Counterfeit product - find a reputable legit pen dealer instead of going through Amazon.

I purchased this pen from Amazon. This is the Amazon's choice listing for 'Lamy' and the order was fulfilled by Amazon (seller on order listed as 'Amazon.com Services, Inc.') This Lamy Safari is COUNTERFEIT. DO NOT BUY LAMY PENS (or possibly other pens) FROM AMAZON.

I had no experience with fountain pens so to me this Lamy Safari Charcoal wrote great and was fun to use. However, I had some suspicions after seeing warnings of Amazon counterfeits (google counterfeit Safaris for some good side by side comparisons). I confirmed with a local legit dealer (Crazy Alan's Emporium, Chapel Hill NC). Though this was a pretty good counterfeit and didn't show many of the signs observed in some other online examples, there were some major red flags:
1) LAMY PENS ARE TYPICALLY SOLD WITH BLUE INK NOT BLACK. Ink color was the first question I was asked in store.
2) The box was somewhat flimsy and the logo was slightly blurred. The letter A was the biggest giveaway in comparison - the fake box has a smaller 'hole' in the capital letter A (the store gave me one of their extra boxes for comparison; top box in picture is real, bottom is the counterfeit packaging). The real box was also stiffer. While both boxes had the same slightly ridged texture, the real box was sturdier and just felt more substantial.
3) The nib would spill ink a bit if I turned it upside down. This nib was decent enough that we both questioned whether it might be a real Lamy nib on a counterfeit pen though.
4) When the cap was closed on the counterfeit pen, it was looser (cap could easily be rotated while on the pen) than on the real pen.
5) ***Once I had a real Lamy Safari in hand, I could also see that the real Safari Charcoal wrote much smoother, was less scratchy, and was just slightly more weighty in the hand. This made a huge difference in my overall enjoyment of writing with the pen.***

I ended up purchasing a Lamy AL-star for $30 instead from the store (the Lamy Safari was cheaper and close to the cost of the counterfeit Amazon pen). It was worth the peace of mind and the improvement of quality to know I had not been ripped off. The real Safari doesn't really cost much more than the counterfeits listed here! I'm still within the return window so am returning to Amazon.

Even if the product is 'Amazon's choice', fulfilled by Amazon, and sold directly through Amazon, this is no guarantee that you are getting a real product. Be careful!

Safe Buy and Truly Pleasurable Writing Experience

I've had much costlier pens, none of them compare to this. This pen is butter smooth and very reliable. It never leaks, and in this charcoal black it looks absolutely stunning. Did I mention that it absolutely glides over paper? I really can't say enough how remarkable this pen is. But maybe these attached pictures will help a bit. At this price point you aren't really concerned if you lose it (except perhaps you are so finicky that you worry about losing so fine a nib). I don't see the point of ever buying a pricier pen. This pen is everything. But (and this is truly a ridiculous "but") if I had one gripe it would have to be weight. The pen is light and sturdy. A workhorse for daily use, not a thing of art (though, golly, it is beautiful). As I said, this "but" is a stretch -- this is an excellent pen.

Caveat: I have owned costlier pens, though not as costly as the eye-popping numbers one sees sometimes for fountain pens. Some may reasonably argue that I have not covered the range, and so I cannot really 'benchmark' the performance of this pen relative to more expensive ones. True, but, on an absolute basis, this is an exceptional pen. Don't buy a costlier pen if you haven't tried this first to know what a great writing instrument feels like.

I was hoping for something finer

For at least a couple years I've been using a cheap Yafa fountain pen I bought at Office Depot for work purposes and while it wrote well, I didn't feel any real quality behind it (I've dropped the pen and broke the "resin" barrel). Even though most of the Safari is made from ABS plastic, which makes the pen light, nothing happened when I dropped it once onto tile flooring.

The cap is made of the same ABS plastic with a metal clip, which is stiff enough to stay clipped but flexible enough to be clipped. It is also the heaviest part of the entire pen, so when you cap the pen and set it down, it won't roll past the clip (I think I had the Yafa roll away on me a couple times); I usually just set the pen down on the clip itself just because I can :P

What I really like is the two bevels in the grip section of the pen; it makes it easy to orient the pen without actually having to look at it (as opposed to having three bevels in other pens I've used) and makes it easy to re-grip the pen after loosely holding it to punch numbers into a hand-held calculator. Even though the grip section is plastic, it's actually quite comfortable surprisingly.

Even though the Yafa was doing the trick, I wanted something that wrote a bit finer. After watching the video review that compares the Lamy fine to a ballpoint pen, I thought it was what I was looking for, but it wasn't. It was actually the same width as the Yafa. I decided to keep it and use it some before moving to Lamy's extra fine.

I posted an image that compares the Lamy fine, extra fine, and .5mm mechanical pencil, just in case anyone was in between the fine and extra fine (I was one of them).

Despite disliking the line thickness, the Safari writes quite smoothly to my liking.

I had some empty Waterman cartridge laying around and I was originally hoping they would fit, since that's what I used in the Yafa, but to my dismay, they don't fit. I've used the Safari fine for a couple weeks and it's drained a bit less than half the supplied cartridge. I'm hoping the ink use with the extra fine is reduced.

I ended up buying the Safari extra fine before I learned I could have just bought a nib and swapped it. Oops XD
