5.0 out of 5 stars Kentucky Fried Chicken!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 24, 2011
The story of Seattle band The Gits is probably the saddest story I have ever heard and you will too in the history of rock and roll. I won't dwell on it but to summarise briefly, Mia Zapata their charming and charismatic singer was brutally beaten, raped and strangled to death by the drawstrings of her own hoodie in a stranger killing that stunned the city, walking home one night in the early hours of July 7th 1993. Her body laid out in a JC pose making it all the more eerie. Thanks to DNA breakthrough 10yrs later her alleged killer who thoroughly denied all charges was caught and banged up for 36yrs. This of course cannot and must not take anything away from the superlative material that's on offer here on their second and final album, coz in my opinion punk rock never got any better than this wonderful collection of passionate and soulful songs performed with the utmost conviction and honesty, some studio, some live and some outtakes. What we have here is a quite simply stunning, unique and will never again happen so please approach with respect, crank it up and pour a beer or two and most of all ENJOY!

From opener Cousin Bob, the band are in their stride and its not long before Mia takes the helm with her deep, powerful and commanding voice and race through with some catchy verses avoiding any pop pitfalls. Guilt From Within sees them getting heavier with some mean riffs from guitarist Joe Spleen who never indulges too much, allowing the band to all shine equally as they do throughout this album. Jack Endino's production is legendary and really captures The Gits in all their earthy glory. Seaweed was ironically dedicated to Mia's close friend Stephanie Sargent of 7 Year Bitch who died a year earlier from an overdose and is a superb example of the power of this band who can deliver heavy tunes and make them stick in your head. There is a beautiful soulful version of Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come which shows us where Mia draws her influences as she makes it her own. Precious Blood is an old classic and here it is just so touching and one of Mia's most heartfelt compositions that bares its all. Beauty Of The Rose shows us their purist punk ethics and is a fast one. Daily bread is my fave Gits tune and its the longest one clocking at 4.32mins displaying all of Mia's histrionics as she sings about social injustice and depravation on a hotbead of seizmic riffs and basslines with powerhouse drumming. Its another anthem in their cannon of many and here its a live version as her vocals were never finished, sadly. Drinking Song sums up this band best because lets face it that's what they were all about, having a good time and raisng a glass or two.

There are some lovely moments before and after her acoustic Social Love when Mia interacts with the crowd who embrace her wonderful eccentricity and cuteness and she sings it like the blues singer she is with that deep and husky voice of hers before going into the full steam electric assault. "Here's to the prisoners' books" she exclaims, "give em literature!". The Gits had so much to offer as Mia's amazing dynamics and range showed so much unrealised potential that was hinted at here, her Kentucky Fried Chicken theme would have gone down a storm! Sadly it was never to be. The band also offer up Italian Song which is their lighthearted tribute to Mia. There is also New Fast One which defaults as an instrumental due to her unfinished vocals on some tracks. Sign of The Crab is their most brutal song and is almost prophetically haunting in the verses "Go ahead and slice me up, spread me all across this town. Cause you know you're the one that won't be found . . don't ruin me for what you cannot have!".

The lyrics to this disturbing song are ominously omitted, but that's just three lines and it haunts me every time i hear her sing them. Mia was very intuitive and her band said she was not happy about being back in Seattle after a tour. Did she spell danger, did she know something we didn't? If she did, she's taken that secret to her grave. There is also a storming live rendition so brace yourselves for it can make uneasy listening at times in hindsight. To make up for her unfinished work there are some great live renditions of New Fast One with vocals, Seaweed, Wirlwind and Crab and one can detect The Gits sound even better live with Mia's voice really projecting in all its glory coming across like a raging Smith and Joplin meets Holiday with hints of Bessie Smith. The band remind me of the legendary Dead Kennedys at times and their Monty Pythonesque humour is unique to them making them almost an English band. Mia maintains her uniqueness in crafting her own style that transcends her influences. I could listen to her all day and one can't help wonder what might have been had fate not dealt such a brutal, cruel and untimely blow on such a gifted and rising star. Her death has left a monumental hole in the arts.

    『Home Alive』を聴いて、おっ、と思った人は間違いなく買いです。
    曲も結構良いし。

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gits: Excellent grunge
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 12, 2013
Not much to add to the comprehensive review by Mr Shukla. This is great, powerful grunge at its basics (punk being the roots, one can discern passages from New York Dolls). The talent and feeling of Mia Zapata stands up. As to the band work, it is remarkable how none of the elements (guitar, drums) overcomes, but all complement each other. Recommended. Volume to be set to 7 at least.

It's unfortunate but to me this is a step down from the first album which is a 5 star effort. The first 3 tracks are good (Seaweed being the standout by a mile) but after that this album trails off. The short career of The Gits is desperately sad but they're best remembered through the first album, which is incredible.
