Directions
Transitioning your cat: While some cats can switch from one litter type to another easily, your cat may require a transition. If so, you should follow this simple transition schedule: Week One (en) Mix 1/3 Yesterday's News with 2/3 your current litter. Week Two (en) Mix 2/3 Yesterday's News with 1/3 current litter. Week Three (en) 100% Yesterday's News. Directions: Use a moisture-proof cat box large enough to comfortably accommodate your cat(s). Maintain cat box filler at a depth of 2-3 inches for pawing and covering. We recommend removing waste areas daily. Clean the cat box with warm water and a mild detergent between litter changes. Store in dry place.

Now the smell it creates is another issue. It does not naturalize odors...at all. You'll need to try and scoop daily (which is quite hard to do), or change totally every couple of days. I just put less in her pan to extend the amount used. It absorbs pretty well and the scent (before she's used it) is faintly of newspapers.
This is priced cheaper than what you'd get at Petco, so I guess that's a plus.

I probably should have read more reviews, but I thought, "Hey, it's cat litter. I'm throwing it out bit by bit anyway. How bad could it be?"
Welp, it's not BAD. It's annoying as all get-out, and I was wrong. After rescuing a kitten, and deciding to keep him inside the house so he would be safe and away from cars, wild forest beasts, and those feral cats out there, I knew I'd have to be scooping the poop. We're not rich folks, so we can't afford to dump an entire tray of litter every day.
Daily, I scoop out the pee and poop clumps into a little plastic grocery bag, tie a knot in it, and throw it away. I use my litter scooper shovel and shake it a bit to let the unclumped litter fall back into the litter pan. Even with the so-called "99% dust free litter" there's still some dust. But ya deal, right?
I knew the Purina Yesterday's News Unscented Paper Cat Litter came in these compressed pellets. I did look at the pictures included in the description. It’s similar to compressed pellet rabbit food. It never occurred to me the pellets would be so large they wouldn't easily fall through the slots on my litter scooper. The cat didn't seem real impressed with the shape of the stuff either, but he DID keep using the litter box. (Thank goodness!) I think that had more to do with the fact I had both his regular litter and the new pelletized paper litter in the litter box.
I think he was trying to cover the paper pellets up with the granular clay litter.
When it came time to scoop, I'd have to shake and shake and shake the litter scoop and it took FOREVER for those pellets to fall through the slots. All that shaking stirs up dust. And the little crumbly bits you get that are pee-soaked would fall through. There I was, scooping and scooping and scooping to catch them all.
I was perturbed, to say the least. I tried to think of a way to make the paper pellets more user friendly. Breaking them into smaller bits would help, but I didn't want to kneel there and pound away at the stuff, and I sure as heck didn't want to take the clean litter from the bag and run it though my blender! I considered beating on the stuff with a hammer, but that would break the poop pan. Taking it all out to the garage to dump it out, smash it, sweep it up back into the bag, and haul it back into the house just seemed like too much effort. Besides, those pellets are hard. They are not soft like it says in the description. It would take some muscle to crush the big pellets into little pellets. Why work so hard for cat litter when I can buy stuff (and have it delivered to my door) and have it behave as expected?
Poop scooping is a not-so-pleasant job and this pelletized paper litter was making it even more unpleasant, making it take even longer, and stirring up more dust.
And unlike the description, the stuff does track a bit out of the litter box, so instead of just granules on the litter mat and floor, there are these much larger (up to an inch long) pellets scattered about with the granular litter.
Because I paid money for the stuff, I'll use it up, mixing it with the usual clay litter (and even the corn litter because I'll buy some of that when the price goes down a little), but most of the paper litter gets tossed in the trash bag with the poop. It was a waste of money.
I do appreciate that it doesn't have an overwhelming perfumy-odor. The bag it came in was sturdy enough. It does absorb the pee, but my cat Pepper doesn't seem to be pleased, and I know I don't like the extra time and work involved in cleaning out the litter box. I cannot recommend the stuff.
Like I said great idea in theory. Crappy idea in practice.
Backstory: Our family has 3 cats, which is for us one cat to many. Unfortunately the 2 males cats team up and bully the one female cat and we've tried many of the ideas from "My Cat From Hell" TV show, but in the end our one female kitty is most happy living in her own cat "suite" in our bedroom/private bath.
Since her litter box is now in our bathroom I needed a cat litter that would not stick to the floor of a wet bathroom when she accidentally sends litter flying from the box. Let me tell you, the clumping litter is a nightmare to scrape off the floor of a wet bathroom floor. I looked into those expensive litter box systems that attach to your toilet, but after reading some reviews about the smell of baked cat poop permeating through the home.. yeah I knew that was out of the question.
So after a lot of trial and error we ended up trying yesterdays news. We have not changed litter since we started this litter. It's perfect for our situation and our kitty.
1. It does not clump- this is a must-have for any litter box in a bathroom
2. It traps odors! Yay! No baked cat poop smell
3. It's clean and made of recycled newspaper
I used to buy this litter at our local grocery store, but I've found its cheaper and more convenient to buy through amazon. Hope this was helpful to anyone looking to try this litter for your kitty.

- Virtually dust-free
- Does not track through the house
Negatives:
- Does not fall through a litter scoop so that removing feces is very slow and tedious unless you want to throw out half the litter as well
- Large pieces get kicked out of the litter box and travel much farther than clumping litter particles
- The bag it comes in is rather flimsy; a separate storage bin is best
- The cats think it's weird!
Conclusion:
I'm going back to using clumping litter, dust and all. With 6 cats and 3 large litter boxes that need to be cleaned at least once a day this just isn't the right product for me.

This litter is perfect for us. I flush poo as soon as I know it's there and scoop pee every couple days. If that's your style this is the litter for you. It's also soooo much better to use for longhairs.
Here's the story:
When my cat was a kitten I had to keep her just in my bedroom, meaning the litter box wasn't far from my bed or where I kept my clothes. This was my go to.
I have a very sensitive sense of smell, so controlling odour was an absolute must. Everything has a smell.
You know that kinda dusty smelling litter scent? It gets in the air and sticks to textiles when you pour litter to fill the kitty box. Even perfectly clean unused clay litters have it. It always smells dirty. A problem with 'odour-absorbing' clumping litter is that small particles means more surface area, and (since the pieces that absorb just the vapour or whatever don't clump) even if they 'catch' the odour that would have lingered immediately after your cat pees, it will release some of it back into the air the next time your cat digs around.
Yesterday's News litter just smells like the morning newspaper. Ink and paper pulp.
I think it might just be that people with an especially acute sense of smell start associating the neutral scent of just regular litter with the unpleasant smell of cat urine/feces. The point is, if you use clumping litter, no matter how clean you keep it, there may be a litter box smell on you that is detectable to a super smeller, whereas the same person might just think you read the newspaper if they can smell anything at all.
You do have to understand the differences between clumping and non clumping litter. If you like to change the box and forget about it for a week this will not work for you. Non clumping is higher maintenance but it's worth it. You will need baking soda with this, but you don't need a litter mat. The odd pellet will escape the box but this isn't something that can be tracked around.
Clean kitties prefer it. When my cat uses clumping litter she shakes her paws and grooms herself frantically every time she goes to the bathroom. No such behaviour with 'Yesterday's News'. Using the litter box isn't unpleasant for her when it's filled with this stuff.
I am housebound by chronic illness so the delivery right to my door is especially appreciated.
I think it would work a lot better and save litter according to the previous commentor's suggestion. I'm going to try and make my own cat litter sift. Think I'll stick to this cat litter for a looong time. :)
My wife and I recently got two new kittens, and this was the litter they had become used to at the breeders, so it was the litter we started using.
With our previous cat (who passed away about a year ago) I had been used to Silica Gel Crystals. The crystals were great in terms of convenience as they didn't require the liquid to be removed (it is absorbed by the silica) and the solid has the moisture quickly absorbed by the silica meaning little smell and little to dispose of. The crystals rarely smelt unless it was time to change them. However I recently discovered that the crystals are dangerous if ingested (something a kitten is likely to do) and the dust is carcinogenic to both cats and humans! So whilst it is amazing stuff I'm not going back to it.
So back to Yesterdays News. I was initially unimpressed. There was a definite urine smell most of the time for the first couple of weeks of use, and I seemed to be getting through a lot of this stuff. Not what you want on any front. However I persevered and I've come round a lot. I still don't think it's the best stuff in the world, but it's good once you know how to manage it.
A learning curve:
I did a bit of research into litter box management. My old ways evidently weren't working with this stuff, but the breeder loved it. I watched a lot of Jackson Galaxy (the guy from My Cat From Hell US TV series) videos and read some of his stuff. He certainly seems to know what he's talking about. My biggest epiphany was the fact that he said he didn't do a proper clean of a litter box more than once every 6 weeks or so. I'd been changing the whole thing every week due to the smell. Changing this one thing meant I wasn't chucking most of a box of good pellets in the bin. It therefore means I don't mind scooping out the wet stuff more rigorously. I'm going through less litter (still quite a lot, but less than before) and the smell is better. You really do need to get rid of all the wet pellets to keep the smell under control.
The Pros:
1. The main pro is that it's natural and not doing any harm to the environment, my cats or myself.
2. It's easy to use. You can see what's wet and what's not and it scoops out easily.
3. The cats like it. It's gentle on the paws and they seems to like digging in it.
4. It doesn't track particularly badly. It does end up outside the box, and the open box we have (we have two) does tend to get it flung quite far during the enthusiastic digging, but it's simple to sweep up and pop back in the box.
5. You can compost the whole lot, urine, solid waste and pellets if you have a hot composter. It's something I'm looking into as cat litter is by far our largest contributor to non-recyclable waste.
6. It's apparently good for cats with allergies or problems with dust. This produces little, but it does break down and become a bit dusty after a while, but I just scoop that out.
Cons:
1. It is a bit smellier than other cat litters can be. The solid waste smells for longer than the crystals we used to use. One of our kittens buries his waste well, and the other doesn't. If it's buried then it doesn't smell too bad. If it's not then there is quite a stench for quite some time.
2. You do use a lot and it's not the cheapest.
3. The learning curve I had.
4. The liquid waste doesn't clump the litter making it a bit harder to remove, but it's something you'll get used to.
Overall I've got to a point where I like this cat litter. I'm not a complete convert and I may still look for alternatives, but it's certainly good stuff. I think if you're after an eco-friendly cat litter this may well be the best out there, but like most eco products you do have to pay for it.
Yesterdays News Unscented Cat Litter, 13.6 Kg/ Sold by: Amazon EU S.a.r.L./ £15.79 in May to £23 in August CRICKEY!!! I would recommend moving onwards to Breeders Celect which is almost the same product and is very good too and costs only £13, almost half the new price of Yesterdays News.... Amazon - explanation of why massive price increase would be appreicated
Great, does what it says on the bag, no smells at all. I empty out poops straight way, urine can be difficult to spot at first but you soon find it's is a little darker and then can scoop it out. I do full change of box every 3-4 days and keep cleaning in-between, the longer you leave the litter in the box the more change of tracking you will see as it's paper it breaks down when wet. Some people have said they flush down the toilet but I would not recommend as believe eventually you will end up with blocked pipes. I wouldn't use any other type of litter, may be slightly more expensive but you use less and have no pong at all!
It seems hard and I worried initially that my cat wouldn't like it, but she has no problems with it at all.
I recommend removing solid waste immediately, and liquid waste every day or two. That way there's no build up of smell, and you can go quite a long time before needing to clean the entire tray out. This is with just the one cat - if you have more using the same tray you might need to remove waste more frequently.
I actually prefer Fresh News to this, because it's lighter in colour (easier to see where it's soaked) and has better odour control, but I have some of this as a backup and wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.
