Being an 'old guy' that has been intimately involved with stereo systems for over 35 years, I feel qualified to state that the combination of price and quality has reached a perfect ratio with this system. First note that I am using a Creative Labs Audigy 2ZS sound card with this system. You don't have to be a 'discriminating' listener of music to appreciate the clariy, brilliance and bass drive of this system. Very well done indeed. The ONLY thing I had to do to 'extra' with this system is purchase extensions for my 2 rear speakers with inline connectors. I have surround sound capabilities in my home office now and it is truly, truly enjoyable to listen to music through my PC now. I will soon be adding an XM-Radio peripheral to my system to bring an endless source of digital music to my office. Installation was easy, just read the instructions. Included software for speaker calibration and balance was simple and enjoyable. Special effects were demonstrated on the disks and impressive. Additional software of games etc. was very much appreciated. All in all, I did VERY well by purchasing the sound card and speaker combo here.
Yes, a 5.1 multimedia speaker system for this low price is too good to be true...you get what you pay for! How did this get to be THX certified? Each speaker sounds drastically different from the other, mostly in the high frequencies. The subwoofer is very boomy and can not be turned down enough to cross over to the satellites at an acceptable level. The boom can be only be attenuated by stuffing a pair of socks in the port! Audio on this system sounds like garbage. My little $30 Altec Lansings sound better than this crap.
If you want a decent 5.1 system, save up for the Klipsch 5.1 Ultra. Yes, it is more money, but it is worth it in the quality and sonic performance of the components. The sub is tight (no boominess here, folks) and can be set at a balanced level in relation to the satellites. And the sats have a much better audible frequency response...and they all match each other very closely. And go figure, this one doesn't have THX certification...hmmm.
I received these speakers to replace my old set of z560s and I must say that, on balance, I'm not impressed. The packaging is smooth, and the speakers look good, with a removable front grill for those who prefer the more aggressive look. The setup was simple and straight forward-- everything was color coded and such. Those things aside, however, these speakers have very little to impress. The most important factor, in my opinion, about a set of speakers is the sound quality. In that regard, these speakers are rather disappointing. The bass is overpowering and loose, and the mid-tones are lacking. That aside, the speakers sound reasonably crisp, but they certainly aren't audiophile quality. The wired remote is poorly designed and ugly. Whereas the z560s used standard speaker cables, the speakers for the z5300 satellites are proprietary RCA type cables which cannot be detached from the speakers. The cables are rather short, to boot. The speakers have rotating bases to allow for wall mounting, but they're pretty cheesy and poorly designed. Lastly, the speakers really aren't all that powerful. Whereas the z560s where amazingly loud if you turned up the volume, there's nothing impressive about turning the volume all the way up with my z5300s. It's true that these speakers only cost ~$150, but for that matter, so did the z560s, which were a heck of a lot more impressive set of speakers. If you want a powerful set of speakers with decent audio fidelity then save your money for a set of Klipsche ProMedias or a low end receiver set-up.
Given the THX qualification, I expected more out of these speakers. Unfortunately, they did not even compare with my Klipsch ProMedia 4.1s. If all you want is a lot of bass for computer games or movies, then these speakers are great and a good price for 5.1. If you want something more, especially for music, then you have to spend more. I'm getting the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 Ultras instead.
Pros: Great sound. Like a previous customer said, these speakers don't over modulate when you turn it waaay up. Also, the sound is deceptive; I had my music playing at a low level but because of the sub woofer my neghbor (I live in an apartment) said he could hear it in his living room. The Subwoofer is nigh indestructible! I mean it is like one big metal box with an amp in the back. It sounds great too when I am bumpin' that Pastor Troy and T.I. THX certified. Remote to control the different speakers. set up was straightforward and pretty self explanatory. Cons: Remote is not wireless, which for me would have been a plus since i like to listen to my music collection on the computer while I am playing video games across the room. That's the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. However, that may not be a problem for other gamers who use their pc to play games, which I don't do much. Summary: Also there is a "matrix" feature which creates a full surround sound effect from cd's and games that don't have a 5.1 soundtrack which is also cool. All in all it is a great system, especially at $150. Even with the remote problem (which is minor) I am glad I chose this system. I also just ordered the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Sound Card because the reviewers for that say it increases the sound experience even more; so I have GOT to check that out.
