Product Description
Large, Beautiful Lighting
The Mega Apollo softbox's large construction creates a vast, directional light output perfect for full-length portraiture, high-key backdrops, and large product photography.
For Speedlites and Strobes
Do you shoot with both types of off-camera flash? Thanks to the Apollo and Halo’s versatile umbrella shaft, these modifiers can be instantly paired with both speedlites and strobes. With these softboxes, you won’t be confined to using a single lighting style or forced into buying various modifiers.
Direct and Soften Light
By directing your light source toward the Apollo’s included diffusion front, you’ll create drastic highlights with a subtle hot spot. By directing your unit towards the back of Apollo, you’ll create an even spread of light with softer shadows. You can even pick up an optional 40-degree Egg Crate Grid for more light control options.
Instant Setup
With flexible framework and convenient umbrella-style design, these modifiers open and collapse quickly for effortless setup and storage.
Say Goodbye to Speedrings and Rods
These modifiers are constructed with an umbrella-style frame. Not only does this allow for the instant assembly, but it also allows for quick strobe mounting without bulky speedrings or adapters.
Premium Diffusion Fabric
Our diffusion panels are constructed with a premium, all-natural unbleached nylon fabric that will soften your light source without altering its color temperature.

and it is easy to set up.
Pro:
1) does what you expect it to and fairly well
Con:
1) tough for adjusting the speedlite, b/c you need to pull open the screen, which requires both hands, each time--can't do it if you are holding onto a camera...
2) most of the umbrella's structure appear to be plastic or questionable-quality metal
3) the bag/case that comes with it is useless, because it's too narrow/tight towards the tip, so it's impossible to get the actual umbrella folded and back into it
4) i don't recommend this for someone who needs to pack/unpack this regularly
Great modifier!

Love it :-)
For that reason I would strongly recommend everyone grabbing a measuring tape before clicking that buy button. Definitely check out how low the bottom corners of the soft box will come if you were to lift the soft box to touch the ceiling of your studio. If your studio ceiling is 2,5m tall then this 130cm x 130cm soft box will occupy more than HALF of the rooms height and as you can imagine that can make it super challenging for you to shoot in that space.
From a technical perspective this 50” Mega JS Apollo soft box is basically just an oversized umbrella, so you can easily squeeze it into a small footprint. However even in it’s stored away size it’s still about 120cm tall, so it’s not something that convenient to travel with. If you happen to be a newborn photographer then this soft box might be just perfect for you since newborn photographers don’t need to set up the light so high as when doing regular portraits.
PROS:
+ Turns a single Speedlite into massive soft box —> Great for group shots
+ Great for newborn photographers who don’t necessarily need to lift the soft box that high!
+ It’s quick to use since it works just like an umbrella
+ Can be attached to virtually any umbrella hotshoe adapters and light stands.
+ Produces very even soft window light
CONS:
- Requires a lot of space if you desire to get most out of using this particular soft box
- It’s total height is still around 120cm when closed/stored away... Not that easy to travel with.
- Since this is an umbrella it's quite delicate item; you need to be very careful not to bend any of the frames accidentally
- It doesn’t come with carrying case any kind!
- The hole where the light stand goes through allows very limited tilting.
- As far as I’m aware you can’t get a grid for Mega JS Apollo
- Little bit overpriced considering that at the end this is just an umbrella with a diffusion panel
SUMMARY:
I would say that overall this Westcott Mega JS Apollo does what it says and it does produces good looking window light most people might be after. It is made from good quality materials but at the end it’s just a big square umbrella and nothing more. If you happen to have a big working space or studio with high ceilings you will certainly find this Westcott Mega JS Apollo useful, but for limited space it just doesn’t work. Even if you think you can manage with 127cmx127cm front surface you should still remember that this umbrella has a depth too which almost 70-80cm. So moving this big “cube” around can become very tricky if you don't have enough space to move.
Considering how much you pay for this soft box I think it should definitely come with a carrying bag, but sadly it doesn’t. Yes you get a simple plastic "bag" you could technically use for travel, but it isn’t the same as the bags you get with Westcott’s Rapid Boxes. So to me personally this wasn’t the most ideal purchase but you can definitely make it work if you have enough space & right type of rooms where you use it.
