Great glass, lids are not good

We've had this set for about 3 years now. Purchased for 18 dollars.

The durability is great, as you would expect from a Pyrex product. The glass is about 3/16 inch thick and holds well against heat and even impact. Will not get stained at all even when leaving food in for a long period of time.

PROS:
- thick glass
- durable
- good variety of sizes
- price
- oven ready

CONS:
- the lids are too tight for the containers and are very difficult to fit in. After 3 years of minimal use they have now started to break.
- you have to be very careful if you store them stacked together. If you stack 2 of the same size, they tend to stick and/or form a vaccum inside. When detaching, they can break.

In summary, for 18 - 20 bucks this is a great set if you don't mind the lower quality lids.

Lids crack and do not hold up to regular use

I purchased the 14 piece set almost three years ago and I have been disappointed with the quality of the lids. The set includes 7 bowels and seven lids (four 2-cup capacity and three 4-cup capacity bowls with matching lids). They arrived with one of large lids already split on one side. It was too much trouble to pack up and ship back so I intended to call Pyrex to request a replacement, but I never got around to it. Within two years two the lids on the remaining two large bowls split on the sides too. The small lids are okay. This is a clearly a design flaw. Pyrex needs to use a higher quality plastic, maybe blend it with silicone or make it a bit heavier - especially at today's crazy price of $28 for this set. I paid $18 in February, 2013 - that's a 40% increase! These might be found cheaper at BB&B or one of the other box stores.

Great glass containers, awful lids!

The glass containers are great, the lids are awful! This pyrex set is described as being microwave and top-shelf dishwasher safe. The reality is that the lids sag, deform, expand, and lose their ability to seal, or even stay on, very easily. This set of containers has become practically useless for me. The lids have become deformed from just about anything: putting them in the microwave or dishwasher, putting them on while food is still warm, or even stacking three of them when they are full. If I want to bring food to work, I now have to cut a piece of cling wrap and put it over the top, then put the lid over that, and I still have to make sure to keep them upright, otherwise they will leak or the lid will fall off entirely. The glass containers are great of course: they are super strong, and are dishwasher and microwave safe. I kept the containers so that I can store food in them in the fridge.

I've had pyrex in the past and had much better luck, so I'm not sure why this set is so bad. I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

A Highly Recommended Set

After learning about BPA and lots of other food contaminants, I decided to get a glass food storage set and eventually decided on this set. At first, I didn't know what to do with the large bowl, but I started taking my lunch salad to work in it and I have plenty of room to shake on a little dressing to cover everything.

I've now had this set for over two years and they've been in the freezer for more than 6 months at a time, the oven for 2 hours at a time, and the microwave for 12 minutes at a time. They've been through countless cycles in the dishwasher and I've done just about everything to these dishes except use them on top of the stove and shoot them with a rifle. They've withstood everything wonderfully.

The top snaps on very tightly. I can fill it with soup and put it in my lunch bag to carry to work - and when I'm there, there's not a drip in sight. The key to getting the top on properly seems to be fitting it on one side and then running your hands, from that spot that's on correctly, around the dish to fit the other side of the lid on the other side of the dish. The lids do not fit on like Tupperware, where you lay the top on the container and push down.

The only problems I've ever had with the set is that the bowls are very smooth and, when washing them by hand, they would slip right out of my hands. I couldn't get a good grip on them. The other issue I've had is that the glass gets very, very hot and, because of the perfectly round shape, it's very difficult to grab or move them when they're hot (e.g. to pull out of the oven or microwave). Typically, I have to use a pair of tongs to drag the bowl onto an oven mitt or towel. Another thing to keep in mind is that, because the sides of the bowls are straight, they do not stack very well. One dish will sit on top of another (if they are the same size), but they will not slide into each other (like plastic will). This set will require more storage space in your cabinets.

Overall, I highly recommend this set.

Disappointed ~ Lids have changed

Just wanted to let folks know in case, like me, they thought they were buying the same product they may have purchased a couple of years ago. The lids on these are not microwavable safe. I have a couple of other sets like this, same size bowls, same configuration of sizes, same lid color. So when I ordered these I mistakenly thought I was getting .. wait for it ... the same thing I already had. I sometimes leave the lid sitting loosely on top of a bowl whose contents I am warming, just to keep down splatters in the microwave. When I recently warmed something using this same method, the lid got all warped and weird. I took a closer look and noticed that they now say, 'storage,' under the 'Pyrex,' brand.

I can live with this change, but I think it's an unfortunate one and wonder if this is yet more proof of the brand's seeming demise. It would have been so easy for Pyrex to simply have made the new, storage only lids in a different color so customers know at a glance what they are grabbing. Just fyi.
