Product Description

Amazon.com

Amazon.com Product Description If you're after state-of-the-art picture and sound, Samsung's DVD-HD941 is a prime candidate for your home theater. The DVD player packs everything from Faroudja DCDi-enhanced HD component-video and HDMI digital-video outputs to sophisticated high-definition upconversion (for high-definition and HD-ready TVs) and processing abilities for the audio-only SACD (Super Audio CD) and DVD-Audio formats.

The player uses Faroudja's DCDi (Directional Correlation Deinterlacing) technology, which is designed to eliminate the jagged edges along diagonal image lines resulting from video interpolation. DCDi monitors image-edge transitions and fills in the gaps between frames. The player upconverts standard-definition material (480i, what we have on conventional TV) to enhanced- and high-definition quality (480p, 720p, 768p, or 1080i, depending on your HDTV). The result: higher resolution from conventional sources and sharper images with few motion artifacts. The player's HDMI digital-video output may be used for lossless video transmission between the player and compatible TVs and computer monitors, and the player comes with an HDMI-to-DVI converter for use with DVI-compliant devices.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or A/V receiver) with an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV). HDMI supports SD, ED, or high-definition (HD) video, plus multichannel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

SACD and DVD-Audio media both offer super-high-fidelity sound. DVD-Audio discs provide 192 kHz/24-bit multichannel and stereo sound, high storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs. These discs often have compressed Dolby Digital soundtracks for listening on standard DVD players, but true DVD-A decoding is required for full sonic appreciation. Depending on the disc, Sony's proprietary SACD format provides multichannel and/or stereo sound, often presented in a dual-layer format compatible with both standard CD players (at standard resolution) and SACD-equipped players like the DVD-HD941 (for full-resolution playback).

As an antipiracy measure, the DVD-HD941 performs its own decoding of both DVD-Audio and SACD signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate multichannel DVD-A and SACD releases.

A set of stereo and a set of multichannel analog-audio outputs route audio from DVD-A/SACD media as well as from Dolby Digital- and DTS-encoded DVDs to you’re A/V receiver. If you're not planning to use the DVD-A/SACD capability for multichannel programming, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for simpler connection with your receiver. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

From the Manufacturer

Samsung announces the advent of audio/videophile-quality DVD entertainment with its next-generation of upconversion DVD players: the DVD-HD941 and the DVD-HD841. Delivering stunning, cinema-quality DVD playback, both players use a fully digital process to provide high-definition resolution such as 1080i, 768p, and 720p signals, making it ideal for those who want to get the most out of their HD displays and existing DVD titles. Both models have a host of advanced features such as DVI and HDMI outputs for uncompressed digital video. They both also offer increased audio capabilities as well, including Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio--making then not only the best-performing players, but also the most complete.

The DVD-HD941 additionally features no-compromise video performance enhancements like Faroudja's Directional Correlational De-interlacing (DCDi) technology, HDMI output, black level adjustment, increased resolution settings and discrete IR codes. Faroudja's DCDi eliminates the jagged edges that appear when standard interlaced video is viewed on progressive-scan displays for a smooth and natural picture.

Currently, consumers who have upgraded their home theaters with HDTVs do not have an abundance of high-definition programming available. The DVD-HD841 offers an alternate solution by upconverting a DVD's native resolution (480p) to output high-definition formats (720p/1080i). The most impressive attribute of this upconverting process is that it takes place completely in the digital domain, which eliminates data loss and other artifacts associated with analog convergence. As a result, the process opens up a vast library of DVD material for consumers who want to watch digitally enhanced movies on their HDTV displays and enjoy the highest quality video and audio available on the DVD market.

After reading numerous reviews about the Samsung DVD-HD941 and its counterparts, my expectation level was to hopefully notice somewhat of an improvement over playing DVDs on my HDTV with a conventional, non-HDMI digital-video type player. I did not want to spend a small fortune on the high end players like Denon and Integra. To my surprise the picture quality was far better that what I had been expecting for the price. I was very happy with the picture quality in all 480p, 720p, 768p, or 1080i modes. I hooked it up to my RCA HD61LPW165 and my Sony KF-42WE610 HDTVs and did not notice too much of a difference in picture quality, both being very clear. The sound level dropped somewhat on the RCA HDTV but maintained itself quite well on the Sony. It appears as though the player is limited to the response of the type of HDTV. I would definitely recommend this player, espectially due to the price. I will be ordering a second one to complement my other HDTV.

I was hoping this DVD player would be different but again I was disappointed. It does have a nice design BUT...

DVD-R's seem to be the most difficult DVD's to play. It did play some BUT not all of them. I have read about how you cannot create a readable backup DVD-R or cheaper DVD-R's cannot be read. I found this to be untrue. When I purchased another Samsung DVD player (progressive scan model) it had no problems playing any of my DVD-R's.

The second problem is the upconvert process. I have a Hitachi Ultravision, and I saw no difference when upconverting, even with a Monster HDMI cable. After speaking with several individuals, allegedly knowledgeable about this subject, I found that the upcovert, when it does work, doesn't make any significant impact.

I have a Sony KP-57WS520 rear projection CRT television. I have heard that with CRT displays, an upconverting dvd player will not make much difference, and I'm going to have to agree with that. Maybe, when used with an LCD or DLP set, this dvd player would shine, but with my tv, I actually prefered using the component outputs to the HDMI output, for two reasons:

1) The HDMI output was super dark, so much so that details would simply be lost in dark backgrounds. It couldn't be cleared up by adjusting the tv's brightest or color levels either. THe dark background would get lighter, but the details would stay hidden.

2) My television does a much better job of upconverting the 480i dvd signal than the dvd player did. The Sony has a nice DRC circuit that produces a very good picture when fed a 480i signal. When given an upconverted signal from this dvd player, the DRC circuit is disabled. So I'm forced to either choose the component outputs with the tv doing its magic, or the HDMI output with the dvd player doing its magic. The component outputs option was clearly the winner, and when I compared the picture using this dvd player's component outputs and the picture I got with my previous dvd player's component outputs, there was no noticeable difference. So I decided to return the unit.

Another thing to note, which makes me glad I don't have to stick with this unit - the remote sucks, the menus are terrible, and the settings kept being reset to the defaults. For instance, there is a setting for turning off this annoying message that pops up when the HDMI is connected (even if you're using the component connection), saying that HDMI audio is disabled. It pops up every time you change the chapter or start a title. You can turn it off in the settings menu, but it kept coming back the next time I used the dvd player, and (one other annoying feature) you can't even change the setting unless the dvd player is stopped. So I kept starting a movie, only to find the setting was switched back to ON, and then having to stop the movie, change the setting, and restart the movie (or just live with it). Very lame.

This DVD player works fine but as with many of the other reviews it has a few flaws. As for one after the unit is setup it will lose the setup features when you turn it off. It has a good picture and works well with SACD and DVD Audio but the remote needs direct pointing at the unit to operate. For the price and what you get it really is not bad.
