This product is really intended for someone that does a lot of work on hard drives. Data recovery, wipe and destroy...that sort of thing. It isn't really suited to someone that wants to use it as a regular connection to an extra hard drive...though it certainly can do this. If you want an extra drive, you can purchase very inexpensive USB drives almost anywhere.

For me, it worked right out of the box on an old WD 1.6 gig drive and a Quantum 1.6 gig.

Some Caveats:

Find a mouse pad or some such to set the drive on. DON'T JUST SET IT ON TOP OF YOUR CHASSIS OR METAL OF ANY KIND. You are dealing with an unmounted IDE drive. If some of the connections or jumpers on the bottom touch--or even just come close to-- metal you could screw things up quite nicely.

The "manual" that comes with it is a single sheet of paper about 3 by 3 with the typical butchered English that we have all come to expect from our fine overseas suppliers. One of the only intelligible pieces of info on this form is "set your drive to Master". If you do not know what this means, get some help with it. Most drives have a sticker on them showing the jumper configurations, some do not. Others may have the jumpers labeled with tiny letters like MA, SL, CS, etc. For me, I found that the WD had to be set on Master and the Quantum on Single.

NOTE: If the drive is not formatted or the partition is corrupted, Win2K and WinXP might connect it but be unable to assign a drive letter. Simply go to your Disk Manager and create partition/format/assign the drive.

I have about 100 drives I have to wipe before handing them over to an artist...this product is going to make it relatively painless.

Update: 5/26/16
Went to use this today and the power supply has given up the ghost. I used this quite a bit when I first got it but it has just been sitting ever since. It's been 10 years...but it's not like it got that much use.

How did I ever manage without this!

WOW! I'm totally impressed. I bought this device after reading mostly positive reviews thinking that it would work but I might have to tweak with it a bit. WRONG! I just plugged it in and heard the familiar 'bong' of Windows XP finding a new device. Managed to drag several gigabytes of data from an old hard drive to my new PC then connected another hard drive

I really can't complain about this product, it works as advertised and I didn't manage to catch anything on fire.

Once you toss the horrible instructions and unneeded driver CD's it's quite easy to use. Plug the IDE end of the cable into your drive, connect power to your drive, then plug the USB end of the cable into your machine or USB hub and after a few seconds your system should detect the drive as a standard USB mass storage device.

Not exactly pretty, and it doesn't protect your drive, so you don't want to use this as a solution for permanantly hooking up a drive to your box. However, if you just need to preform weekly backups, clone a HDD, or recover data this is the perfect tool.

This Adapter is an IT Neccessity!

As an IT Specialist at a high school and as a part-time computer consultant, I have what seems like a daily need back up, test, clone, or wipe hard drives. This handy adapter allows me to do all of that without opening up a desktop PC and hooking up the hard drive. I take my incredibly portably Tablet PC with me everywhere I go, and if I need to do any one of those things I mentioned I can hook up the IDE hard drive straight to my tablet and do it. I'll be buying the SATA version of this adapter very soon as well!

I'm not sure why this product has so many bad reviews but it doesn't deserve it. This is a excellent product and it works great for laptop hard drives and regular desktop hard drives. It worked perfect right out of the box and it was shipped fast. The product was not cheap as some described it and it looks as if it was updated since the original pictures of this product was taken. It is great for the money and I was able to save my data thanks to this usb-ide cord. =)

It came today; my primary purpose was to Acronis Migrate from one small disk to a larger one. My old USB external drive case died, so I ordered the cheapest thing I could find that might work.

Plugged it in (IDE & power), plugged it into the PC, nada. No beep, nothing. I was thinking that maybe the drive was bad since it didn't work in my old drive case. Futzed a bit, then remembered what another reviewer here on Amazon.com said. Something about "master"...

I'm not a manual reader. Nor do I install software if I think it should work without. But a I vaguely remember somebody saying "don't forget to put the jumper on 'master'...", and sure enough, move the jumper from CS (cable select) to master, and all worked well. I liked the little activity LED molded into the connector.

It's silly that the thing doesn't have CS built in since there's only ONE possible drive to connect. I guess that's why it was a whole SIXTEEN DOLLARS! Acronis is still running, but I have no doubt it'll finish fine.

Buy it, but MIND THE JUMPER!
