Although many reviewers noted light that was too dim, I did not experience this problem. Maybe I had different expectations, or maybe others received a defective product. You should understand that a USB-powered single LED light is not expected to be as bright as a flashlight. And why would you want it to be? This light provides enough ambient light for those occasions when you need to look at the keys, and it does so without asking for much of your limited battery life. One LED should not have a noticeable impact your battery life. In a dark room, this light provides sufficient light to see the keys. The adjustable arm is sturdy and holds an elevated position above the keyboard. My guess is that anyone who complained about the brightness or small light footprint simply did not elevate the light high enough above the keys. You will need to find the spot that works best for you.
Since I often use my MacBook Air at night in the dark (1st generation WITHOUT the fantastic back-lit keys), this device is useful. Once you consider the free shipping and the under-$3 cost, I can't imagine why anyone would complain (again, unless their product was faulty).
I left the light run for a few hours, and it was not hot.
Initially, the Amazon email traffic indicated that this light would arrive more than one month after it shipped, so I was pleasantly surprised when it showed up (direct from China) in about 10 days.
If you have a laptop without a backlit keyboard, this is a great addition to your laptop bag. I use it when working on my laptop in a dark room or in a vehicle while on the road. The bendable neck stays in the shape for extended periods of time. It is durable and very handy. I have had it for years and used it sporadically, but it is still running great.
For the price, you just cannot beat it. However, the LED barely lights about half of the keyboard, and the flexible neck is too loose and thus you need to be careful not to bump it when in use to avoid the light from tipping back onto the screen or forward onto you hands while typing. It definitely helps to shed some light on your keyboard in dim light conditions, and does stay cool to the touch.
-- In the end I need to mention that although this is a low cost item, in turn it is still not worth the consideration. After all was said and done, the flex neck on this unit is way too flimsy, and I found the base where the USB attaches to the flex neck was not able to support the weight of the product. The unit did indeed fail at that weak point, exposing the wires, and then snapping them. I am currently in the process of replacing this unit - DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!
I am a software engineer that works at home. In the warmer months I work on my back porch, and needed a light that would allow me to see my keyboard in the evening hours. This light is perfect for that job. I have a Dell Latitude D830 laptop with USB ports on the right side and on the back. This light can plug into any of my USB ports and is just the right brightness to light the entire keyboard. The light is very sturdy with a flexible chrome plated steel cable. The USB connector extends approximately two inches from my USB ports. The light is a bright white LED that emits no heat, so you do not have to worry about being burned by the light. It does not have an on/off button, but then for the price this light is a real bargain.
The light is small and shipped to you in an envelope. All that is necessary for operation is to plug it in a USB port. The bulb cannot be replaced and it does not have an ON - OFF switch so you are compelled to plug it in and out each and every time you use it. The flexible portion of the light is 14.5 inches long and it does light up a sufficient working area on my laptop keyboard. Overall, it's not bad.
POOR QUALTY! POOR SERVICE! I sent email to seller and got nothing but double talk!! They tried to hold me hostage for a refund ONLY IF I REMOVED MY COMMENTS!! I had to get Amazon involved A-Z program to get it settled... We bought two of these cheap lights, one flickered and worked about an hour, the second was bright and only worked one half hour!! They get extremely hot at the light end AND at the USB plug!! I have since read they will also ruin your USB port!!
I recommend NOT to purchase these lights and NOT to business with this company!
I ordered two of these. They arrived in less time that promised though they gave a delivery date one month out from order date. One of them worked for about 2 to 3 hours and just quit working. The other worked a couple days before it died. I submitted a return request via Amazon and the seller emailed me within 24 hours asking for a photo of the products as well as the original mailing container. (good thing I hadn't thrown in in the recycle bin yet!) Since I emailed them the photo with an explanation of the problem I have not heard from them!
The concept of the lights is great, but the USB ports fit loosely in the laptops and are easy to bump. Considering the customer service level I would not purchase from them again.
I'm stunned that this item received such a high score(reason why I purchased it)! I plugged the light in and it slowly fell to one side! Each time I did this it happened! I will try to figure out a way to use this the way it was meant to be used, but I suggest for those of you thinking about buying it REMEMBER you get what you pay for CHEAP PRICE = CHEAP PRODUCT!
PS I'm mad at myself for getting this piece of .... as I knew better!
