There's no such thing as a bad song as long as it's sung by the late Ray Charles, and Live at the Jubilee Auditorium Canada offers yet more irrefutable evidence of that. This concert, recorded in 1981, has its flaws; it's brief (48 minutes, no bonus features), and hearing Charles with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in a big, formal venue with a rather listless audience isn't exactly ideal. But Charles, the man who's rightly credited with "inventing" soul music, always had an inimitable way with a song. On the one hand, he transforms a relatively unfamiliar choice, Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Oh What a Beautiful Morning," from a gentle waltz into a rousing, funky romp ("Some Enchanted Evening," another tune by that team, is marred by an awful disco beat). On the other hand, even if he performed "Georgia on My Mind," "Hit the Road Jack," "What'd I Say," and "I Can't Stop Loving You" literally thousands of times, the man was incapable of merely going through the motions. He adds little vocal inflections and filigree that help make the hoariest of standards sound fresh--check out "What'd I Say," where a long, funny intro (Ray yodels!) blossoms into a cooking version of the tune. This may not be Ray Charles's greatest performance, but hey, any Ray is good Ray. --Sam Graham

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2023I purchased this DVD because I am a huge fan of Ray Charles and his music. The video is not 4K since this technology was not available at the time of production. However, I am just happy to hear his voice and see him as he was. I thoroughly enjoyed watching his concert and will continue to into the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2012Ray Charles is one of those entertainers that you simply can't get enough of.
He was so supremely talented, and so innovative, and yet seemed to speak to the inner psyche of almost everybody, that no matter how many times you see or hear him, it's never too much.
The only criticism I have of him is that he got almost too far out, in the way of ultra-hipness, instead of just singing the songs in the basic, fantastic way he first recorded them - such as "What'd I say," or "Georgia."
I'm sure that singers get tired of singing their material the same old way, over and over, but after all, that's what the people want to hear - not some far-out version that bears little resemblance to what is familiar to them.
But this is great - and the Raelettes are great, too.
The whole thing is wonderful.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2008Ray Charles "Live with the Edmonton Symphony" is a terrific hour of music with the inimitable Ray. The orchestra sounds fantastic (who is that lead trumpet player??. Holy smokes!) and Ray performs like he was having a ball. It is fun to watch him and his back up ensemble perform, and great music was made that night. I have lent this out to many people and all have enjoyed this concert. Most have picked up a copy. I finally got my copy back, and I will enjoy watching this again. Hard to find used, but if you can locate one snap it up quickly for your library. You too will become a fan of Ray Charles.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2014I have been a Ray Charles fan for almost sixty years and have almost all of his recordings. I enjoyed this DVD very much and would highly recommend this seller.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2016, I love Ray Charles he is the best ! I love watching this concert !
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2017Let me begin by saying that I love Ray Charles, and am very pleased with my recent purchase of Ray Charles in Rio, from 1963, BUT, this 1981 concert is not up to his genius-level. For starters, there are only 12 songs performed, apparently aimed at a single LP release. Next, even though he performed three of his signature songs flawlessly, especially with the Edmonton Symphony behind him, Georgia On My Mind, America the Beautiful, and Take These Chains From My Heart, he is not up to par on Busted. He ad-libs over the top on Hit The Road Jack, and What'd I say is unrecognizable. Then, he performs 2 selections(out of the 12), from the Broadway musicals Oklahoma, and South Pacific, but does NOT perform I Got A Woman, the Mess Around, Nighttime Is The Right Time, Crying Time, nor one of his very best, Unchain My Heart. I was disappointed, and from the look of his audience, they were too. The only saving grace is that I bought this copy for just over $5.00, including shipping, so it is a keeper.
