Used this to propel ping-pong balls out of ABS tubing for a robotics project. Drew enough power while spinning up to disable our microcontroller. Sounded absolutely terrifying. Would recommend.

You can't beat these fans for cooling. The difference in air output between the Tornado and a regular 80mm fan is night and day. I placed 2 of these fans on equipment in an office server room. They provide much better cooling than the old fans. These are the most powerful fans I ever used, but they are also the loudest. The sound is comparable to a vacuum cleaner. I can hear these fans 25 feet down the hall from our server room. I'm considering getting a fan control to turn these down when I have to work in the server room. I definitely would not use these in a home environment without a fan control to throttle them down. According to the specs, the fan pulls 1 amp which is a lot of power for a fan. In conclusion, you can't do much better in terms of cooling, but the noise is likely a deal breaker for many.

it is indeed loud, but boy that air output is the craziest I've ever seen. I'm using them as case fans in a couple computers but i'm guessing if i replaced the fan on my hyper tx3 with this, the temperature would drop several degrees celsius. comes with 4 extra screws, actually gets power from 4-pin IDE power plug but still uses 3-pin fan plug (with only 1 wire) for motherboard fan speed control.

This is a great cooling fan, albeit a loud cooling fan. I created a coupler by cutting a 2-liter soda bottle in half and zip-tying the neck half around the fan. Then I used 3 feet of old CPAP tubing, which has a nice rubber ending that fits perfectly to the soda bottle, to create a small but powerful air handler that moves colder air inside my kegerator up into the draft tower. Works great. The fan is supplied by: RockBirds DC 12V 2A Switching Power Supply. Only reason for 4 stars not 5 is the noise.

Purchased to cool off a stepper motor driver that I'm mounting inside a custom enclosure.
It's relatively loud, but man does it BLOW! If you stand it on its side, and move your hand near the exhaust side, the force of the air against your hand is enough to drive it across the table. It's pretty impressive.

Hopefully it holds up in a shop environment. It feels well made, would buy again.

Bought this at Newegg back in the 90's. It still runs and sounds as smooth as it did when it was brand new. It's been in over 6 different systems and I even used it on a video card at one point. It's performance is unmatched and still is today. It is very LOUD and was surprised that it did not come with a fan speed controller which is desperately needed. It also vibrates allot so it will need a fan dampener kit as well. If you need a 80mm fan and you don't care that your system may sound like a hair dryer then this is the fan you will want.

Okay, have to admit I laughed my backside off when I fired this fan up. To say it's loud is an understatement. Now yep, many of the reviews on here mention the high volume, but I expected it to be loud compared to other computer fans - many of which are near silent. Nope, this thing sounds like a hair dryer when it gets going!

That said, it WORKS. This thing moves a CRAZY amount of air, and if you're using it to keep yer PC cool, then it WILL do the job. Yes, you'll need earmuffs or noise canceling headphones, but it WORKS. Alas it won't work for what I planned to use it for (cooling a kegerator tower) but I'm sure I'll find another fun project to use this for. (Like a hovercraft!)

I have a few things to add in addition to the other positive reviews of this fan. First is you need to check video reviews of the Tornado so you can get a good appreciation for how loud it really is. Unfortunately, short of installing a fancy liquid cooling system, you have to use high rpm and noisy fans like the Tornado if you need to cool down your personal computer that just keeps heating up. This leads to my second point: If you're going to install the Tornado in a computer which sits near you, you absolutely have to purchase a fan controller as well. An acceptable example available on Amazon:
Scythe Kaze Q 3.5" KQ01-BK-3.5 - Fan speed controller with 4 system fans - black
A controller with its rheostat knobs will let you turn down the speed of the Tornado and keep it quiet when you're not converting video or playing CPU-intensive games. A final note if you get a fan controller: check the specs and make sure it outputs enough watts on each fan channel. The Tornado needs 9.1 watts to reach its rated 6000 rpm and a lot of controllers out there stop at 8 watts per channel. The controller I linked to above outputs up to 12 watts per channel, according to newegg.

edit 5 February 2012

Well, after a few months of stern looks from my wife, I had to find an alternative to the three Tornado "vacuum" fans I had in my desktop. The fans were just too noisy at high RPM but didn't move enough air to cool my CPU and video card at lower RPMs. There's nothing inherently wrong with the fans; they're just not great for having in a desktop that shares a room with the family TV.
