PAPER QUALITY DROPS A LOT AFTER FIRST 40 PAGES- BUT EXCELLENT SUPPORT

VERY DISAPPOINTED !! I bought this based on good reviews however my experience was not so good. My background : I am an Engineer and I take and keep design notes copiously on a daily basis. For years I have used the AMPAD computation Note books but I decided to give TOPS spiral bound a chance. I use fountain pens for all my engineering notes. The first 40 pages or so of the notebook were joy to write on. Very nice finish and almost zero bleed through of ink to the other side and absolutely no blotting of ink (almost as good as Rhodia Pads). However from page 40 till page 63 the paper quality took a nose dive !! Almost like a bad quality blotting paper. Ink bleeds through to the other side and also acts like some kind of blotting paper. Looks like these pages were not coated with whatever the rest of the notebook is supposed to be coated with !! Besides I can even feel the difference in the paper quality and colour. I have attached a photo. Obviously a quality control issue and looks like I got a bad one.

UPDATE 3/17/2015:

I CONTACTED TOPS AND THEY IMMEDIATELY AGREED TO SHIP A REPLACEMENT FREE OF CHARGE AND ALSO TO LOOK INTO THE QC - GOOD JOB

The Ideal Notebook

This is the best computation notebook I have ever used. It is pre-numbered, which is AWESOME. The double spiral bind makes it sturdy and ensures that the wire doesn't start coming unwound. The size is also fantastic. It is large enough that you can tape a whole 8.5 X 11 inch piece of computer paper onto one of the pages and still have it neatly contained and not flowing over the edge of the notebook.

I'm kind of a paper junky, so here's my little rant on the paper quality in this notebook. The paper is niiiice. The kind of paper that your pencil or pen just glides over top of and actually imprints on. None of that glossy stuff. You know what I mean. It is thick and sturdy, and is also tinted a sort of dull yellow-tan. If you use F.lux on your computer, it looks like that tint. This is ideal for lab work, since you will likely be staring at it in a low light environment for a long time. It's essentially the perfect kind of paper to do computations on or use as a lab notebook. Glorious.

Finally, the front is a burnt orange color rather the red you see in the picture here. For me, this is a huge bonus, since it makes the notebook more muted.

10/10 do recommend.

I bought this notebook for my Microbiology lab. Not only is it big and has plenty of space to write, I love how it is bound by a ring. I was the only student in my lab to have a notebook that was bound by a ring and it is incredibly convenient and easier to jot down any notes/observations. The lines in the notebook are the perfect shade; not too dark, not too light. I will continue purchasing this lab notebook for any future labs I must take.

I use this notebook every day, this by far my preferred style of the notebook over the past 10 years so I decided to splurge on the spiral bound version. Without a doubt, I can say there's no going back to the paper bound style.

Why you might like this book:
- The spiral binding allows the book to lay flat without worry about creasing the pages or not being able to write on the backs. The spiral binding also allows you to easily tear out a page if you need to.
- The paper is very durable so you don't have to worry about ink bleeding through (unless you have a very leaky pen or permanent marker).
- The graph lines are great guides for notes, diagrams, drawings, etc. Whatever you need.
- They somehow look more professional than other styles of composition notebooks.
- The pages are numbered so you can easily create a table of contents if needed.
- There are blank pages in the front/back of the book for said table of contents.

For cons:
- If I'm on the same page for a couple days the page will start to tear out a little.
- You have to shut the notebook before packing it in a bag or else the page will definitely tear out.
- Pricey, it was hard to justify spending more than $15 on a notebook.

Superior Notebook

I bought one of these notebooks recently after using the similar Ampad 22-157 for many years. Recent reviews for that product warned of cheapened quality, so I figured I'd give TOPS a try.

This TOPS book is everything I have been accustomed to from the other company for 15 years.
- The paper is very heavy. I can write in pen, on both sides, in small print, and it is always legible. Cheaper paper blurs ink and bleeds through to the back.
- The pages are large and grid lined. There's plenty of room to add updates and annotations.
- The binder rings are sturdy. They don't bend or unravel, and they allow the book to be laid flat or folded all the way around.
- The pages and cover are sturdy, too. They don't tear loose.

The only doubt I have about this product is its value. $20 is a lot to pay for a notebook. The similar Ampad sells for $16-17 here on Amazon. How much has its quality dropped recently? I don't have a recent copy to compare.

A great lab notebook!

I had been using Ampad's 22-156 and similar as lab notebooks for over 20 years and they worked fine but I wasn't a big fan of the page binding. I hated having to keep the book lying wide open in order to write on the left hand side. When I needed a new notebook, I got whatever was available in our office supply cabinet and the TOPS 35061 was there. To me, paper quality seemed similar enough but I LOVE the fact it is spiral-bound and can be folded over on itself. When trying to write something down on a crowded optical table, you really don't want real estate taken up by an unusable half of a lab book. I bought a couple personally to have as backups but will be having our office manager order more of these in the future.
