The Roaring 20's are a largely forgotten time in sports. Yet they spawned some of the all-time great rivalries and athletes in almost every sport.

Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb in baseball. Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen in golf. Bill Tilden in tennis, and Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney in heavyweight boxing.

It was the lighter weight divisions of boxing that have never seen a better time in history than during this fertile, rollicking and energetic time in our history.

Mickey Walker was born in 1901 and stepped into this scene by the time the 1920's were underway. Boxing was a different sport than. Fighters learned their crafts in the many clubs arenas and halls around the country. Every ethnicity and each geographical area had its' own favorite son. The rivalries could be intense, and it often took a fighter dozens of fights as a four round prelim fighter before he got to fight an eight round fight, much less step into a headline fight.

This book was written over a half century ago, at this writing, and is told in Mickey Walker's own words looking back as a 60 year old man. And what a life he lived!

He won the welterweight championship from long time champion Jack Britton, and defended it over many years. A mega fight against the incomparable Benny Leonard was proposed, but never came off. Yet Walker made over a million dollars before his 25th birthday (in the 1920's, this was an astounding amount of money}. He teamed with Jack Kearns, the fight manager, and every day was an adventure. Walker took to drink, and blew through both money and wives at an accelerated rate.

He moved up to middleweight, and captured that title as well. He fought the very best fighters of his day. He fought the incomparable Harry Greb, arguably the greatest fighter of all-time for the middleweight title, and lost a narrow fifteen round points decision in a fight many historians believe was the best of all-time. On his very best day, he fought Jack Sharkey for a piece of the Heavyweight title and lost a split decision that is generally believed to be one the worst verdicts of all-time.

Walker is an indisputable top ten pound for pound fighter in boxing history, and yet his story does not stop there. Once he retired, though completely unschooled, became a renowned painter and artist. He remarried three of his former wives ,and had five (as of the writing of this book) wives in total.

He battled alcoholism, yet. like John L Sullivan, overcame it on his own, through sheer willpower.

His story is remarkable. as was his spirit. This book is a rare gem.
