Product Description
The D-Day invasion - the largest military operation of World War II and the beginning of the end - marked Dwight Ike Eisenhower as one of America's most powerful military leaders. IKE: COUNTDOWN TOD-DAY follows the 90 terrifying days leading up to the invasion as Eisenhower decides the fates of thousands.
Amazon.com
Tom Selleck gives a restrained yet powerful performance as General Dwight D. Eisenhower in Ike: Countdown to D-Day. This made-for-cable feature focuses on the solemn, brilliant but plain-speaking Ike as he fine-tunes, over 90 days, tactical and political concerns involved with the Allies' imminent D-Day invasion of Normandy, i.e., America and Britain's long-awaited joint assault against Nazi-occupied Europe. A strong cast--James Remar as General Omar Bradley, Timothy Bottoms as Ike's assistant, Walter Bedell "Beetle" Smith--anchors the film's mesmerizing, blow-by-blow account of Eisenhower's leadership under the shadow of many uncertainties (predicting the weather for D-Day becomes a suspenseful refrain) and pressure from conflicting egos (Montgomery, DeGaulle, Patton). Ian Mune is a delight as a wary, darkly bemused Churchill, who encourages Ike's strategy of supreme leadership and low-key diplomacy. The script by Lionel Chetwynd (DC 9/11: Time of Crisis) captures the unbearable tension of commencing the invasion--and awaiting the results. --Tom Keogh

- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2023A different time and place. Americans, more or less united, in a common purpose, engaged in focused work, to defeat the terrible evils of Nazism. Stalin had long called for America to help the beleaguered Russian troops on the Eastern Front: an invasion of France to secure a solid two front war against Germany. Hitler was certain the invasion would come along the shortest path over water, at Calais. Eisenhower would help in that belief, sending Patton to head a paper-mâché army at Maidenhead, just across the Channel from Calais. As is well-known, Eisenhower chose the longer passage to land on the beaches of Normandy. The critical day, June 6, was decided only a few hours before, with the always variable weather being the key determinant.
Normandy has been a part of my life. For six days, in July,1989, I camped at Carentan, and the “variable weather” was idyllic. The allies should have been so lucky. After my first visit, I returned several more times, for walks among the white crosses on the bluff above Omaha Beach, one corner of a foreign field that will be forever American. The most impressive movie of the actual invasion is at the museum at Caen, a first-day British objective, 12 kms inland, that took 30 days and Caen’s almost total destruction to secure. So much for Monty’s quick dash to Berlin.
Robert Harmon, this film’s director, proved that there is still much more to learn about this truly historic event. The movie was released in 2004. It is about egos and politics and power bases. In a key scene between Churchill and Eisenhower, the former says to the latter: “No man in history has ever held the power that you ask… not Caesar, not Alexander.” Eisenhower would be appointed “Supreme Commander” even though he lacked actual combat experience. The top British general, Field Marshal Montgomery, would nibble at his authority. Tom Selleck plays Eisenhower. I have a soft spot in my heart for Timothy Bottoms, who played excellent roles of youth in “The Last Picture Show” and “Johnny Got his Gun.” In “Ike…,” Bottoms plays a much more mature Walter Bedell Smith, Eisenhower’s aide, and sometimes foil.
I liked the scene in which Eisenhower reamed Patton a new one and threatened to send him home for once again opening his big mouth and talking about how the world would be ruled by “Anglo Saxons” after the war. Eisenhower asked Patton how Joe Stalin might feel about such sentiments.
One issue that was not treated in depth was the sheer monumental task of the logistics. How do you get all the right fuel, bullets and chow to the right places at the right time, pre-Internet, where all was handled on paper and mammoth chalkboards?
A major issue that was well covered involved the placement of the airborne units, specifically the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions, about 13,000 men. If they dropped further inland, the casualties would be less, but they would not have been as effective pressing the Germans from the rear, helping to take some of the pressure off the troops landing on the beaches. Allied experience at Gallipoli (WW I) and Anzio (WW II) haunted the decisionmaking. Fearful that the allied soldiers might be pushed back into the sea (and indeed, it was touch and go with the First Infantry Division), Eisenhower made the very difficult decision to have them land “tight” against the German units, knowing the projected casualties might be 70%. The movie shows his immense relief to hear that the casualties were “only” 20%.
“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers” from Shakespeare’s “Henry V” was worked into the movie as well. The Normandy invasion remains an outstanding American (and Allied) achievement, of focus and common purpose, that is so lacking today. 5-stars.

This entertaining film describes the contribution Eisenhower made to his country with D-Day, something many Americans (including myself) were unaware of. However, each of us should know what he did...and not only what he did, but what each Allied soldier did in giving their lives for us. I WISH that when I had been a high school or college student films like this had been available---accurate to history, but moving too. I cried through many places as I realized the sacrifices so many have made to preserve our freedoms.
Tom Selleck is exemplary---fabulous---as Eisenhower. He says that he plays Eisenhower as "truly an ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances". Would that men like Eisenhower were alive today---I would hope this, wish this, but I doubt it. Tom Selleck's acting is stunning and the directing is equally impressive. This is a great movie!
This film makes history come alive in a vibrant way. If you are intersted in leadership, or history, or value your freedom, or want to be more grateful for your life...you will enjoy this film. If you simply wish to appreciate the sacrifices others made for you, you will also enjoy this film. If you want to understand the responsibilities and sacrifices of courageous leadership, this film will be of great benefit. If you have teenagers, get them to watch this. Upcoming generations who have no concept of what has been done for them will certainly benefit and even enjoy this movie. It truly does pay homage to "Our Greatest Generation"; now I truly understand why.
There is no violence or profanity. This is a movie suitable for children, especially children familiar with this historical period. There are no battle scenes. This is a film about leadership, courage, strength, sacrifice, moral values, confidence, and the humanness of the military.
If you are a Democrat, as I am, it will help you to understand war more in this context, as difficult as war is. This movie did this for me.
The special features are valuable, also; I will rewatch this movie again and again...it has spurred me on to read more about this time period in history...it is one of the few movies I will rewatch with the special features voiceover.
I would rate this movie 10 stars on Amazon if it were possible. I know that this is a rave review, but this is a film that exceeds the rave. See this film. You will fall asleep after watching it being able to put your problems into perspective when you see and understand what others before you dealt with at this time in history; it's worth it.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2024It was very informative about people and events of D-Day. It also presented information about Eisenhower’s ability to handle tough situations and the people involved in them.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2024One of the best war time drama movies ever made.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2021A well-done docudrama about a leader who had to steer strong differing personalities (Churchill, Montgomery, Spaatz, Harris, Patton, Leigh-Mallory, DeGaulle, Bradley) with their own views of how the WWII invasion of Europe should proceed, towards the singular D-Day mission with which several disagreed.
Ike Eisenhower had both wisdom and a strength of character that few leaders have today. Ready to take sole blame if D-Day failed, Selleck does a terrific job portraying Ike as the Supreme Commander over other generals, several who thought they should have his job, and whose military skills were only exceeded by their pomposity. He understood that for the D-Day venture to work, that while he was clearly in command, he would have to let his field generals get the newspaper ink, while he owned the behind-the-scenes pressure of making consequential decisions affecting millions of lives, putting personal friendship and goals aside for the sake of the mission.
The entire cast is excellent, with a script that brings out the tension of Ike’s situation and his unique qualities for successfully handling it. Ike was one of those singular leaders who could not have been replaced by anyone but General Marshall, who FDR needed in Washington to keep things militarily in place there.

I have wanted this film ever since l saw it on television several years ago. The acting was brilliant, Tom Selleck was so good as Ike, you didn't notice that he didn't look remotely like him. My viewing, after the football, tonight.

Tom Selleck shows his great range in this. A foreshadowing of his strong role in Blue Bloods.

A most enjoyable film of General Eisenhower as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces, the personalities he dealt with, and the decisions he made in the lead-up to the massive invasion of Europe. Excellent performance by each cast member. A lasting tribute to Dwight D. Eisenhower..
