By Ubaldo L. on September 25, 2015 Verified Purchase I had two of these web cams in 2007 and, at the time they gave beautiful images, but were temperamental, cpu intensive and difficult to install. Recently I tried again to use one of them on a windows 7 system for internal surveillance of my second home. The cam is exquisite. You can move it remotely and the image is clear. You can even zoom. Thus I decided to buy more of these old web cams. However, there are some caveats. The orb cam is capricious to install. You need to make sure that your windows system has all the last updates. You then boot without the web cam usb inserted. When the computer is stabilized you plug in the usb and wait (forever) that it finds the drivers automatically. I tried to manually download the drivers from the Logitech website, to be frustrated with finding out that there are no official drivers for windows 7. The automatic drivers installation, however, works for me. I think it works by running a Windows Vista shell. I was very upset by all those glib comments that I read on various forums that advised to just buy a new cam. A final note. If you run the orb on a very long usb cable, or the cable is not good, you will get a usb error message. This is because the orb requires short of 400 mA, and the current falls on long usb cables because of resistance. A self-powered usb hub (placed away, not near the computer) will help. Finally, you may have to disconnect the virus checker during instsllation, because it may feel that the drivers--which write on the registry--are some kind of malware. So those looking at this as a cheap security surveillance camera may not necessarily find what they are looking for. This camera has a reasonably high maximum resolution of 1600x1200 (~2 MegaPixel), however I just want to say that if you're going to record using the included Logitech application, the frame rate is capped at 15 FPS and not the 30 FPS written on the specs/box. RightLight technology brightens the picture/video by extending exposure time, thus waiting longer before closing the shutter. the result is a even lower frame rate. This can go terribly low all the way down to 1 fps if your lighting conditions are bad. The Face tracking feature is also very poor and is most likely not going to be what you expected, as it will almost always loose track of you and then focus and stick on a random object, never moving again until you press the 'recenter' button on the PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) controls. I also noticed that sometimes during panning, it may stick and need re centering as well. The panning is jerky and not smooth, and also not fast which could be one of the reasons why face tracking doesn't work that well. The Zoom on this camera is purely digital which means it crops a portion of a image and attempts to fill in missing details by sampling the pixels nearby, at the max resolution, zooming in max will still obviously produce a blurry image. The pan range (horizontally) is an acceptable 189 degree, but the tilt (vertical) 102 degrees limits its ability to see straight up (or down if on a ceiling) effectively producing a blind spot in your surveillance zone. On the hardware side of things, this is a USB Camera, again obvious but what you may not know is these kinds of camera have no hardware processing at all leaving it up to your pc to process the data. this means that depending on the speed of your computer, you may not be able to record at HD resolutions. All of the processing that needs to be done is most likely done in software on the PC, even the auto-focus adjusting. It's just a very simple and light camera component on a motorized housing. The included software does not allow you to turn off the amber LED while it is on, but you can do so with a simple registry edit for the appropriate DWORD value. This particular model of this camera includes a mechanical auto-focus lens. You could, clearly use other 3rd party programs to increase the effectiveness of the product. Webcam 7 allows you to monitor your camera remotely, but the Zoom feature does not work from there. Kinda made me concerned if the item is what I ordered or it is fine. When I opened the bag I found the camera, no damage found. Thankfully. Plugged it in my computer, installed the driver successfully then it needed it's software. So here's where the problem begins: This webcam does not like webcam softwares (Windows Lifecam and Cyberlink). Not even it's own (Windows Lifecam). Perhaps it might record better in using said programs, but it starts doing weird things. Such as the pitch in the audio goes down, video speeds up or slows down and sometimes it stops recording and includes the length of how long it is on. So a pseudorecording we can call it? Very strange things. However, the webcam still holds 720p. Auto-focus is a little annoying but if you know how to make it focus by moving around or shining a light on it, it's okay. Best software I used with it: Windows Live Moviemaker. With Moviemaker, I did not get the same problems as I did with the other programs. So that's better for recording with the webcam. You can move the webcam around in a 360 angle, move it and set it down wherever you want as long it remains connected to the computer. OH! Also the cord has this little doo-hicky that helps you keep the cord in place so you don't get a tangled mess. That's a plus right thar! :D Microphone is great. Keeps most sound out and compared to most built-in webcams (My computer is a Compaq Presario CQ57 by the way.) the recorded sound is a hell of a lot more crisper. Every time the webcam is in use, a blue light comes out from the bottom of the lens. Don't worry, won't get recorded unless you hold a mirror to it. Can't we do better these days?

Perhaps science fiction has set the bar too high, but this purchase didn't do much for me. First off, the files created/used by this thing are really clumsy. There are tech-savvy reviews that will give you the details, but the end result for the user is a slow refresh rate and picture degradation.

Another thing is that its 'follow' feature didn't work for me. There is a large plant near the front of the room, and this webcam would always roll over to it and focus in on it. I would practically have to yell and do summersaults to get the camera to twitch in my direction. Then, it would just roll back to the plant (...I actually started to take it a bit personally).

Anyway, when people are in the room sitting quietly; the camera did a nice job--good resolution, good light adjustment, good sound management, etc. As soon as people started moving around or conversation became animated on our end, the experience starts to skip and break up.

Also, this camera works for PC only. If you're going to have more than one type of machine running the show (e.g., visiting speakers, etc.), then you had better make sure that they have a PC with all of the Logitech software on it or that they are comfortable using your equipment.

Normally, I love Logitech. However, I'm getting a different webcam for my home office.

Great webcam, easy set-up

Whenever I read reviews for a webcam they always went from one extreme to the other; they were either great cameras with easy installation or so-so cameras with very problematic installation. I never knew what my experience would be. I found it all depends upon what computer and operating system you're using, and that you need to consider the "computer-savviness" of the user. I would rate my computer-savviness as a 5 on a scale of 1-10. I use Windows XP, with Internet Explorer 6, and had all the necessary system requirements on my computer for this webcam. One thing I would highly recommend is that you take the time to make sure your computer is updated with all the latest recommended updates! Sometimes we postpone those updates for a long time and then never get around to downloading and installing them. Now is the time to make the time for that. I spent about an hour making sure my computer was completely updated (I specifically needed Windows XP Service Pack 2 before I could even download the webcam software). I gave my computer one full night of automatic updates from Microsoft, then downloaded and installed the webcam software the next night. It was fairly easy, I must say. There are some areas that aren't too clear, but you can pretty much figure your way around the interface. I bought other Logitech webcams for family members and theirs are all installed and we're happily using them so the grandparents can see their grandson any time they want to, live, in person! The only negative I have to report is that the face tracking doesn't work great all the time; it will follow my face one time, then not follow it back - it's as if when it moves with my face it refocuses on something else in the room and then doesn't track my face anymore. But that is not a huge deal in our use, so no biggie.

Didn't realize this cam wasn't supported under Windows 7 x64, but a bit of googling shows that to be the case.

This re-enabled tilt, pan, zoom, facial recognition and all else. after (manually, pointed to driver folder after extracting with 7zip) installing this driver, the cam works great and is top quality for the price i paid.
