The DVD is a small window to the band holding the Rock and Roll Torch on one night. A window to a tour of a band at its peak...can they get better?
The members of Pearl Jam truly love music and it shows. They wear their influences on their sleeves, The Who, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, Iron Maiden (McCready), and it shows in their genuine wish to put on a good performance worth the money of a concert ticket. The night filmed at Madison Square Garden in NYC may not have been their highlight concert from 2003's Riot Act tour but it's a cross-section of one night with the band. And if you are a fan and happened to miss PJ on that tour, it's one way to be a part of what happened.
Boom Gaspar is a benefit added addition to the PJ 5 and truly elevates Crazy Mary with an inspired Hammond Organ romp. Though Eddie is in the spotlight, each band member contributes and the camera spends isn't mono-mano focused on Ed the whole time. It's the little things you get to see in concert recordings that make the DVD worth the price of admission. Mike McCready loses himself from time to time becoming some alter-ego guitar god. You can tell when it happens because his eyes are closed head faced upwards, in the zone. His guitar playing becomes otherworldly wicked. The man can play. The DVD reveals each member has his talents...Jeff Ament has the groove and energy, Stone Gossard has a knack for songcraft (though his guitar skills are better left providing rhythm and not lead), Matt Cameron has a precise straightforward drumming style (and gifted musically evidenced by his song You Are), Eddie is truly gifted, but Mike McCready elevates the band above just another good Rock and Roll outfit. The free-flow jam on "Even Flow," is always good but this night stands out. Each band member plays off the other and Stone Gossard give McCready room to soar. Other guitarist maybe more technical, other guitarist may be more speedy, other guitarist may have more individual style, but McCready truly adds soul to all elements of his playing. It's truly a notch above in Rearviewmirror, Crown of Thorns, Yellow Ledbetter...how he plays the keyboard part of Baba O'Riley will boggle the mind...in fact I would dub it mind-boggling.
There are fun extras here watching Eddie ape Bush in Bushleaguer, a "Fortunate Son," montage of all the bands PJ played with in the Riot Act tour, a wonderfully talented solo performance of Eddie's Dead Man (get Lost Dogs for the studio version). Pearl Jam has lasting power and outlived the hype of the "grunge" movement in the early 90's. Other bands that got caught up in the overwhelming pressure of popularity that movement caused either aren't around anymore or aren't relevant. This Disc captures a band that has stayed true to its roots and true to the music. Don't miss a concert in your very own living room with one of the best bands playing today in their prime.

Huge Pearl Jam fan here...but I have to say I was a little bit disappointed by this concert. I have watched a lot of Pearl Jam concert videos on You Tube (OK, I have a bit of an Eddie Vedder obsession too) and this concert at Madison Square Garden in 2003 just seems a bit off. They don't seem to have the energy they usually have at their live shows. Eddie seems way more subdued than usual -- no crazy antics, dancing, climbing, etc. like he usually does. He even messes up the timing/lyrics on "Even Flow," and seems a bit drunk. Even their cover of "Baba O'Reilly" seems perfunctory compared to how they've done it at other shows. Maybe the band was just tired that night.

But still, let's face it -- it's Pearl Jam! One of the best rock bands in the world today! So the music is great, and they even do some songs with guests like Ben Harper and the Buzzcocks, and there are some great extras like Eddie singing "Throw Your Arms Around Me" with the guy who originally wrote the song. Other extras include "Fortunate Son," "Down," and "All Those Yesterdays" (in which they do a tribute to all the road crew and staff).

If you are only a casual fan, I'd recommend another DVD instead maybe ("Immagine in Cornice" is a good one). If you are already a die-hard PJ fan looking to complete your collection, then get this DVD.

i recorded a shorter edited version of this from direct tv onto VHS when they showed the concert for free on december 12th 2003 i watched it religiously until now the tape skips and wont play anymore like it used to. so i went searching for it and found this dvd set (2 disk). i wasnt sure if this was the same concert but was pleasently surprised when it got here and i found it it was in fact the same concert they aired on direct tv in 2003 but this is the FULL concert. pretty much direct tv took out songs that said the F word. they didnt just edit it out , they took the songs out completly. also they took out songs that were to long like daughter. i was surprised to see all the footage that i didnt get to see on direct tv.

Some of the songs where he drops the F word that I havent seen before i was kind of glad they got edited out but i say about 6 or so songs that were edited should have been in the vid like the songs from the buzzcocks they were really good and they do a good version of teenage wasteland by the who that should have been in the direct tv concert but it wasnt.

most of the songs are really relaxing and have a great vibe and flow to them then they switch it up and play faster songs like evenflow or spin around in circles. they have a perfect mix of mellow and fast that just fits the mood and i love watching this concert over and over where most concerts you watch 4 or 5 times and get sick of it.

the cover of the vid shows him smashing a guitar but they dont show it in the concert. he does drink a few bottles of wine and smokes a cig during the show so if you have little kids and you are trying to teach them not to drink or smoke maybe this vid isnt for them but more for adults, also because of the cursing. the concert is one 2 disk with tons of songs on each one. it will keep you entertained for at least 2 hours.

i hope this reviews helps in your decision to buy.

This DVD along with Imagine in Cornice are among the best shows Ive seen, not just because Im a Pearl Jam fan but due the fact the care the band does with releases giving the fans a high quality produt, in these times you can see any video or get songs by Internet, thats cool to get a product in your hands and feel excitement before you you watch in the DVD player.
Many songs from Ten to Rioct ACt and great versions as usual, great show and the vibe of the audience in a legendary place as MSG its a plus that will thrill all the fans and maybe convert non-fans.
A Must for all that appreciate the old and good rock ' roll.
