1 I Just Called To Say I Love You featuring Raul Midon (also featuring Stevie Wonder on harmonica)

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Imagine the possibilities…..

"Possibilities" is the musical event of the year. The album is a series of inspired encounters between Herbie Hancock and world-renowned musicians – including John Mayer, Sting, Trey Anastasio, Annie Lennox, Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan, Santana and Angelique Kidjo, Paul Simon, Christina Aguilera, Jonny Lang, Joss Stone, and Raul Midon. Herbie Hancock describes "Possibilities" this way: "This is a real collaboration that we’re doing here. It’s all been decided at the session, a record without borders, woven like a tapestry with many colors. The possibilities are endless."

Amazon.com

Possibilities, by jazz piano/keyboard legend Herbie Hancock, with songs by Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, and Leon Russell, is a multigenerational masterpiece. Rock's "it boy" John Mayer leads off the CD with the spare, bouncy opener, "Stitched Up." Brit-born soul girl Joss Stone and bluesman Jonny Lang get down on the gutbucket "When Love Comes to Town." Christina Aguilera’s excellent vocals illuminate "A Song for You." Not to be outdone, Annie Lennox delivers an operatic take on Holly Cole’s "Hush, Hush, Hush," while Sting's "Sister Moon" swings with stealthy syncopations. Santana and the Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo provide the world flavor on "Safiotou," and the dreamy "Gelo No Montana," with ex-Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, is the lone instrumental. Hancock’s tight solos and intelligent orchestral synths radiate all of the tracks. Like Frank Sinatra’s Duets and Ray Charles’s Genius Loves Company, Possibilities introduces Hancock to a new and awestruck generation. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

I remember hearing some of these songs on the radio when the album was first released like "Stitched Up" featuring John Mayer, but after watching the documentary about the making of the album I discovered some other gems. I purchased the entire album only recently, but it is a new favorite for listening at home and in the office. This version of "I Just Called to Say I Love You," is rich and soulful, officially my new favorite arrangement of that piece. "When Love Comes to Town," featuring Jonny Lang and Joss Stone on vocals picks of the tempo with a style that reminds me of the old Tina Turner tune, "Nutbush City Limits."

All in all, it's like a great little dish of mixed nuts. You can pick around and pull out something that suits nearly any mood or simply let the entire album play for an hour or so of great vocals mixed with the amazing Herbie Hancock on piano. It's rare for me to purchase entire albums in recent years versus a few individual songs. This is the rare collection where most songs are five stars for me and only a couple rate a four of five on my personal scale simply as a matter of my particular preferences. The quality is consistently good for all.

I bought the cd for the song "I Just Called to say I love you." I’m one of a precious few people to get the pure artistry and genuis of the song. Some like a song for a beat or words; but this song comes from the heart. Love it!

I'm a piano teacher and jazz piano player. One of my student's parents gave this to me. It's great because you get Herbie's legendary jazz piano playing in a lot of different settings with interesting and mostly succussful results. Especially notable are the remake of Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" (Stevie plays a solo, but is not the singer!), Angelique Kidjo and Santana, a stunning performance by Christina Aguilera (if she made an entire album of material like this, it would possibly be one of the greatest jazz vocal albums ever... how can somebody even say something like that? you have to hear her with Herbie... she's so good it's scary... a pop singer with an alter-ego... almost as ridiculous as if Britney Spears were cutting jazz records on the side like Ella F or Sarah V--totally not fair!!! Anyway, this is about Herbie, and the album provides a good introduction to why he's the man. Check out the guest artists and the songs, and if you know and like them, you'll love this album....

The first time I heard "Stitched Up", I immediately recognized John Mayer's soulful voice and asked myself, when he come out with a jazz album? Well, I had to wait until the song was over to find out it wasn't John Mayer, but really Herbie Hancock. This is an amazing CD which deserves my 5 star rating. However, after playing "Stitched Up" several times, I can't quite understand why John Mayer and Herbie Hancock chose only to collaborate on this one song because it is the best song on this album so far. I really enjoyed listening to the jazzy styling of "Sister Moon", by Sting and "A Song for You", so beautifully vocalized by Christina Aguilera and "I Just Called to Say I Love You" by Raul Midon (who by the way sounds so much like Stevie Wonder).

Overall, this is a wonderful CD to listen to as you are driving down PCH, with the windows down and the wind in your hair!!

For some reason I bought this cd in 2006 I think and then something happened to it then I realized you can’t get in the states.
Digital and cds have some weird agreement especially with special edition longer soundtracks are only on cd. The only one I have seen recently in a special edition online was the 1991 Rocketeer which is great, I hope they quit this only available in other countries bs and put all this on digital

I really love this album! Very valuable and unexpected collaboration tracks for everyone who loves smooth and jazzy music.
Perhaps a bit mainstream in comparison to othe Herbie Hancock works, but I don't care.
Buy it - 'cause it ain't in Spotitunes as far as I've checked.

I think this CD is very nice. I am very satisfied with the quality. I think Herbie is very talented as a musician and a great human being who has brought out the very genuine and artistic side of each of the artists. We hear a new and different side to the famous artists and for the first time hear the enthusiastic sides to the not so famous artists.
Bringing the jazz/world feel to the pop feel makes this a very unique effort and the result is not only successful but touching and memorable.
I think this is one of his best cd's and one that will remain a cd that will be played for a long time as a memorable one.
It gives the feeling that the artists on the cd will also like the cd themselves personally as unique.
I already find myself recalling the melodys within myself.
There's that much human emotion in it. It's unique and nice that it's coming from a jazz-oriented artist.
This cd gives hope to humankind. It reaches many people.
