This product works very well

I've been using a Linksys NSLU2 for more than a year. The concept is great, but I've had a lot of problems with it. Specifically, when I copy files after a time it becomes inaccessible and I have to start again. Plus lately it would not connect to the network at all.

The Buffalo linkstation on the other hand has worked perfectly for about 6 weeks. I had it setup in about 30 minutes and it performs much faster than the Linksys unit without any errors. I've been burning DVD's directly from the Linkstation to the disk without any problems at all.I can copy 1 Gb from the Linkstation to my laptop in about 5 minutes.

I strongly recommend this product.

Pretty good, but a little disappointing.

I bought this 6 weeks ago to serve as an MP3 fileserver for my 2 Squeezeboxes so I wouldn't have to keep my PC running all of the time. The main draw was that it would use little power and be quiet.

Up until now, it has been both of those things. Unfortunately, it has gotten a lot noisier lately - buzzy. I did some searches on LinkStation Wiki forums and it turns out this is a common problem, whose source is either a cheap fan and mounts or a cheap back panel that vibrates or both. I have an email in to BuffTech, but it seems like unhelpful tech support is another common complaint.

3 stars because it does function well, is very flexible with all of the geek tweaks out there (as long as you're willing to invest some time) and it doesn't seem like it has any real competition. Too bad it doesn't deliver on the quiet part.

Network hardrive

Very happy with the purchase - would purchase the same thing again.

Very easy to set up. Had it up and running within 15 minutes. Works on a Mac and PC network without any problems. Get a battery backup for the drive - if the power goes out for even a moment, it shuts off and then you have to turn it back on (I have mine in the basement).

I haven't tried to use the USB ports to add additional drives or a printer (I haven't needed to do either).

Short File Names and Poor technical support

I bought this product to provide shared storage and backup for my mixed network (wife and I have Macs, kids have a PC).

The installation program looked like a PC only application. The unit installed easily and quickly from the kids PC.

By default the device comes with two folders. One is called share and is a shared Mac/PC folder, the other is called share-mac and is Mac only. I could only see the share folder, not share-mac. I tried calling tech support twice and held for over a half hour each time before giving up. The second time I left a message - they promise a call back within an hour. I still have not received a call back in over 3 hours.

I tried to back up my Documents folder to the device. Not only does it not support file names longer than 32 characters (which a couple of the reviews have noted), but when it gets to one, it gives an error message and just stops. How totaly useless.

Can't the error message give an option of skipping the file, renaming the file, or something other than just stopping and starting over from the begining?

Overall it seems to be a step-up form the HD-H160LAN that it is replacing. Things seem more generic and less prorietary. The setup is easy and the unit performs well. One of my favorite features is the self-backup, at a defined interval. As a network device it is easily seen by all the computers on my home network.

REALLY easy to use

I have a 3 year old PC and was desperate for space. My boss saw this in a store and recommended it to me. This is a beauty! Setup was very easy, as was mapping the drive and transfering data. Printing from a networked laptop is very convenient.

I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 for 2 reasons:

1. While Buffalo has 24/7 tech support, I spent over an hour on hold waiting for support at 7am on a Sunday morning. I ended up haging up and sending email instead, which was answered within 24 hours.

2. The fan runs all the time. Even a computer fan goes to sleep when the drive does. Beware: If you shut off the buffalo to save on your electricity bill, you'll have to remap the network drive.

Excellent device

Set up went smoothly and fast, no issues whatsoever with the function of the unit. Two small complaints, one is the noise generated by the fan - too loud in my opinion. I have it located in my basement so no big deal but if it was on my desk I would be going carzy. Also the face of the unit keeps palling off. It is just a thin facia made of plastic and the glue doesn't hold it well. Again, no biggie but it is a problem. I have been using the device for a couple of months now with no issues ever.
