Product Description

Product Description

Deitrich Bonhoeffer was a young German theologian who offered one of the first clear voices of resistance to Adolph Hitler. Bonhoeffer openly challenged his church to stand with the Jews in their time of need, and eventually joined the plot to kill Hitler. Extensive research in the U.S and Europe brings to life this amazing story of moral courage. Extraordinary archival footage is interwoven with interviews with friends, family and students of Bonhoeffer, with historians and theologians, and with the words of Bonheoffer himself, read by Maria Klaus Brandauer.

Review

A touching narrative on the nature of faith. Powerful, disturbing, and shocking. --New York Times

A valuable and complex portrait of a rare individual, who saw the light in a time of spiritual darkness, and had the courage to follow it. --Village Voice

Bonhoeffer shows how extraordinary courage can spring from unlikely sources. An inspiring portrait of one of the great moral heroes of the 20th century. Undeniably poignant and thought-provoking. --Minneapolis Star Tribune

Having just read Bonhoeffer's Letters and Writings from Prison, I was pretty well "set up" for this documentary film. As I turned the DVD on, I felt very tense and even near tears from the beginning of the film. I wanted to see every minute but could hardly bear to watch. This is a documentary of Bonhoeffer's life, including glimpses into his childhood, his experiences as a young adult, his writings, and the days in prison for his small part in the conspiracy to assassinate Hitler. In some ways, he was an ordinary man, though at the same time in other ways, extraordinary, and I knew everything was leading to his doom, or as he put it, to his life. I would never attempt to analyze or describe Bonhoeffer's theology, but I find it huge, requiring reading and re-reading. In spite of his martyrdom and that of many others, Hitler's killing machine rolled on unabated. Did they change anything? Not in terms of "taking on the guilt of killing a killer," since all assassination attempts failed. But Bonhoeffer's "fall-back" to doing the will of God in daily life, no matter what, as did so many other famous martyrs, indeed has changed the world. It is horrific to witness the development of Hitler's machine that murdered tens of millions of people, while the world turned away in doubt and disbelief. This film brings up again the enormity of the Nazi atrocities in WWII and gives more useful detail into why it all happened to begin with. In one speech in the film, Hitler accuses the Jews of trying to kill the Germans, and he said the Germans would fight back. Amazing propaganda, devoured by the people. Most of the German people believed Hitler's lies and walked in lockstep with his barbarism. Few stood up to him and most knew the truth too late. There are many documentary clips in this film that I have never seen before, though a few on them have been on the History Channel on tv..

This description of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, though very informative & interesting may be suitable mostly for those who have an in depth understanding & knowledge of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A knowledge & understanding of the German language & customs & culture is also an advantage insofar as gaining a better understanding of the film & its ideas.

Bonhoeffer's life is certainly worthy of popular examination. This DVD provides a factual account of many crossroads in his life, but does so with a feel reminiscent of classroom educational films of old. As a "movie" experience, it doesn't exhibit the excellence of, say, Ken Burn's Civil War series. Still, until someone makes a better documentary about Bonhoeffer, this one is the tops and so I give it four stars. I would encourage interested readers to review books by and about Dietrich Bonhoeffer to understand more fully the impact that this man had and why many regard him as a modern saint. And, no, I'm not Lutheran. d:c)

Of all the documentary/biographies this easily rank my #1.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is a compelling person, whose faith and life were consistent against Nazi evil. While I enjoy any well-done biography of the man, this production ranks above the other, newer efforts. First, it incorporatess commentary from family and others who worked with him. That generation is now gone, making this a historically significant piece of work that emphasizes reporting/documentary. This aspect is enhanced by the black and white format; it feels like the 1940s. Second, it is developed thematically, so that the significance of how Bonhoeffer impacted the church and the world in the context of WWII Germany, and the German Resistance is powerfully conveyed.

Having used this in video format for college applied Ethics classes as well as writing classes learning to construct critical commentaries, for 15 years or more, I can honestly say that this one 90-minute documentary has had a more profound effect on more students, than anything else I have used in teaching. I've seen it at least 50 times, and it never wears thin. The challenge of Bonhoeffer's life and work needs to be presented to succeeding generations. He teaches us how to live, and how to die.

I'm SO grateful it is being rereleased on DVD, as it is one of the most important items in my vast video collection.

Earlier this year, I finished reading Eric Metaxas' Bonhoeffer. It has to be one of the most inspirational and challenging biographies available anywhere. It wasn't long before I discovered this DVD. This film covers much of the same ground as Metaxas' work, but the interviews and archival photos/footage really make it come alive. Seeing with your own eyes how Hitler mesmerized the masses with his cultic charisma is a stark warning of how the idolatry of a "mis-leader" can happen anywhere. There are also some captivating interviews with the likes of Eberhard Bethge, others who knew Bonhoeffer personally, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and contemporary scholars.

Believers can learn some unexpected things while watching this documentary. One concerns how individualism, rooted in the Enlightenment, brought great harm to western Christianity. Another is that Bonhoeffer, who is often viewed as a stern intellectual, found emotions to be a central part of the Christian experience while living in New York. Finally, the ease at which German churches capitulated to an evil regime is further instructive.

One nice special feature of this DVD regards classic Bonhoeffer quotations. On topics ranging from "cheap grace" to finding God's will, the martyred theologian still has much to teach us.

Two weaknesses of the DVD: Subtitles are needed to understand sometimes difficult German accents. Also, though this is great stuff, is the price tag of $25 necessary?

Although over the years, I have been privileged to hear and see a lot saidand written about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, this documentary brought him tolife in a way that even the feature film "Bonhoeffer - Agent of Grace"could not. So many eye-witness accounts and even contemporary footage ofBonhoeffer and his family, friends and colleagues attested to thehumanity, courage and dignity of this man. The film-maker was lucky to beable to capture the witness of so many of Bonhoeffer's pupils and friends, many of whom are now no longer with us and whom I was very fortunate tomeet through my father, who was Pastor of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Churchin south London.
The church of All Souls, Langham Place very kindly arranged a showing ofthis film in January 2004. I knew nothing about it in advance and I shallbe forever grateful to the dear friend who rang me up to make sure I didnot miss it.

Both Christianity and humanity owes a debt to Pastor Bonhoeffer having recently been to his place of execution at Flossenburg Concentration Camp . A moving account in haunting black and white from those who knew and where part of his life ,while Satan and his disciples made their intentions clear during the Third Reich .

A wonderful documentary that needs your attention as everyone gives their personal stories , worth doing some background historic reading on Bonhoeffer to understand the significance of a remarkable Christian who stood firm when Christianity was about to collapse
