- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2017Amazing upgrade, fit fine on a 1994 Explorer. Driving the truck feels like a different vehicle now; AMAZING IMPROVEMENT for daily-driving comfort. No more wobbling of the gear stick. No reaching and "rowing" from gear to gear. Improved use of the cup holders that used to get in the way. Throw distance feels reduced by about 1/3 of OEM if not in half. Very firm and "committed"/precise shifting, with a really satisfying CLICK that you get every time you shift is what I enjoy the most. It's a pricy part, but very well worth it considering how much fresher the truck feels to drive now.
The only negative I could find is you will notice a change in the sound of the transmission. Some of the vibration and gear meshing that used to be eaten up by the dangling 5-pound OEM stick has to go somewhere. My plan is to experiment with a bit of friction modifier product that is marketed for e.g. quieting power steering, and maybe replace the speedo gear (mine is sqealy to begin with).
Some tips/caveats/how to get it right the first time: triple-check how you're putting on the gasket and spacer (if you need the extra length). DO USE LOCKTITE. I didn't put the shifter boot back on for a few hundred KM to see if anything would vibrate loose (it didn't for me). It is possible to reuse the original shifter boot if you're willing to saw the original shifter in half. I did. The boot and carpet make a major difference in how much noise you get, so take the time to reinstall properly.
Short-shifting/performance driving: your outcome will depend a lot on how your synchro rings are doing, as well as to a noticeable degree on the kind (and amount) of transmission fluid you have. I find that shifting is quicker overall, but I do get the rare GRRRIND if I really hurry it up going from 1st into 2nd gear.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2016Works so much more smoothly than my stock shifter in 2003 Ranger. Easy enough to install, but absolutely put thread lock on the 3rd and 4th gear stops. Otherwise they'll loosen and rattle like crazy in a day or two. It says this in the instructions, but who reads those? Finish is nice, the boot was kind of difficult to get to fit right in my stock cup holder device thing. I debated cutting off the fifth ring but left it in place in the end and just adjusted a bunch with some strategic trimming of my cup holder. The plate on top of the boot was a b1tch as well. Make sure to put it on before you put the shaft through the hole, otherwise it might actually be impossible to get on. I actually had to cut off the retaining clip a bit on my cup holder too, so make sure you know this going in, at least on a 2003 ranger it will take some minor modifications to fit.
Shifting is great though, extremely solid and the springs are very strong with very little play. I was having a lot of issues with shifting into first with the stock shifter, and most of the time I us to go to 2nd first. This nearly eliminated that issue, but once in a while it takes a little extra force to go into first. Not nearly like it was before. Kind of expensive piece for an old truck but it sure looks nice and it seems like a good investment to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2020Installed easily. I followed the included instructions and it feels much smoother with nice clicks when fully into gear. Shorter throw is nice and gives a bit more room if I'm fitting 3 or 4 people in a single cab. No leaks, no problems, no extra stress on the tranny that I've noticed.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2024I installed this Hurst shifter in my 2011 5-speed Ford Ranger. Functionally, this shifter is great. It provides a nice, tight shift pattern as expected from a Hurst shifter. However, the shifter developed a loud, obnoxious rattle after a short time period. I've seen other reviews that report the same condition. In the end, I removed the Hurst shifter and reinstalled the Ford shifter.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2015Installed this beauty into my Ranger within the hour it arrived. Easy to install, instructions were specific and easy to follow, and the results were well worth the cost of shipping it to Canada. The transmission now feels tight and precise, shifting is noticably faster, and who can argue with the classic Hurst look?
Remember, the old version of the shifter had some problems with the vent building pressure, and the new version fixed this so there is no need to modify your transmission anymore.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2024I was very hesitant to buy this but glad I did. The stock Ranger will never be fast but it sure is cool having a Hurst shifter. I have a 1997 Ranger with the 2.3 and this fits great. Remember to put your vehicle in neutral. That was my main problem thought it didn’t fit. Also, the 97 needed the spacer so remember to use that. Had to fit the boot upside down to work better, learned that. People complain about the noise but the truck is already noisy so didn’t bother me much. The price was at 405 when I bought it. First gear I kind of miss sometimes when downshifting so be aware of that. Don’t think it’s me because I’ve been driving stick for 20+ years. All and all I’d say get it. Yes there are other brands a little cheaper but I’m not familiar with them. I know that truck I ain’t no stranger!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2015100% worth it! Easy install about an hour (including me finding the tools). No more having to wiggle the stick to get it in gear. It removes ALL the slop, and it makes the best sound when you shift too Its a perfect little "click" "click", one when you shift out of gear and one when you shift in.
The only cons:
you need Allen wrenches and torx bits (common sizes)
also the boot is bigger than the original so you need to drill new holes to make it fit.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021Shifter rod should be different as far as long and/or angled or at least have the option when purchasing instead of having to spend more money on buying a different rod for over a hundred dollars. Also should have some isolator or noise reduction because you can hear thru the shifter the noises in the transmission

Marc S.Reviewed in Canada on October 13, 20231.0 out of 5 stars I've never been more disappointed.
This shifter rattles internally on acceleration and deceleration. Very distracting, and way worse that how sweet it shifts. I've tried greasing - tightening the mechanical stops and loosening the mechanical stops. If I got it for free I would still remove it.
