Porky, Daffy, and Bugs), producer Jay Ward, his partner Bill Scott (the voice of Bullwinkle), and the cracked writing staff did not write down to children. The dialogue is witty and sharply satiric. Characters break the "fourth wall" between the screen and the audience. They make sly references to the show's creators and the television network. They hurl barbs of mass destruction at Washington, D.C. politicians. And then there are the godawful puns. This four-disc set contains the series' first two serial adventures. "Jet Fuel Formula" is a cold war-era blast, as Rocky (voiced by June Foray, the Queen of Cartoons) and Bullwinkle frantically race to re-create a rocket fuel recipe (actually Grandma Bullwinkle's recipe for mooseberry fudge cake), while being menaced by those no-goodniks Boris Badenov and femme fatale Natasha. "Box Top Robbery" reveals that the basis for the world's economy is not gold and silver, but cereal box tops.
Linking these cliffhanging episodes are such hilarious segments as "Fractured Fairy Tales," which upend familiar storybook favorites (Red Riding Hood, for example, is a predatory fur merchant after the unwitting wolf), "Mr. Peabody," the canine genius who travels through time in the company of his boy, Sherman, and forthright Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, who must contend with his own horse for the affections of sweet Nell. Bullwinkle gets extra credits as Mr. Know-It-All and as the host of Poetry Corner. And watch him pull a rabbit out of his hat! These cartoons are as fresh and funny as when they first aired more than four decades ago. Boomer-era adults will be amazed at the jokes that no doubt soared over their heads as children. --Donald Liebenson

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2013If you are looking for as little reminder of those saturday mornings filled with cartoons, when as kids in the 50's we got control of the only TV in the house, well until about 10AM when we were thrown out of the house for the day, they used to call that going outside and play :)
Besides the full season of episode cliff hangers there are the "and Friends", Improbable History with Mr. Peabody and his Boy Sherman, my personal favorite Fractured Fairy Tales, Aesop & Son, these break up the episodes of Rocky just as they used to, the only thing missing are the commercials for pure sugar breakfast cerial. (Illegal in all 50 states now :)
I have this DVD in a second player and a number of other Sat morning cartoons and like to start a movie off with with a cartoon like the Drive-In, the kids love it but surprizingly so far nearly everyone we have done it with (adults) like the added touch to a home theater movie, add some Sugar Pops and Coco-Puffs
Rocky and Bullwinkle have two shows built into one, the political barbs and commentary in off-handed remarks is amazing all buried in there for the adults watching, the more you know the history of that era the more fun these are, and if not Rocky and Bullwinkle stand on their own at face value just fine.
The good and the bad, on the great side is picture quality, they look great the video is fantastic, the audio is great also but it is modified from the original at times due to the original being to degraded to restore, frankly I had no idea, seemed like the original to me but I am not a pro on Sat morning cartoons from the 50's and the music is not different enough for the average bear to notice...
All and all a great value, lots of fun.
BTW -- If you are a prime member you can watch this on-line for free, I did that first.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2003Hello. If you're anything like me then you are a balding jewish guy in his late 40's. You might also be a purist when it comes to collecting your baby-boomer tv memories. If that is the case then you might want to be aware of a few tiny short comings in this Rocky the Flying Squirrel box set. The titles of the show's opening have been altered slightly and someone other than William Conrad's voice is used for a few seconds. Also the beginning of each cartoon has a little "R&B" logo on screen for a few seconds, which I find annoying! in addition you can see copywrite dates on the titles that are from 1989. oooh I hate that! when I watch my vintage TV i want it authentic! I got some rocky VHS tapes a few years ago from [local store]. I recommend seeking those out. Other than thoses tiny complaints, this is good stuff.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2003I won't speak for the content, if you like Moose & Squirrel, you'll want this set. But you (and the makers) should know the Pros and Cons of the set, to whit:
PROS:
* Remastered sound and video - there are still imperfections in the video, but the color is more vivid than I've seen on TV broadcasts
* Two complete stories: Rocket Fuel Formula and Box Top Conspiracy
* Play All - Watch all episodes on each of the four discs in succession
* Entire episodes shown - including all periphral cartoons (Dudley Do-Right, Peabody, Aesop & Son, and Fractured Fairy Tales) as well as commercial lead-ins
* Nice packaging - when the first thing you see on opening a DVD set is a moose saying, "Hello Low IQers!", you know the makers respect the Jay Ward tradition!
CONS:
* Altered Title - The title sequence is altered in the middle to change it from the original to "Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends", with an obvious switch in voice and animation quality. The alteration is cheap and unnecessary
* Season Two Intro - The documentation says that the intro to each episode was the one used in the second season, which was Jay Ward's favorite. If this were a collection, that would be a good decision, but as a "season one", it should have the season one intro. This makes me think there may not be a season two set in which to display Ward's favorite intro, which would be sad indeed. All I know is I sure would have preferred to see Season One EXACTLY as it was originally presented.
* Dubious accuracy - All the tampering (season 2 intro) has achieved is to ensure that the Rocky And Bullwinle show will never be accurately reproduced.
BOTTOM LINE:
* The only way to enjoy watching Rocky Bullwinkle is to see the episodes in proper sequence
* This DVD set provides the first two stories in their entirety that comprised the first season
* Each of the four discs provides almost 3 hours of uninterrupted Jay Ward & Friends brand hilarity, what more could you want? After all, you searched for "bullwinkle", didn't you?
* You read this far? Buy it already!
