Great for Medical Marijuana ...oh yeah, and other stuff too

Yup, I know, this wasn't made for medical marijuana ...or was it? But if you wanna chop vegetables, keep in mind this is the "Mini" version, so it's rather small; not much bigger than a salt shaker. Which might be perfect if you don't eat much and only prepare food for one. Either way, this standard OXO Good Grips Chopper would be better suited for food prep. This Mini version seems better suited for specialty chopping, whatever that may be. Here's what I like using it with:

> Nuts

Drop in a pawful, then smack the living daylights outta this thing, and voila, instant ice cream topping -- yum!

> Breath Mints

Yup, that's what I said. I take a lot of Rx meds that mess with my stomach, so I have a bit of an addiction to antacids and mints. So much so, that I worry about my teeth. Sometimes I like to drop in a few BreathSavers 3 Hour Mints into this mini chopper and take a big pulverized hit of freshness. Intense. Go ahead, I dare ya.

> Medical Marijuana

Get over it people. It's an herb, created by nature like any other; cultivated and consumed for many uses by our forefathers. Yup, I have a prescription from a real doctor and use it to aid a legit medical disability. But I'm not here to debate any of that. The fact of the matter is, this Oxo Mini Chopper works perfectly for cannabis. I considered this Electric Tobacco Shredder , but the blades look dangerous, and 'Shredding' herbs isn't exactly ideal. I do have a Cali Crusher 4 piece herb grinder , but it's rather small, and hard to use for those of us who have arthritis or problems with their hands. So I upgraded to a Sharpstone Hand Crank Herb Grinder , and really liked it for awhile. But the crank handle always came loose and just spun round and round, making it useless. I tightened the screw so many times, that I stripped it and had to use crazy glue, until it finally broke for good. That's when I tried this bargain brand grinder , but the blades snapped right off the first time I used it.

*Sigh* How hard could it be to find a decent herb grinder? So it finally dawns on me to check the Kitchen & Dining department, and voila!

Enter the OXO Mini Chopper

The operative words here being 'chopper' and 'mini.' Standard food choppers like this are just far too large for my purposes. But this mini is absolutely perfect. Just drop in a small amount of herb, smack the top of this thing a few times and you got perfectly chopped herb every time.

Grinding vs Chopping

Grinders pulverize herb into tiny bits that often get sucked into your mouth and are just messy to deal with. Chopped herbs, on the other hand, are fluffy, light and very easy to handle. The fluffy little pieces are a dream to work with compared to the pulverized bits grinders produce.

Retractable Blades

Grinder blades get stuck with herbs and you can go bonkers trying to clear them out. This chopper, however, has retractable blades that naturally push loose herbs off the blades and into the collection cup. There's also a little plastic tab that automatically scrapes the sides of the collection cup, so all the herb drops to the bottom of the cup where it's easier to grab and use.

Collection Cup

It's big enough to stick your fingers in and grab the herbs you need. It's clear, so you can see everything that's happening. It even comes with an airtight lid for storage. I have big fingers, so the large opening helps me not make a mess all over the table when trying to load a pinch of herb. The cup is also pretty deep, which helps keep things neat and tidy; just load your delivery device over the collection cup so any excess drops back in; no fuss no muss.

Sturdy

This thing is pretty solidly built, which is a good thing, since you gotta smack the daylights outta it to chop. But it seems built to last.

Rubbery Top

Feels neat. And just give it a twist to lock the spring loaded knob down for compact storage.

Great For Venting Frustration

Ticked off at someone? Just imagine you're giving them a good smack on the head every time you swat this thing. You'll have nicely chopped herbs and feel better too. *Deep inhale, and relax* Ahhh, centered and at one with the universe, once again. How Zen.

Approx 5.5" x 2.5" and shrinks down to 4.5" when the spring loaded knob is locked down into place.

Bottom Line - whatever your need, this is a great little mini chopper. It's well built, compact, and does a great job for my purposes; be it nuts, breath mints or cannabis. Cheap too. Couldn't be any better. Love it! Happy! ;oD

Handy little mincer

I bought the small version of this to cut down on the mincing prep time to make guacamole, which I do almost every week. It was smaller than I expected and I had to rough cut onions, jalapenos, and tomatoes for them to fit. I did not use the cover/base lid, but chopped directly on a cutting board. It took a bit of practice, but I found the trick is to really pound the top of the cylinder hard with a fast pumping motion. It evenly minced the onions in less than 10 seconds, saving me 5 minutes. I rough chopped the jalapenos, placed skin side up, minced in 6 seconds, saving me another 3 min. Tomatoes were trickier. The first time I used hothouse tomatoes which are less fleshy and more juicy (even after removing the juice and seeds). It mashed more than it minced them, not always cutting cleanly through the skin, leaving a few pieces clinging to each other. When I switched to firmer plum tomatoes, bam, minced to perfection without turning them into a pulp, another 3 min saved. Next the cilantro, not a chance, I might as well been making a mojito. The thin leafy herbs quickly turned mushy. I knew well enough not to attempt it on the avocado.

Medium to firm veggies are processed very well in this chopper. I found the harder and faster the pumping action, the better the end product. After using it a few times, it cut my prep time for guac to less than a third of what I could do by hand (my dicing skills are poor to those of a pro). The scoop it comes with is kind of silly and provides no more utility than a spoon or small rubber spatula. For $10, it's a great value and works well with most firmish veggies. I found it easy to hand clean ( I read the directions on taking it apart). I did not chance putting it in a dishwasher. I intend to buy the larger one for bigger jobs.

I bought this because it is now almost impossible to find finely diced walnuts in my grocery store or online. I also ended up getting a chopper from Pampered Chef that is larger. Both do the job, but you still end up with a lot of walnut dust and pieces larger than finely diced. Only a very tiny amount of what you chop is the size of what you find in a bag of finely diced walnuts. This OXO chopper holds only a small amount, about 1 serving. It is Mini, of course, I just wasn't expecting it to be quite as mini as it is. Easy to disassemble for cleaning and cleans well in the dishwasher, but some parts are too small to leave loose in the dishwasher. I haven't had it long enough to know how sturdy it will be. It is certainly easy enough to use.

I bought the mini-chopper to chop small quantities of garlic, shallot, nuts, parsley, or whatever. It does this particular mission well -- better than any other way I have available to do these commonly required jobs. This mini chopper has earned its place in my kitchen drawer. I don't think the larger size chopper would be much of an improvement for larger chopping jobs (like whole onions) given the reviews I have read. If you have decent knife skills, you are better off with a knife. But for tiny chopping jobs, I find it annoying to use a knife for a variety of reasons -- much of the food sticks to the knife, it is hard to hold the food as you cut, if chopping nuts they roll off the board, the garlic press is always getting jammed, etc. This chopper fills the bill for small jobs like those described. It can easily be disassembled for cleaning -- which is a must and a major flaw in its competitors' offerings. The blades are surprisingly sharp which is good so the food is actually chopped not crushed. The only knock is the spring is not quite strong enough to retract the blades every time and must be manually assisted on occasion. But overall this a worthy gadget even for kitchen that is already gadget heavy.

It's a Dinky Chopper! Too big for a doll's house kitchen, but weeky-weedy when it comes to chopping an onion in anything bigger than thumb-sized.bits One has to perform so many operations with small chunks of onion (say) that it's something of a joke-hard on the hands by then....

It compares very unfavourably with the Pampered Chef chopper which we bought ten years again and it gave up a few months ago after daily service in our (domestic) kitchen. I forget what that cost, but it wasn't exhorbitant and was more than worthwhile! It worked well over many years.

I wouldn't recommend this OXO unit for serious use in a household, but it would be OK for the drinks cupboard for chopping 2 or 3 cherries, I expect.It's quite elegant, if that's what you want.
