As the 2005 theatrical release of Serenity made clear, Firefly was a science fiction concept that deserved a second chance. Devoted fans (or "Browncoats") knew it all along, and with this well-packaged DVD set, those who missed the show's original broadcasts can see what they missed. Creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only 11 of these 14 episodes had aired on the Fox network, but history has proven that its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid got off to a shaky start when network executives demanded an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job"); in hindsight the intended two-hour pilot (also titled "Serenity," and oddly enough, the final episode aired) provides a better introduction to the show's concept and splendid ensemble cast. Obsessive fans can debate the quirky logic of combining spaceships with direct parallels to frontier America (it's 500 years in the future, and embattled humankind has expanded into the galaxy, where undeveloped "outer rim" planets struggle with the equivalent of Old West accommodations), but Whedon and his gifted co-writers and directors make it work, at least well enough to fashion a credible context from the incongruous culture-clashing of past, present, and future technologies, along with a polyglot language (the result of two dominant superpowers) that combines English with an abundance of Chinese slang.
What makes it work is Whedon's delightfully well-chosen cast and their nine well-developed characters--a typically Whedon-esque extended family--each providing a unique perspective on their adventures aboard Serenity, the junky but beloved "Firefly-class" starship they call home. As a veteran of the disadvantaged Independent faction's war against the all-powerful planetary Alliance (think of it as Underdogs vs. Overlords), Serenity captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads his compact crew on a quest for survival. They're renegades with an amoral agenda, taking any job that pays well, but Firefly's complex tapestry of right and wrong (and peace vs. violence) is richer and deeper than it first appears. Tantalizing clues about Blue Sun (an insidious mega-corporation with a mysteriously evil agenda), its ties to the Alliance, and the traumatizing use of Serenity's resident stowaway (Summer Glau) as a guinea pig in the development of advanced warfare were clear indications Firefly was heading for exciting revelations that were precluded by the series' cancellation. Fortunately, the big-screen Serenity (which can be enjoyed independently of the series) ensured that Whedon's wild extraterrestrial west had not seen its final sunset. Its very existence confirms that these 14 episodes (and enjoyable bonus features) will endure as irrefutable proof Fox made a glaring mistake in canceling the series. --Jeff Shannon

- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2015Firefly is an excellent show and one the very best to appear on TV. The theme and baseline story is brilliant and leaves an amazing diverse foundation to build upon. What other show can build a plot and story line from the wild west to modern futuristic communities and planets with such ease and transition while holding a solid theme in check. How intelligent or imaginative would one have to be to see the unlimited canvas this show presents? I found the stories and characters a considerable notch above most Sci-Fi entertainment and in fact I thought it should have received awards instead of being cancelled! The actors and actresses were outstanding in their roles and cast extremely well. A blend of engaging look forward to the next stories where comedy and fun brilliantly and successfully mixed with solid action and excitement to keep any Sci-Fi enthusiast very satisfied.
Having watched the show I now think less of Fox Network Group and especially Gail Berman who according to reports cancelled the show. Slotted on Friday nights at 9:00 pm is an idiot decision by Gail Berman and Fox. This clearly demonstrates a lack of vision, judgement and reason in failing to see a gem of a show. Ensuing comments from Berman demonstrate an idiot viewpoint leaning on skewed numbers that were pulled from an unrealistic data gathering that completely failed to calculate the consequential metrics that frankly anyone could see. The fact that of the metrics being so glaringly obvious in detriment to the show made Berman's comments an insight into her and Fox Network Groups mindset. Simply put they failed to utilize a brilliant show, story line and cast, while shoving an idiots excuse at the public. Why point that out? ....because a "Great Sci-Fi Series" was lost to the many due to the limited vision and decision skill of the few (Berman and Fox). Berman rode the success of American Idol, leaving or fired in 2005, and she returns back to Fox with the Jackal Group in 2014. Who names their organization the Jackal Group?...here's one definition of Jackal that may provide insight..." a person who performs dishonest or base deeds as the follower or accomplice of another".
A few statistics gathered about Firefly are; Premiered in the U.S. on the Fox network on September 20, 2002. By mid-December, Firefly had averaged 4.7 million viewers per episode and was 98th in Nielsen ratings. It was canceled after eleven of the fourteen produced episodes were aired. Despite the relatively short life span of the series, it received strong sales when it was released on DVD and has large fan support campaigns. It won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2003 for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series. TV Guide ranked the series at No. 5 on their 2013 list of 60 shows that were "Cancelled Too Soon". It also won two Saturn Awards in 2003 and 2004 for the Cinescape Genre Face of the Future Award, male and for the Best DVD Release. Finally, it won five SyFy Genre Awards in 2006, for the Best Series / Television, the Best Actor/Television Nathan Fillion, the Best Supporting Actor/Television Adam Baldwin, the Best Special Guest / Television Christina Hendricks for “Trash”, and the Best Episode / Television “Trash”. In addition to the statistics it's worth mentioning that I've experienced viewers who would not normally choose Sci-Fi based stories be fully entertained with the interwoven drama, sub-plots, comedic interjections, and believable well done characters and acting that each episode could deliver.
Gail Force Nine, one of the finest quality game makers currently producing games, counts Firefly in its ranks with Spartacus and Sons of Anarchy. One can see the success of the aforementioned shows but it seems the Sci-Fi public has lost out on the Firefly continued story. Here's one of many fans that would like to see someone pick up Firefly and renew the stories, cast and show doing it justice with a renewed series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2009I've been hearing off and on over the years that Firefly is one of the best scifi shows ever. I'm always skeptical of the words "the best" but I figured I'll one day give it a shot. I saw Firefly on sale on Amazon for 20 bucks and decided I had nothing to lose, except for 20 some odd bucks for s&h. I hurt myself for not getting this show sooner.
Firefly consist of fourteen episodes, three of which were never aired on television. It's about Mal, and his crew of eight who takes on odd jobs. Each crew member is unique, however, and the show focuses on all nine characters at some point and time.
Here are the fourteen episodes that you get to see, and my thoughts on them:
Serenity Pilot - from my understanding, this was supposed to be the "pilot" episode of the series, but instead Tran Job got the pilot due to some management issues. Serenity is not to be confused with the movie, though. This is the only two hours episode you get in the whole Firefly series.
The Train Job - the actual pilot that was shown to people back when the show was on television. The episode features some interesting things about Simon and River, two of the interesting characters in the series.
Bushwhacked - I believe this is the first time you hear about Reavers which are really space pirates with a twist - they're insane, psychotic people who do some weird stuff to the people they capture.
Shindig - a pretty funny episode. I think this episode really shows off the "western" feel of the series because it features swordplay and so fort which is interesting to watch.
Safe - good episode depending on how you look at it. River and Simon got kidnapped by villagers and near the end, the village declares River as a witch and wants to burn her.
Our Mrs Reynolds - features Saffron who is Mal's nemesis in a later episode. Mal gets married, which the crew find funny, but the woman isn't exactly who she say she is. Features a fairly funny moment with Jayne and him trying to trade his favorite weapon for a wife, which he thinks is a fair and honest trade.
Jaynestown - there is a character named Jayne who is the crew's muscle. He's tough as nails, but he isn't exactly the brightest. Jayne comes to planet only to find that they think of him like some sort of urban legend. This episode I think highlights the series focus on multiple characters, and how detailed the creator makes each of them.
Out Of Gas - Definitely want to watch this sometime after seeing Serenity. This episode features some interesting back stories to how Mal got his crew together.
Ariel - another interesting Simon and River episode in that the crew attempts to "cure" River and her illness.
War Stories - this is one of my favorites. To understand this episode fully, you'd probably want to watch Train Job first. Although the ending of this episode got sort of rushed, I think it went pretty well for the 43 minutes.
Trash - You'd want to watch Our Mrs Reynolds first before watching this. I watched this episode before Our Mrs Reynolds and was a bit confused at first. However, you'll find this episode funnier if you watch the said episode first.
The Message - this is a strange episode. It's hated by many fans of the show because of its semi-weak story, however, interestingly it also explains a bit of back story between Mal and Zoe when they fought in a war for Independence, the losing side.
Heart Of Gold - throughout the series Mal and Inara have a sort of love-hate relationship. This episode sort of features a pretty cool link between the two.
Objects In Space - the last of the episodes, but interesting in that it again features Simon and River as the main story.
Those are all the episodes. That's it. It doesn't sound like much, but believe me, after watching all 14 episodes, you will probably fall in love with this show and probably want more. The first thought that came to mind was, "How did they decide to cancel this awesome show?" It's quite amazing and I'm quite baffled at how someone at a tv network could just drop this show. After watching this, you'll no doubt want more. Well you don't have to worry. You'll find that there is a movie titled Serenity which is just as awesome as the show. On top of that there are comic books that explains the story before the movie Serenity.
Overall, the series is much loved by many people. I think any scifi fan should have Firefly in his or her collection. The show is simply awesome. There are many devoted fan sites as well, and the funny thing is that many fans are willing to donate cash so that they can create more episodes. The funnier thing is that I would be willing to pay into this fund if it means that there will be more episodes, that's how seriously you will become a fan if you see this show.

Amazon CustomerReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Its been billed as the greatest SciFi ever made
Caught this Just a few weeks ago on the Sci Fi Channel over the Easter Bank Holiday, Missed it first time around - its been in a few times but I've never paid it much attention.
I did have other plans, and only casually tuned in on Saturday morning to discover they were running a marathon session in one day. Lets just say that the other plans got slightly delayed as I became drawn in to watching episode after episode... Ended up recording the last half of the show and watching it the day after, then wanted to watch it all over again.
Its been billed as the greatest SciFi ever made, at first i thought that's a mighty claim to live up to, but at the end of the season, it definitely lived up to its reputation.
For the love of me, I cannot understand why it was cancelled. Coming off the back of Buffy (Josh Whedons prior creation), perhaps it may not have appealed to the Buffy crowd. It's basically a SciFi Western, which couldn't be any more different to Buffy. The setting actually works very well. It doesn't overly rely on special effects (which by the way are not too bad for the early 2000's), there's a lot more emphasis on story and character development.
There's a lot going on in the first season, you get the feeling this really could have gone far as the plots and character developments were shaping up well. Each character was interesting in their own right, and there were limitless possibilities as to where this could have gone, given the chance. Perhaps it was just too ahead of its time, its ideal for today's "binge watch" era, i'd imagine it really would have taken off if created today.
The Blu ray is not too bad, its a bit grainy at certain scenes, thats probably to do with the original filming, but it is shot in widescreen, The locations and scenery for the outdoor shoots are good, there is a certain charm in the "broken future" western setting.
Basic staring plot is that 500 years in the future, Earth and its resources have been used up, forcing humanity to colonise another system . Society has separated into the richer more technological advance inner planet of the Alliance, and the more poorer rural "outer Planet's" that have been colonised. Akin to the wild West Frontier. The show is set after the great war, which the "Alliance" fought and won against the "Independants" to bring all the inner Planets in-line. The crew of the Firely (some of whom fought for the Independents) operate on the fringes.
As i said, its been on numerous times and i never really gave it time of day. Give it a shot, you wont be disappointed, and by the end of the show, you'll begin to understand why its billed as the greatest SciFi show ever made. There's been so much talk on whether this show will/will not ever come back, but trust me, enjoy it for what it is. You'll recognise many of the cast who have gone on to other things on various TV shows so its interesting to see their earlier work.
With its ever growing fan base, even if it (by miracle) were to be rebooted, it wont be the same.
Brando777Reviewed in Canada on November 1, 20115.0 out of 5 stars Excellent series!!
My roomate first introduced me to Firefly, and I have become a commited browncoat ever since!
This is an excellent series that died long before it's time. In contrast to so many shows in the sci-fi genre, Firefly incorperates both the ancient past and the distant future-- space travel and cowboys, a winning combination. Recounting the voyages/adventures of the Firefly class ship(Serenity) captained by Malcom Renyolds and a crew from several walks of life, the show sets a more realistic conception(at least in my opinion) as to what life would be like for mankind if they were to leave this rock and explore/settle various planets in the galexy. One thing I love about this series is the fact that there are no far fetched stories of alien beings or other species(unless if you count people turned savage, cannibalistic and sadistic- aka Reavers). Laying aside the many cliches so prevalent in the science fiction world, Joss Wheaton created a truly unique work about real people struggling to make a living on the far reaches of space, far from the many luxuries that civalization has to offer. I could delve deeper into the plotline, conflicts, personality clashes and character profiles that make Firefly a truly worthy addition to one's video collection(or at least one worth checking out) but as I am confident that this info is readily available to the common man, let it be sufficiant to say that as a fan of the sci-fi genre and one who appreciates cleaver writing(unlike much of the drivel being passed of as entertainment today), I would highly reccomend the series. Let me add that I am quite perplexed and somewhat saddened by the fact that Fox discontinued such a rare gem. If only a diffrent station was interested in picking it up we may have gained the answers to a number of questions and seen the resolution to several loose ends... Still, as stated in the commentary- "You can't take the sky from me". Perhaps someday They may have the chances and resources to continue the series(wishful thinking on my part)!

ParsecReviewed in Germany on September 16, 20255.0 out of 5 stars You can't take the sky from me
