- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 201816:9/5.1 The description shows 5.1. I loaded the movie with anticipation. I was relieved when I saw the indication that it was 5.1. The story is very interesting. There is shooting. I prefer more action and violence. That is why I don't give it 5 stars. Since the story is so good I stayed seated and awake for the entire movie. Thank you, Amazon Prime Video for the recommendation in an email.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2018Jessica Shepard, played by Ashley Judd, is a hardcore cop who has been recently promoted to Inspector. She was raised by John Mills the now Commissioner of the San Francisco Police Department, her father's former partner. She tells people that her parents were killed in an automobile accident. They were not. Her father went off the deep end and killed her mother and then himself.
Jessica picks up strangers in bars reminiscent of "Looking For Mr. Goodbar," only the protagonist in Mr. Goodbar was the victim. Instead, Jessica's sex partners are the victims. In fact, four of her sex partners are brutally murdered, the last one is found in her bed lying next to Jessica.
John Mills is not happy that Jessica picks up guys in bars for one night stands. Jessica's psychiatrist, played by David Straithairn, thinks she has more psychological problems than Jessica is willing to admit. Jessica's partner, Mike, played by Andy Garcia, is concerned that she drinks until she passes out. Jessica is determined to find out who is killing her sex partners. However, she is impeded, for she is arrested for the murders.
Ashley Judd is outstanding as Jessica Shepard. Likewise Samuel L. Jackson is also outstanding as John Mills. Andy Garcia is excellent as Mike. David Straithairn as Dr. Frank, Jessica's Psychiatrist is excellent. The supporting cast is also excellent.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2014Yet, again, I caught a very small bit of Ashley Judd's performance in "Twisted" on television and, of course, it was cut to pieces. So, I decided to purchase the dvd. How surprised was I to find that the film not only included Miss Judd, but Samuel L. Jackson, Andy Garcia AND Russell Wong. (Where has HE been?) All gave strong performances. There are not very many women out there that can give great performances without using fake long hair and lots of cleavage. Well, Ashley Judd can. The price of this dvd was GREAT. The vendor and Amazon stated, outright, that it was a Full Screen Edition and, guess what, I received an INVOICE with the dvd. I will definitely use this merchant through Amazon again.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2019This is a movie about a female detective who drinks way too much and come to fear that she is the one behind a series of slayings. As such it is a psychological study (there's even a psychologist!) in character and depends on the ability of the lead to carry it off.
Judd and the director apparently conceived of the role as one where the detective couldn't address her feelings about a childhood incident and felt compelled to be perfect in every way except for two. Every time I saw Judd wake up after passing out, I wondered how she could she have perfect makeup and keep her job. Every time she picked up a guy at a bar for casual sex, I wondered how she could keep it together as well as she did. This characterization didn't work for me. The final plot twist also bordered on hackneyed, but all of this is just me.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2018I loved everyone in this fun thriller. I see anything with Ashley Judd in it as she is a wonderful actor. Lots of great plot twists.

This 2003 suspense thriller features Jessica Shepard (Ashley Judd) attending a celebratory party due to her promotion to the rank of inspector and transfer to the homicide department. We are thus introduced to various characters including John Mills [Samuel L Jackson] as her mentor after the death of her father, Jimmy Schmidt [Mark Pellegrino] as her ex lover and a secretive stranger at the bar. After leaving the party she heads to a bar where she picks up a stranger. At work she attends her first homicide with her new partner Mike Delmarco (Andy García) and it transpires the deceased is a former one-night stand of hers. As the bodies of her ex lovers pile up she soon falls under suspicion, especially from one of her new colleagues. Her drinking problem grows and she begins to black out for increasingly long periods, doubting her own sanity. Is she the killer -inheriting the tendencies from her serial killer dad, perhaps it's ex Jimmy who takes his frustration on those that have replaced him, is it the new partner who obviously has a crush on her or is it one of her colleagues with their own agenda.
The single disc open to a language selection [German or English], it then goes to the main menu offering play, set up [basically subtitles and hard of hearing], special features [commentaries, making of, deleted and extended scenes] and scene selection. Picture and sound quality is fine and the acting is top notch -even the support cast. The plot doesn't really have many twists as such, but the clever script, directing and acting is designed to throw you in the wrong direction -and for the most part it works. The pace is constant and the film doesn't flag.
This under-rated film is well worth buying at its current price of less than £5 [even with postage] so if you like detective stories then why not give this one a try, but if you want lots of nudity, violence and gore, then look elsewhere. As a 15 rating it's well deserving of *****.

Couldn't watch the movie because the region code was not for Canada. It never mentioned this when I ordered it. Kind of a let down.
