Very exciting but don't watch the movie INSTEAD of reading the play

This is a wonderful film that makes various artistic choices to transfer the characters and plot from a play to a film. If you are viewing this as a way of aiding comprehension of the play, be aware that the film-makers break up certain scenes, re-ordering the events, relocate many scenes to take place outdoors and to include more physical movement and action, add and subtract dialogue to editorialize somewhat and to steer the viewer towards a certain, typical interpretation of the play. Also, the film-makers opted to include the normally omitted 2nd scene of Act II of the play, to invent a visit of Abigail to Proctor's jail-cell in which she tries to convince him to run away with her, and to add a scene at the end where we see Proctor hung with two other accused witches (reminiscent of you know who). These changes do make the play more filmic and, perhaps, interesting for a modern audience, but I find the last two issues unfortunate holywoodizations. Strong performances all around.

I enjoyed this movie immensely, even though the subject matter was very disturbing. the Salem witch trials were unbelievable in scope, only ending with the deaths of respected townspeople. My interest extends in that I am a direct descendant of Rebecca Towne Nurse. The movie was brilliantly acted and truly is worth watching. I highly recommend this picture.

I bought this movie to show to the American Literature classes I was teaching at a local high school after the students had read the play. It's a great movie with excellent casting of Daniel Day-Lewis as John Proctor and Winona Ryder as Abigail Williams. Williams did such a great job, that my students' really hated her character and how she caused a group of girls to condemn men and women as witches. As a result, many people died in Salem, Massachusetts.

Daniel Day-Lewis in one of this best roles as the long-suffering John Proctor. Winona Ryder is wonderful as the mostly crazy, obsessed with John Proctor character. The cinematography accurately depicts the mood of this film as bleak and somber and, from what I've read, deals with the facts of the Salem Witch Trials pretty accurately. This film will tug at your heartstrings as John Proctor and his wife realize how much they love each other and the price there is to pay for that love. Get your tissues for the end.

I've seen "The Crucible" on stage but have never seen this film adaptation.
It is powerfully acted, but my only gripe is the extent to which the makeup artists strove for realism in the depiction of Daniel-Day Lewis' dental hygiene - that was a bit too much, as he cries at the end "just leave me my name" the power of that statement is sort of lost in the grimace of brown teeth.

Otherwise, this is as close to being a perfect adaptation as I can see being made.
Even Winona Ryder, who is usually insipid and poorly cast - shines in this film.

Sobering story about the challenges of finding the truth, as affected by cultural/religious beliefs, hidden motive and insular group dynamics.
Based loosely on the Salem Witch Trials, the story centers around a generally respected man (John Proctor) who strays from his marriage and gets involved with an adolescent girl who becomes obsessed with ridding him of his wife so she can have him to herself. She is caught dancing in the forest at night in a dark ritual that many of the young village girls have joined, the purpose of which is to conjure feelings of ardor in their respective love interests. Their christian morals are subsequently questioned and in order to save themselves from judgement, the girls begin to feign visions, faintings, seizures and all manner of hysterics to convince the town elders of their innocence and that they are in fact receiving supernatural messages about other townspeople who the girls accuse of witchcraft and other evil deeds. Many townspeople are found guilty as a result and are basically scapegoated and hanged. Old grudges surface to indict yet more and more people who are subsequently hanged, including John Proctor. It demonstrates how fear-mongering, anxiety, restrictive social norms of behavior and jealousy can lead to deadly results.

Great movie, Fair Blu Ray release

Video Quality of this Blu Ray release is a bit on the soft side at times, however it is still an improvement over the DVD. I dont believe this was transferred from any new high-def master, but If you are a fan of this great film adaptation of the famous Arthur Miller play, you will certainly want to own this release.
