Great service and scorpions too!

Great service and scorpions too!
Bought this light in July of 2009. The Xenon bulb quit working in the first week. So why the heck would I rate it a five!? Service (way) after the fact. I walk several hundred miles a year through the Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area and a significant portion of it is at night looking for scorpions. This light does that VERY well. The fact that I have another light that I prefer for visible light, and that I might have to register myself as a procrastinator extraordinaire, I never did anything about that portion of this light not working. I happened to be working on a warranty issue for another unrelated product (with way less than satisfactory results so will not even go there) so I contacted Streamlight to see what we could do. Five minutes and done! The knowledgeable young lady on the phone said send it back and we will send a new one right away. That is customer service! I feel this is a quality light and the fact that they stand behind it rates five stars. So how well does it work for finding scorpions? Fantastic!! The two wave lengths basically light up the same things. The lowest may fluoresce a few things a little more but it is basically a dimmer light and you have to get the light very close or in very dark situations. The higher UV wave length puts out a brighter light and lights up the scorpions exceptionally well with a bit less distance on moonlit nights. In situations where you are looking solely for scorpions you use just the UV light. A typical night of exploration in the dunes means that you are looking for lizards, snakes and bugs too! A very effective way to explore the desert at night is too use a good bright flashlight to see all that is ahead and around you yet carry your UV light turned on and pointed toward the ground. You will be amazed at how many scorpions you would have stepped on otherwise as they blend in so well.

I've been using this UV flashlight for 2 months now to clean up after one of my cats who likes to spray and I have to say, I'm glad I bought it while at the same time regretting it. This light has found every spray and urine spot in the house...and I mean EVERY. YIKES!!

This flashlight is effective in finding spots using both the 3-light and 6-light settings. The 6-light setting is of course brighter and makes even the smallest of stains pop out from the walls and floors. Furthermore, the Xenon bulb comes in handing when needing to use this as a standard flashlight.

I would recommend purchasing the yellow UV safety glasses Crews Glasses, Safety, Amber Lens, 99.9% UV Protection with this flashlight. I purchased some at a local home improvement store and it makes it even easier to spot stains under the UV light. I found that using the UV in a dark room made my eyes burn a bit and these glasses helped reduce that.

The flashlight is well built and seems very durable. As durable as the ubiquitous Mag Lights. This flashlight has a lot of wight to it and seems like it would last a long time. Which is good, cause dealing with a straying cat is a never-ending battle.

In addition to using this light for finding pet stains I would also like it to hunt scorpions at night and I know this flashlight would be great for just that.

I know there were a number of "negative" reviews for this product indicating that users couldn't see the light. I would like to remind everyone that this is a UV flashlight and works best in the dark. UV light cannot be seen during the day or with the house lights on. However, while using the aforementioned UV safety glasses, some stains can be found in an area with some light.

This is simply a great UV flashlight, especially for the price. I have nothing negative to say about this UV flashlight other than I sometimes wish it didn't work so well. LOL!

I hope this review helps and feel free to ask me any questions you might have about this product.

Follow up: I now own 3 of them and all 3 have some burned out LEDs

I was surprized at how well built this flashlight is. The frequency of UV light is perfect for detecting leaks in cooling systems for both automotive and residential applications. It also works well for amature forensic purposes, and scorpions will appear luminescent. The xenon bulb is very nice but not the brightest light you can find and you have to depress the switch three times to use the xenon bulb. I am very pleased with my purchase, but it is overpriced. If you are not buying this light mostly for the UV purposes then you probably want something else. UPDATE: I have had it for over a year now and one of the Led lights on the module is burned out, keep this in mind when buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy With My Purchase :-)
Reviewed in Canada on April 23, 2014
Flashlight appears to be solid and well-made. There's a strong beam of white light. The higher UV light reveals cat urine well, but the room should be somewhat dark when you're using it. I don't have a use so far for the lower UV setting. I can see many yellow spots from several feet away, but I need to be closer for a more thorough inspection. There is the question of what exactly this light is detecting. For example, there is an evenly distributed yellow highlight around the entire perimeter of the wall to wall carpet in the basement, and there's no way the cat did such a thorough and regular wetting. So what is it? I ask that question a lot. The UV will influence me to clean a lot more than I have been. Can't speak to the longevity of the Streamlight yet. That's why I held back on the 5th star. So far I'm happy with my purchase.
April 2015: Still working great! Good product! Bumping it up to 5 star.
