By Samuel C. on March 17, 2008 Verified Purchase Installing one of these in your empty iMac slot and thereby doubling your memory is still a no-expense no-brainer operation, accomplished more quickly and easily than doubling the memory of a Macbook. The only tool needed is a small Phillips screwdriver. Since ordering this memory module, I notice that Amazon is no longer offering it as an Amazon Prime item. Also, although the Mac manual calls for a PC2-5300 compliant module and Amazon's pictured product is listed as such, the Crucial module that I received is marked PC2-6300. I decided to shrug it off as an improvement. Installation took 10 minutes, longer than necessary because even after I felt and heard the reassuring click announcing the board was securely in place, it wasn't flush with the other board, extending too far out, in fact, for the cover to be screwed back on. Cause for a momentary sinking feeling, but not to worry. Even though the board seems set in place, try "muscling" it just a bit more. It'll resist but soon should yield just enough to be even with the other, in-place board. Now simply screw the cover back on (a single screw). But seriously, I have an MS in Computer Science, and have been fixing computers for years (think my best fix story was restoring a dead hp laptop with a "cooked" motherboard --geek squads words, not mine-- by jumping two power pins with a twisty tie... MacGuiver status right there; but I digress). Why do you need a 2 GB kit from Crucial? To up your RAM memory (or replace bad memory in rare cases) and up performance...duh! Doesn't stop there though. Crucial is by far the best performance and most stably build memory I've used since 72 pin SIMM EDO back in the day (though I don't think I ever purchased such ram from crucial). It's always been right for the price. Unless you're a hard core gamer, the basic crucial memory will work great. What is this business about better battery life? If your laptop has a hard drive and not a solid state drive, you have moving parts. Moving parts means motors and actuators and higher power consumption. I'll lend you this analogy: a hard drive is a filing cabinet, and RAM/memory is a desktop. When you need files from your filing cabinet, you pull them out, and put them on your desktop to write on... working out of the filing cabinet is not an option right? When your desktop gets too full though, and you need more stuff out of the cabinet you need to put files away to clean some space the new files (lets say it's tax seasons or something). Now if you're using on of those desks from elementary school, you're going to be pulling files and putting files back into the cabinet often right? Now if you're desktop is, lets say, a 4x10 foot kitchen counter, you can pull out a lot of files, and not need to put them back into the cabinet. In our analogy, it means we use the hard drive less often. Since the hard drive isn't moving, it requires less power, and thus less strain on the battery. Another benefit of this, it preserves the life of your hard drive (moving parts are subject to wear and tear; similar to a car). But shouldn't I be looking for like 8 GB or 16 GB? Depends on the computer. This 2 GB kit was ideal for an older Core 2 Duo laptop that was running a 32 bit version of Windows. It peaked the total memory of the computer to 4 GB, or which Windows could only use 3.5 GB (because it is 32 bit). If it's a newer computer, it's probably a 64 bit version of Windows in which case, this probably isn't the memory you need anyway (hardware-wise it won't fit... go to crucial.com, they have a tool to tell you what type of memory you could use). How much memory is enough memory? Depends on the user. Generally speaking if you see that hard drive light blinking (or you hear a lot of clicking) after the computer has been on for a while (analogy: the desk has all the commonly used files from the cabinet), that means, you need more memory... Generally. It might also mean you just need to do a fresh install of your operating system or remove some malware. To save the time and hassle, if up'ing the RAM is only a 20-30 dollar venture, its worth trying to see if it fixes the problem. Either way, it is a performance boost to your system. Summary (tl;dr): If you have a laptop that takes this type of ram, and it is increasing the amount of ram (with the caveat that anything above 3.5 GB's of RAM on a 32 bit version of Windows is essentially useless) you have in the system, it is worth it (especially at this price). It will prolong how long you can run on battery, make the computer snappier once fully booted, and prolong the totally life of your hard drive. I opened up and removed the small plastic cover on the bottom of my computer, released the clips holding the original supplied 1 GB memory card in place (when you release the clips, the card pops up for easy removal), replaced the original card with this one, replaced the cover, inserted the battery, and turned on the computer. This new memory card was instantly recognized. I did NOT have to press the F2 or F10 key. I do not know why some others had to do this (and I do not doubt their experiences) but, immediately after I installed the card and turned on the computer in the normal fashion, I checked the memory available - and there was my 2 GB of RAM showing. The entire mechanical installation process is quite simple and straightforward. The only tool necessary is a small Phillips-head screwdriver (mine came in a screwdriver set from Dollar Tree!) to remove the screws. Please note that, for the Asus Eee PC 1000 line, there are several YouTube videos which show in detail the whole process which takes no more than two or three minutes. The hardest part? Carefully removing the plastic cover on the back of the computer. The screws remove easily but there are several internal plastic clips on the sides of the cover (not visible) which must be released gently so as not to break them (they do seem robust, however). Once the cover is removed, actually removing and replacing the memory is simple. I have used Crucial memory cards in other laptop computers over the years and I have always found them to be completely reliable.
