I had an ATA IDE 80GB HD 7,200 RPM inside of a drawer, and I decided to make use of it as a backup for a laptop.

So for $7.36 I made myself a portable drive. I know that a portable drive now days is defined as a USB dongle, but there is something about a HD that makes me feel more comfortable with storing pictures, documents and music.

The enclosure is made of aluminum, which is great for this HD; since it is 7200 RPM it has a tendency to get warm. The aluminum casing helps to dissipate that heat.

There is no science or mystery related to the assembly of the HD inside of the enclosure, just to open the end of the enclosure, slide out the end with the HD connections, plug it to the HD and slide the whole assembly back into the enclosure, there are a couple of screws and a small screwdriver, to secure the enclosure from opening.

The cable provided has a secondary USB power supply, this is just in case that the device to which you are connecting the HD does not have enough power to make it work, so if that is the case you only have to connect the second USB connection to another port.
I have never had the need to connect the secondary USB cable.

Win XP - don't use disk - good product but needs better instructions

Sabrent has been good to me to date so far. I have had several products of theirs and each time I have been pleased, but the instructions for this product are seriously lacking. I believe they were written before Win XP ever came out and I have no clue if this will work with Vista, you'll have to read another review for that one.

It couldn't be any simpler of a device to put together though.
Open box, insert 2.5" laptop HDD and then slide together.
Insert holding screws (they give you a little screw driver for this as well)
connect the cable (double end goes to PC, you need 2 open USB ports on PC)
plug other cable end into unit and it'll power up and your PC will take a moment to recognize it then it's off to the races.

Transfer rates will be limited by the HDD that you place in the device.

I transferred over 12 gigs in like 25 minutes with a 5400rpm old as heck 20gig laptop HDD (yeah it's a 20gig, it's from like 2001 out of my old gateway laptop from when I was in the military).

The only thing I would like to see different with this device is a better set of instruction. If you are familiar with Sabrent though you will know that XP typically doesn't need a driver installed as they use standardized equipment and so on.

Basically this is the best bang for the buck.

Notes on the LED on the case:
green means it's ready and waiting (not in use/being read)
orange/redish light means it's either being read or written to.

No instructions or CD included with item.

Item arrived on time. Packaged Ok and item New in box but came with no directions or cd for pc on how to install. Description led me to believe it was plug and play. IT IS NOT. My drive needs to be screwed in somehow but unfortunately it is not something that I know how to do. Still sitting in box until I can Google how to assemble it. Will never order anything like this from Amazon or this company again. If I wanted to learn how to assemble a disk drive into a casing, I just would have went to my local Micro Center and bought it from there. Complete waste of my time and money.

If you are the type that likes building pcs and blindly figuring things then by all means get this product. As for the rest of us that just want things to work as specified - leave this one alone.

The package is very nice and the aluminum is quite beautiful. Before I could the hard drive, I had to take the adapter off the hard drive to expose the pins. That done, I realized that the hard had 44 pins in two rows but the enclosure part had only 40 pin holes in two rows. I plugged the enclosure into the hard drive on one side to leave 4 pins unused. Plugged two short USB ends into mac and longer side of USB cable into the rive side. The drive did not show up on the desktop. I opened the Disk Utility in Mac and the drive was accessible and I could read the folder names on the drive. But I could not read any files or copy anything from my drive to my Mac. I called Sorbent for help. They said that is software connection and they do not provide software help. I told that the drive is from Dell computer and they suggested that I should use a pc. I do have a PC. I plugged the drive into PC and worked right away without any problem. There probably is some software to use this drive with mac but I di not tr to find it. So if my drive were from Mac, I think it would have worked without problem as it did with the system from which it came rom.

Newer model than the one I've had for many years. Works excellent and allows me to reuse older drives when I upgrade. Just make sure you use a USB connection that uses full power specification as it requires full power to operate the drive. Excellent purchase and product!
