- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2010This is a brilliant adaptation of Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist!" I've just finished viewing it for the second time and it will stay with me for some time to come.
First let me say that if you are looking for the popular musical, "Oliver!" with the famous songs "Who Will Buy?" and "Consider Yourself" and "Oom Pah Pah" you will not find them here. Not to take away from the musical at all (for it is itself a great work), this particular masterpiece of theatre is, by comparison, a dark, brooding, foggy, muddy, cold, rainy, sullen and raw depiction of the London-based classic. It is not a comedy by any means. It is not uplifting. Oliver (wondrously portrayed by Barney Clark), while exceedingly appealing does not come across as precocious. His 'realness' is what makes his character so believable. Roman Polanski's film is very faithful to Dickens' novel; this boy Oliver suffers greatly for being an orphan.
Almost all of the characters in the film are absolute scallywags. From the first scene of the movie it is clear that Oliver is so unloved and uncared for. He knows nothing but misery as he is chased and hunted, envied, lied on, lied to, mislead and detested. From the time in the workhouse when he is chosen by lot to beg for more food, ["Please, sir, I want some more"] he is running for his life in hopes of achieving safety and compassion. If it were not for the kindness of a rich man and his housekeeper he would have no reason to have faith in humankind. Ultimately he triumphs after having been beat down so much, yet the triumph he experiences (though mildly anti-climactic) is worth enduring his perilous travails as an orphan.
Barney Clark should have been nominated for and should have won an Academy award for his work here, as well as Roman Polanski for his directing, Ben Kingsley for his portrayal of Mr. Fagin, and the motion picture itself. I am thoroughly impressed with what I've seen here, and no other adaptation will ever come close.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2024No other version can compare to this one of Oliver Twist. The actors are perfectly cast, and portrayed with real depth. Dodger is full of energy and youthful cunning, where you get the idea he could go either way in life, depending simply on who he chooses to influence him. The third party seller delivered it timely and it was a good price, eleven bucks. Definitely worth watching again--even if only for Kingsley's delightful portrayal of Fagin.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2013This review is not so much a rating for the movie, but the quality of the disc. I bought the DVD about 6 months ago and never had time to watch it. Until a few days ago. After 1h 41m the movie got stuck! Took it out of the player, carefully examined the DVD surface... not the slightest scratch or dust particle to be seen. Put it back in, jump to the scene and... stuck again. I have another player... guess what, it gets stuck already at the annoying SONY Pictures opening logo. Tried the disc in two different PCs, same problem: SONY Pictures logo and then... nothing. Ultimately tried to make a copy using DVDFab, a wonderful program that usually helps out, but nope: error reading disc. Of course it is too late now to send it back. I did like the movie though, so I'll spend another 10 bucks for a new copy. Hopefully I can then return here to add some more stars.
OK, I re-ordered the DVD and this one is working all the way. So let's just say it is like buying wine. Sometimes you are unlucky to have a bad bottle. The movie is great. Very well acting and the atmosphere of the age is well represented. It was worth wile to have bought the second copy and moving up to 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2019My 2nd grader read an abbreviated version of the book. I used this movie as motivation to finish the book in a timely manner.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2011As a Dickens maniac and something of an Oliver Twist buff, I was a bit dubious about yet another screen adaption.
As it happens, I was absolutely delighted by this movie! Although necessarily condensed, it truly captures the emotional power of the story in a captivating and haunting way. The acting and casting were truly superb- many of the characters are portrayed as vividly as I could ever picture them while reading the book. A definite salute to Ben Kingsley as a fascinatingly creepy-crawly Fagin and Barney Clark as a very sypathetic and innocent yet resilient Oliver. I also loved seeing Edward Hardwicke in a role other than Watson to Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes.
Gritty, heart-wrenching and really exquisite, this adaption verily immerses you in the wonderful story of Oliver Twist in a manner that stands out from all of the other adaptions I have seen. Fantastic job, I think Dickens would approve very much.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go read the book all over again! :)

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2019I remember when this was in the theatre and it didn't do well, it had two things working against it, the Lionel Bart musical version and the notorious reputation of Roman Polanski. This film is far from musical and the edited story line really will be apparent to anyone who read the book but it does not prevent this well acted moody film from being enjoyable. The Blu Ray is beautiful and to watch in English you have to access set up and follow the prompts.
