I just used this for the first time at a couple of weddngs with my Einstein 640. Beautiful even light, it even lit up a group shot of 20 people. The only drawback is it will not tilt down with the Einstein, so if you're shooting children or need to raise the stand up high over your head it won't tilt down towards your subject. I just have my assistant tilt the stand down for those shots. Very easy to set up and tear down in the quick setting of location weddings. I love it so much I'm going to buy the 24" version to take on engagement shoots! Check out photos taken with this at www.roephotography.com

I don't really recommend this soft box, the diffusor is saggy and cheap looking, much worse than on my ePhoto 24x36 softboxes (I just wish they made a larger size) and the worst part is the umbrella snaps closed all the time. The design of the shaft doesn't let my umbrella holder on far enough since it tapers thicker, so my flash is sitting right by the diffusor and the hole in the bottom of this umbrella to pass the light through is putting pressure on the stand if you angle the umbrella down at all, and this pressure is enough to force the umbrella to close. Doing an all day portrait shoot and I imagine I had to re-open the umbrella 20 times.

it's an umbrella w/ a silver interior that costs $100+...
    Pro:
    1) does what you expect it to and fairly well

    Con:
    1) tough for adjusting the speedlite, b/c you need to pull open the screen, which requires both hands, each time--can't do it if you are holding onto a camera...
    2) most of the umbrella's structure appear to be plastic or questionable-quality metal
    3) the bag/case that comes with it is useless, because it's too narrow/tight towards the tip, so it's impossible to get the actual umbrella folded and back into it
    4) i don't recommend this for someone who needs to pack/unpack this regularly

Amazing results. Big enough to light a large group, versatile enough to use for infant sessions. I use mine with my Paul C. Buff Einsteins and the PCB angle arm so I can get some down angle on it. Putting it on a lightstand will only allow you to face it straight forward or up, not down. You can also use a boom but I'd recommend a c-stand with lots of weight on the base as this would be very top heavy.

    Great modifier!

There is considerable sag in the front diffusion panel that degrades the quality of light in various ways depending on the angle. After several months Westcott finally responded with "the umbrella frame cannot properly support the softbox at any downward angle" which I find ironic since they sell products designed specifically to make tilting this down easier and the symmetrical frame should require more strength holding it upright. Even straight on the sag allows wrinkles in the diffusion cloth that create anomalies in the light (highlights and shadows) and when used overhead for product or food work the sag creates more of a shoot through umbrella look (though more controlled due to the closed box behind). I've spent countless hours trying to remount and adjust the diffuser to no avail and with westcott finally replying (well after my return window has closed) I'm stuck with a very low quality softbox for a much higher price than many alternatives that can be found here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Qualitätslicht - mit zum Teil dürftiger Verarbeitung
Reviewed in Germany on April 11, 2015

Reviewed in Spain on March 7, 2014

4.0 out of 5 stars Great soft box but make sure you have enough space for it!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2016
Before buying this one I had used Westcott’s 26” Rapid Box as well as their Rapid Box Duo. As much as I love Westcott’s Rapid Box Range I have to say that to me this Mega JS Apollo turn out to be a small disappointment. Not because it wasn’t good but because I heavily underestimated how big & cumbersome it was to use in practise. If you were planning to use this for indoors portraits (standing in particular) then you must ensure you have very high ceilings (3 metres minimum) to even be able to lift the soft box at decent height.

For that reason I would strongly recommend everyone grabbing a measuring tape before clicking that buy button. Definitely check out how low the bottom corners of the soft box will come if you were to lift the soft box to touch the ceiling of your studio. If your studio ceiling is 2,5m tall then this 130cm x 130cm soft box will occupy more than HALF of the rooms height and as you can imagine that can make it super challenging for you to shoot in that space.

From a technical perspective this 50” Mega JS Apollo soft box is basically just an oversized umbrella, so you can easily squeeze it into a small footprint. However even in it’s stored away size it’s still about 120cm tall, so it’s not something that convenient to travel with. If you happen to be a newborn photographer then this soft box might be just perfect for you since newborn photographers don’t need to set up the light so high as when doing regular portraits.

    PROS:
+ Turns a single Speedlite into massive soft box —> Great for group shots
+ Great for newborn photographers who don’t necessarily need to lift the soft box that high!
+ It’s quick to use since it works just like an umbrella
+ Can be attached to virtually any umbrella hotshoe adapters and light stands.
+ Produces very even soft window light

    CONS:
    - Requires a lot of space if you desire to get most out of using this particular soft box
    - It’s total height is still around 120cm when closed/stored away... Not that easy to travel with.
    - Since this is an umbrella it's quite delicate item; you need to be very careful not to bend any of the frames accidentally
    - It doesn’t come with carrying case any kind!
    - The hole where the light stand goes through allows very limited tilting.
    - As far as I’m aware you can’t get a grid for Mega JS Apollo
    - Little bit overpriced considering that at the end this is just an umbrella with a diffusion panel

    SUMMARY:
I would say that overall this Westcott Mega JS Apollo does what it says and it does produces good looking window light most people might be after. It is made from good quality materials but at the end it’s just a big square umbrella and nothing more. If you happen to have a big working space or studio with high ceilings you will certainly find this Westcott Mega JS Apollo useful, but for limited space it just doesn’t work. Even if you think you can manage with 127cmx127cm front surface you should still remember that this umbrella has a depth too which almost 70-80cm. So moving this big “cube” around can become very tricky if you don't have enough space to move.

Considering how much you pay for this soft box I think it should definitely come with a carrying bag, but sadly it doesn’t. Yes you get a simple plastic "bag" you could technically use for travel, but it isn’t the same as the bags you get with Westcott’s Rapid Boxes. So to me personally this wasn’t the most ideal purchase but you can definitely make it work if you have enough space & right type of rooms where you use it.
