just as good as I remembered it

Growing up I remember watching this on tv at Christmas, but then sadly it somehow vanished. And I missed the odd stop-motion slightly "Picasso" look and when I would mention it to my friends or boyfriend they'd never seen it, so of course I had to find it and buy it on here! It was just as good and just as odd as I remembered. lol And I was very happy to see that it had both the UK voice actors & the American ones that you can switch between. It was sort of funny because I remembered the UK voices from my childhood and when the movie started I was caught off guard by hearing the American ones, but then my boyfriend surprised me the next day by pointing out that I could change it back and forth. lol This movie and the sequel will be watched in all of it's odd glory year after year in our house - whether it's Christmas time or not.

Terrible re-release!

Oh, this is terrible. The original Brit/Aussie "voice talents" really seemed to synch with the off-kilter personalities of Santa and his sleigh team. Now those voices have been redone using American actors who just don't hit the mark remotely as well, and the added "Lost Tribe" episode does little to compensate. Maybe I'm just used to the original, but this redo just won't do. It's heading to Goodwill (may their buyers beware) as I seek a gently used copy of the original release.

Great addition to holiday movie collection

I remember watching this as a kid on TV and loving it, so when I saw it for $4 on Amazon I had to get it. Like with anything, it wasn't as funny as I remember but I still really enjoyed watching it. I know people complain about the english voice dubbing, but that is the only way I had ever watched it so it didn't bother me any! As others have said, you can switch to the original voices if you wish to do so. I think you should buy this. It is a great addition to our holiday movie collection.

"Power, one of the few things nicer than toast"

Okay, so these aren't as great as the Wallace and Gromit films, but they are pretty funny. We actually like "The Lost Tribe" better than "Hooves"; it is wackier and has more action - and Vikings! Blitzen's evil is delightful; his comparison of power and toast just cracked me up! There's more than a hint of Monty Python about "Lost Tribe" (the Viking flashback sequences are a key example).
We found the US voice versions really flat and always listen to the UK versions; I think that the US version was done so that American audiences would have voices that they recognized, but Jane Horrocks' voice beats Britney Spears' voice hands down!
One note - neither of the stories is actually about Christmas, but they ARE about reindeer and the North Pole. Our two year old loves the films, and we like them quite well, but what you think of them will depend on what you were expecting.

Different voice cast

I love the original Hooves of Fire...With the original voice cast. Both episodes in this version are overdubed by another cast of mostly American actors. Really disapointed when I sat to watch it. Ugh. The original voices were so good

You could feel the chemistry between the cast members while listening to the voice overs.

The set comes with two stories and four voice tracks each, a British English version and an American English version. Both sets had a great, famous ensemble cast.

Both stories are enduring stories that point to expectations, failure, and redemption. While the stories involve North Pole themes and Christmas creatures from popular culture, these are not Christmas stories per se, i.e., if you want your kids to understand what Christmas is all about, you need to crack open that family heirloom and read Luke chapter 2 - it is still a riveting read nearly 2,000 years later. ;-)

very funny stuff, better in British.

These two short films are a bit thin on plot perhaps, but they are well worth watching just for the sight gags and throw-away lines. The grown-ups in our house enjoyed them as much as the kids did.

Now, this is important: don't just put it in and hit "play," or you will get the re-dubbed U.S. version. The American voices are not nearly as funny as the original British/Irish ones. Work your way through the options menu and choose "U.K. voices."

All in all, Robbie is not quite up to Wallace and Gromit standards, but it's close. This DVD is a nice holiday complement to Charlie Brown and the Grinch.

Enjoyable way to spend time but nothing outstanding

I certainly enjoyed my time watching Robbie, but I wouldn't go so far as to recommend it to anyone but animation buffs. I listened to it with the British soundtrack (an option you can select on the American disc), and I enjoyed the humor and the storyline, but there was very little that made me laugh out loud or that I thought about even an hour later.

The humor was crass at times and definitely not suitable for children. I think the crassness of the humor made it less funny, like they were trading cleverness for crassness and hoping we wouldn't notice the difference.

I'd love to see more from the animators, because this was a near miss. A little bit more time spent writing good dialogue or a funny plot would have gone a long way towards making this a five star show.

Until then, try Wallace and Gromit or Creature Comforts - both are cleverly hilarious and have truly fantastic claymation.
