Initially I was thrilled to find this book light. I have a desk top Verilux Natural Spectrum light and have been pleased with the natural spectrum light and it's performance. I was completely underwhelmed with the Verilux travel light. When I turned it on for the first time the high beam light was clear and bright. It completely illuminated the page. As I settled in to read, the light flickered. Within minutes it was flickering nonstop. Then the high beam setting completely failed. I was left with a subpar low beam light. This light was not sufficient to completely illuminate the page so I was forced to make adjustments to read the lower half of the page. I do not recommend this book light.
This light is bright enough for me to read by with no other illumination, but the optimal brightness appears to be 4in from the bulb. There's a distinct drop in intensity past that point. Also, there's a lot of light scatter from this lamp, so it's dim but still manages to be intrusive.
The quality of the light is slightly cool without having that too blue LED corpse-like quality, and if it were just brighter or better focused, I would be quite happy with this.
Yes, the clip is flimsy but I prefer it as a stand anyway. The battery cover is quite robust; don't hold the unit by the clip when trying to open the battery compartment or the clip will pop off before the cover does.
This reading light is okay if your using batteries or plug into a computer. The only way to read in bed or in a chair is by batteries. Why would you want to read a book attached to your computer.
Overall, I am happy with this and it is the best light I have found for use with a Kindle. I have added some velcro attachments (actually 3M Picture Hanging strips because they make it easier to attach and detach the light than it would be with Velcro) at the top back of the Kindle DX and use them to attach the light. The Light itself has a couple of pivots so it can be adjusted to minimize/eliminate a glare spot. It provides nice, relatively even light over the entire Kindle DX screen. A little brighter at the top than the bottom but not bad at all. I like that you can use re-chargeable batteries and that you can recharge them using a USB connector (provided, as is a carrying case). Only disappointment is the build quality. Just feels kind of cheap.
I bought my fiancee a Kindle for Christmas last year, and she really loves that. However, she finally mentioned to me how nice it would be to have a reading light to allow her to read in bed or otherwise in low light. I went about scouring the Net for reviews that indicated which of the scores of reading lights out there worked best for the Kindle. It didn't take very long to see multiple well written and glowing reviews for this interesting Verilux light that uses a cold cathode tube for illumination. This is different technology from conventional incandescent, LED, or even fluorescent lights, even though the nature of the lighting element on this Verilux is most similar (at least in terms of appearance) to fluorescents. However, there IS a difference, that being that this uses a highly efficient low energy version of the same basic technology as that used in conventional televisions. The result is a tiny tube about the thickness of a pencil lead extending the full 3" across the reflector head that evenly distributes a pleasingly white light for its full length. The light level is bright, but not so bright that it becomes unpleasant, and has two brightness selections. It has a very good integral clip that permits it to clip to the top of the Kindle, allowing the illumination to wash the full length of the screen, all the way down to the bottom. I also like that its slide switch has the "Off" position at one end and both of the brightness selections at the other, instead of (poor design if you see it) having the "Off" between the brightness selections. Having handled this light, I find myself puzzled at those who mention questioning its durability. I find it durable without being heavy, and I don't intend to use this to drive nails anytime soon. Another nice thing about this light is that it uses two ordinary AAA batteries, making it easy to find a fresh set to keep the light going if you run out of power. A very good idea that Verilux had when they designed this was to allow it to uses rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, charged with the included USB cable. You can even run the light with no batteries at all, using the USB alone for power, making for a handy way to read while sitting at your computer. I can make one suggestion to anyone who wants to use this with rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, which is to strongly recommend batteries labeled "Pre-Charged," as those batteries hold a charge while not being used considerably longer than those not so labeled. The pre-charged variety hold a charge for a couple of months, quite unlike the others, which self-discharge (run down while not in use) at a rate of approximately 10% per day. My fiancee is quite happy with this outstanding reading light, and I will recommend it to anyone else I know in need of a reading light, be it a Kindle user or an old school cardboard and paper reader.
I bought this on a whim. First and last product I buy without reading reviews first. Waste of money.
It is so freaking uncomfortable to attack to the book, and the light it gives off is not uniform at all, and its not even strong. It feel like cheap quality.
I read the reviews and bought it anyway. I wanted a little extra full-spectrum portable light at work, and it does provide that, but don't touch it or it falls apart. I am keeping it to clip on my computer screen at work but don't recommemd it, especially to someone who wants to clip it to a book!

I hold the Verilux brand in high regard as I have purchased and been pleased with their full-spectrum bulbs, lamps, and the popular "Happy Light", which I recommend. However, when I purchased this Verilux Book and Travel Light I found the quality to fall a bit short. It's a cute little item, handy, and very bright on the "high" setting, but I found that the unnecessary "medium" setting functions best as a night light. It requires frequent AA battery changes-once every 1-2 days, but does come with a recharging cord for a computer[like an i-pod has].
It wasn't quite as convenient as I'd hoped. Also with my daily use, the button that slides between medium and high has now broken, rendering it useless, so it has been more of a disposable light for me.
