Reviews I read before buying this rope complained about adjustment difficulties. It is easy to adjust this rope, so I uploaded a couple of pictures to show you the ropes. :>)Adjustment: The end caps easily unscrew from the handles, and the rope ends can be pushed back out with a little manipulation. Each end will have a crimped ferrule and an extra, un-crimped ferrule on it. To shorten the rope, figure out where you want to cut it, and cut off the end, including the crimped ferrule that is on it. (Good scissors will cut the rope, but needle nosed pliers make the perfect tool for this whole operation.) No need to try to remove the old crimped ferrule from the scrap end. The un-crimped ferrule should be left on the rope, and the rope should still pass through the handle. Now crimp the new ferrule on the rope about a half inch from the end. Don't try to totally crush the ferrule. (Out of spare ferrules? See below.) Finally, pull the rope end back into the handle, put on the end cap, and go jump rope.Rope length advice: You will find advice on the web about how to determine how long to make your rope. I'm not an expert, but I can tell you it is easier to shorten a rope than it is to lengthen it. Err on the long side! Don't worry about running out of metal ferrules (two extras come on the rope). If you need to make more than two adjustments, you can use a small nylon cable tie instead (see picture), just be sure it is tight. I found that until the rope was short enough, it was hard to jump well. When it was the right length, the rope no longer felt loose and sloppy, but it didn't cramp me either. This is a good jump rope!
I have purchased three of these ropes in the past year. The first one was for me. The second one was for my girlfriend. The third one was because I was using the first one in a tight space in my garage and sliced it in half by accidentally hitting a metal shelf support. Whoops!
Some reviews have implied that there are drastically different models of this rope. All three ropes that I purchased were close to identical. The latest one has a screw-on cap versus a simple pop-off cap and that is the only difference. I can only assume that Valeo has improved these ropes over the years or the negative reviewers received something weird.
Beyond the little mishap I had with the shelf support, the first two ropes held up great with regular use. The one thing you have to understand about jump ropes is that they are disposable goods. A lot of negative reviews talk about ropes breaking but you will not find a jump rope that doesn't eventually break. I have bought a few different brands and styles of jump ropes and the Valeo rope had the best performance and held up the best out of all of them. I use mine on my concrete floored garage which isn't the best surface and it has held up fine. My wire jump ropes have not held up anywhere close as well.
Regarding performance, I think my best with singles is 150 RPM -- 100 singles in 40 seconds. Not bad. I also do double unders with these with no problem. The rope is relatively heavy compared to wire which means you have to whip it harder but it is also much easier to feel in order to get the timing right. There is a trade off. You will not be held back by this rope unless you are really an elite jump roper.
There are some negative reviews about the adjustability of these ropes. Having purchased three of these ropes in the past year, I simply do not understand these reviews. Perhaps the negative reviewers received older models or perhaps they were fakes from third party sellers. I do not know. All I know is that these are brain dead simple to adjust. All three ropes came with crimpers on both ends. This essentially gives you two shots to get it right though you could probably easily bend back the crimpers for a few more tries as long as you don't cut the rope too short. I had no problem finding a good length.
In summary, if you need a fast, durable, cheap rope, these are a no brainer. Less than $10 and you get a great rope. When my first one got chopped in half, I didn't think twice about ordering another. I would not hesitate to order another one if I need to.
This is a great jump rope and the quality for the price can't be beat! Rotation was smooth and even in both handles and the rope was good as well. I originally did my jump roping exercises on the cement portion of my back yard but i realized, after a few workouts, the ground was eating away at the line. To fix this i just put down an old carpet and voila, problem solved. This speed rope does hold a bend for a little while though so if you don't want to go into your routine with a slightly curved line just hand it up somewhere.
I've been using the speed rope for a little over half a year now and they're still working like new. The ball bearings do get a little loud from time to time but some oil fixes that up right away. If you take good care of it, it should last you quite a while.
Note: It looks like a few of the buyers are having problems with their speed ropes so i hope this helps!
If you follow these steps you shouldn't have a problem with adjusting the rope. - If getting one of the end caps off proves too difficult, use a knife and wedge the blade in then pivot and the cap should come off easy enough. - Once the cap is off, you will see two metal crimps wrapped around the rope. One free to move around and the other squeezed to create the stopper. If you do not want to use the spare they give you, just use a pair of pliers and unbend the tightened one. - Now stand on the jump rope and adjust the length until it suits you. I started with the handles pulled up right below my armpits and adjusted/cut them as I grew more proficient. Always leave a few inches more than you think you will need just in case. You can always go back and adjust again afterward. - Once you are comfortable with the length, cut the excess and using the pliers re-squeeze the crimp to where you want the line to be, with those few inches behind it. There is no need to tie the line end into a knot! - Put the cap back on and enjoy your customized jump rope!
This is honestly the first "professional" style jump rope I have ever used, and I guess as far as jump ropes that I've used go it's pretty good. The major thing that sets it aside from the playground variety, besides being conspicuously absent of Dora the Explorer or unicorns, is that the rope is attached to the handles by a rotating shaft fitted with ball bearings, so the rope can't get "tied up" in itself and not circle easily. This is a feature I didn't know that I wanted but am glad that I have. The other feature I liked about it is that you can cut and fit the rope to your height which makes it easier to jump steadily and quickly through it without it getting tied up all around you or getting the rhythm too far off. The handles are very soft yet still easy to hold, and the rope is plastic and has a nice weight to it so it's easy to keep it going at an even pace. If I wasn't so lamentably out of shape I bet I could keep this going for quite a while. But as it is a minute goes past and then I have to go lie down and cry into my bed made out of Hot Pockets and damn the cosmos. But that of course is why I bought this to begin with, and hopefully one day I'll be able to actually figure out just how great of a jump rope this is. For now, I am left only with suspicion of its greatness.
You will not be disappointed with the quality of this product, but it "MUST" be used on a "SMOOTH" surface! Do Not use it on any type of rough surface, or you will permanently destroy this product.
The Valeo ‘rope’ is a 10 foot rubberised variety speed rope. It is a compromise between the weight of the slower heavy cotton ropes, which are slower and the faster thin leather variety. The rubber rope allows for speed and if, like me, you need a breather half way through your reps then you can slow down more easily than with the leather variety.
Straight out of the envelope this is not an impressive sight, attached to a card backing & looks a bit flimsy.
The rope is held by 2 foam covered plastic handles. The handles have ends that can be unscrewed, the rope pulled through & trimmed to your requirements. If you need to trim remember to leave excess and don’t trim exactly where you think you need it to. You can fit the excess into the handles & this will allow for any mistakes, once it’s cut it’s cut! The rope is held within the handles by a small metal collar. If you need to trim there is a spare collar in each handle that just needs to be crimped using pliers. A nice touch that simplifies things.
Each handle has a bearing race that eases the rope through it’s revolutions.
In practice all first impressions of this being a bit lightweight are blown away by a terrific performance. The rubber ‘rope’ is heavy enough to aid turning and light enough to aid speed. A few practices iron out the kinks made by the packaging & then you’re away!
The rope turns very smoothly, a minimum of effort is needed to initiate each revolution and this soon shows itself to be a well balanced and thought out product.
Remember to keep your hands not to far from your hips & let the rope do the work, you should only need a gentle circular movement of the wrists, your arms should be static. A rapid workout of just 50 or so reps will really get the ticker going if you’re not used to it. It’s amazing just how effective a cardio workout skipping can be.
This Valeo rope is well made and easy to adapt to personal needs. Well worth the money.
