A Tall-Tale Hoot of an American Classic...

This movie should be included in any list of the top 25 comedies, certainly of the Last Millennium, or the top 100 movies ever. Obviously, Jeff Bridges had to be at the top of his game, but Every character is well-realized and acted by this all-star cast, including Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, John Turturro, Julianne Moore, David Huddleston, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Tara Reid, Sam Elliott, Peter Stormare, - How did the Coen Brothers amass such a wealth of talent for this film? - and a host of others, all giving transcendent performances. Anyway, this movie takes a case of mistaken-identity to sublimely ridiculous extremes, all the while slyly injecting social commentary into the narrative - speaking of which, Elliott's intermittent narration of the story lends just the right tone. I don't think it's possible to say much about this film without ruining the expository fun of seeing the plot's - and the screenplay's developments. The droll dialogue is intrinsic to the hilarity and overall feel of this great American classic film...

For some reason, I never saw this movie when it came out originally but I recently stumbled upon and watched it on HBO and it's now one of my favorite movies of all time. It's definitely surpassed Raising Arizona as my favorite Coen Brothers film. The casting for this movie is absolutely perfect; I can't imagine replacing any of the actors. The plot and dream sequences are awesome and the absurdity sublime. There are enough good plot reviews here that I won't cover that; I just wanted to throw my two cents on what I think is another American and Coen Brothers comedy classic.

This has got to be hands down one of the funniest films ever made. I love everything about it,Walter played by John Goodman steals the movie. There is just so much funny stuff in here. The dude with his white russians and his car getting damaged more and.more every day. The dude has the best lifestyle ever he don't let anything bother him. He always has Walter ruin his plans and
it's just gotta be seen to understand
and appreciate it. A stoner movie
for sure and if you don't do drugs
it's still gonna make you laugh.
The story goes there are 2 people with the Lebowski name,1 being the dude who gets mistaken for the BIG lebowski. They say ransom is owed in the amount of 1 million dollars. There is mistaken identity that pulls the dude into it,then he gets roped into helping the big Lebowski because he goes & wants a rug that he lost. So the big Lebowski has the dude be the middleman to give the ransom.The craziness gets deeper and deeper as more and more people get involved and at the end you find out that the big Lebowski never wanted his wife back. He is full of himself but the dude and Walter set things straight. An all star cast makes the movie one of the best comedies ever made. Must watch.

Bucket List movie !

One of the all time classic silly funny movies, perhaps the best Coen Brothers movie. It deserves a place on the bucket list of every "guy" from the 70's and 80's. For complete viewing pleasure, watch on a big screen with good speakers, and cold beer (or White Russians) You will never think the same about Jeff Bridges again -- he was masterful. He must have has so much fun playing "the Dude."
viewer advisory: the dialog is quite full of zesty expletives and some other R-stuff, so not for the children or faint of heart..

Inquiring mind

One of the best movies EVER.

OK, this is probably not an unbiased review because I am a Big Lebowski fan from way back. This is my second favorite movie of all time. If you love the Coen brothers, you will like this movie. As if everyone on earth hasn't seen it.
If cursing isn't your thing, don't bother. They drop the F bomb a lot. In fact, one of my favorite lines is where Sam Elliott says to The Dude, "You curse too much," and The Dude replies, "What the f*** you talkin' about?"
I saw an interview with Jeff Bridges where he said whenever he happens upon this movie while channel surfing, he watches it, and he said, "That was some good work," or something like that. John Goodman and (RIP) Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, and believe it or not, Ben Gazarra all turned in stellar performances.
You MUST see this movie.

okay when i was a teen, amazing now that i'm a lot older!

this movie entertained me a bit when i was a silly teenager, drinking and having no responsibilities, and i had largely forgotten it. now there is a bunch of hype around it with mixing it with taoism and zen.

so i re watched it and was enthralled. the dude's attitude toward life, his ability to let go of things and remain cool is inspiring. something i couldn't see when i was young. to be an adult and maintain his attitude on life is a really amazing feat! i'm now a drug and alcohol free devout buddhist and i saw a whole different film! i have lots of responsibilities and am always trying to focus on the dhamma to keep my mind free but i was too uptight with my overall attitude, watching this movie inspired me to relax a lot more.

do i agree that the dude is a zen master? um... no, i do not. he smokes pot and drinks alcohol all day, lies, and speaks harshly.
i suppose the dude could be the 70's definition of a hippie zen master though he is not a zen master in the classical sense.

could he be a taoist master? sure, why not, that is an extremely vague concept so pinning it down is nearly impossible. read the tao te ching and some chuang tzu. they're all over the place! the dude could fit right in a story from the chuang tzu no problem!

however are there zen elements in the film? definitely! the whole attitude of just letting everything go is very zen. especially of not taking things personally, being neutral and non violent, living in the moment and not over thinking things. i mean they are in a heap of trouble and decide to go bowling! that's very zen lol!

very great film. i'm picking up the new book from the library today. "the dude and the zen master" jeff bridges and bernie glassman. after reading an interview i now think jeff is probably a really cool guy in real life and this bernie glassman guy sounds like a class act, a real example of zen! both are people i would like to learn more about.
