Great item to retrieve files from dead laptop

I bought this enclosure to save some files from the hard drive in my old IBM Thinkpad TP380Z that had finally gone belly-up following too many tests of gravity administered by my wife. I would like to tell you how detailed Simpletech's instruction manual was, but there wasn't one. The lack of a manual is pretty poor, but anyone with some technological know-how should have no problem using simple screwdrivers to open the enclosure and install their 2.5 inch HD. If you are using this on a USB connection you will have to either use the AC adapter or the PS2 inline adapter to power the unit. The enclosure does ship with the AC adapter, the PS2 adapter and a SHORT USB cable, but no Firewire cable. My home PC is USB 1.1, and I get a message about the unit not being able to transfer at full rate from WindowsXP but it works fine, just not too quickly. At work, on the newer PC with USB 2.0, data transfer speeds are pleasingly fast. There were no problems with Windows recognizing the USB drive. The unit also ships with some backup software for backing up your computer, but I can't comment on its use since I haven't bothered with it. Simple, Effective, Reliable and a Good Value

Although my unit did not look exactly like the PIC on Amazon, it did what it was supposed to do. I had a laptop that went belly up and it seemed like the hard drive was the problem. I did not feel like paying a tech $100.00 plus to look at it, especially since I owned a computer business for 10 years. But, I could not diagnose my laptop since it would not boot.

Enter the SimpleDrive...after it arrived, I installed the drive from the non functional laptop, plugged the SimpleDrive into the USB port of another computer and voila...I was able to determine the laptop drive was going bad.

I then purchased a new laptop drive, installed it and my laptop was back up and running. I then sold the SimpleTech on ebay for $7.00 more than what I paid for it.

It's a great unit, easy to use and does what it is supposed to do...as in my case, it can double as a diagnostic tool. Great stuff. Uncle Willie

Very dependable and portable

(I've been using two of these for 3 weeks now.)

There's plenty of hard-drive enclosures out there. I've tried out several. This one is by far the best and dependable:

-Handy short ATTACHED USB cable so you won't have to lug around a USB cable. It also clicks into place when not used so it's out of the way.

-My PC and my wife's laptop easily recognized it. I unplug and plug it in all the time and the computers always recognize it!(Windows XP)

-Attractive monotone silver/gray

-Did not need to use two USB ports.

-Includes rubber 'feet' to finish off a great product. This comes in handy when you're stacking them one on top of each other.

What to avoid in other external hard drive enclosures:

-This one uses a standard USB plug. Others has the mini-USB on one end and a standard on the other. So if you lose that cable, it's not that easily replaceable.

-Others are hard to detect for some reason. I've had others where I had to plug and unplug several times for my PC to recognize it. This one is very dependable.

OVERALL: Absolutely a joy to use and even loook at.

- Rubber feet (for internal shock insulation)

- Short usb cable (easy to pack)

Cons:

- No installation guide

- Y cable didn't work

- No Firewire interface

Has worked flawlessly for over a year

I purchased this enclosure from Amazon about a year ago to keep my music while at work. I have used it 8+ hours a day, every business day for the last year. Never had a problem with it.

It took me less than 5 minutes with a small phillips-head screwdriver to install the drive. Have not had to change anything since.

Although it includes an external power supply I have never needed one. The USB provides enough power for the drive. I have a 60GB notebook drive in it.

The enclosure also comes with some backup software, I believe. I have never used it as that is not why I use the drive.

I highly recommend this product.
