Great stuff, and a lot of it

Great stuff, and a lot of it
I didn't quite realize exactly how much 4oz of .032" solder would be, but it is quite a bit. This solder is replacing some crappy lead free, thick solder that I bought from Radio Shack a few years ago (I basically didn't solder at all when I bought that stuff). So far, so good. It easily tinned a tip, melts nicely, stays shiny, and is the perfect thickness for working with electronics. I put a picture of twisted stranded 30AWG wire as a comparison. This thickness is so much easier to work with than larger or smaller ones for just general soldering on PCBs and such. Also, the flux inside seems pretty good, but I personally still use ChipQuik SMD-291 to make life easier.

I also have been using this solder for years. So, I agree with the rest of the reviews. It's sold at the local Ace and TruValue hardware stores. It used to be made here in the U.S.A.! It used to say Alpha Metals. Now, it's made in Mexico and says Alpha Fry. It's still the same Quality solder as before!

This solder roll is the 31605 which is the thin wire one. If you prefer a thicker wire, simply buy the 31604 roll. Except for the wire thickness, they're exactly the same. Both are 4 ounces, so you get the same amount of solder. Both are 60% tin and 40% lead, so you get the same percentage.

For some reason, most people buy the thicker wire 31604 here at Amazon. I prefer and recommend the thinner wire 31605 because you can use it for large and small projects. With the thicker 31604, you tend to apply too much solder in small projects.

I've been soldering for years, repairing and building things. Basically I'm a hobbyist-slash-repairist, not a professional soldering tech. I don't have fancy gear, just a $40 iron. What I can tell you is this solder is very easy to work with and you don't have to be a professional to notice! It melts and flows very nicely! I'm very happy with the joints I have made, they are structurally and electrically solid. PLUS, they look good!

I still use flux very generously to help speed up the heat transmission and isolate the work area. I also use heat sinks on my wires and "helping hands" alligator clips to manipulate wires and keep from getting burnt fingers. I expect this roll will probably last a couple of years for me, but when the time comes I will get this one again!

    5 stars! Great solder!

I buy/use only high-quality solder. There are only a few items and consumables that I refuse to skimp on and solder is one. If you have ever used low-quality, water-based flux core (@ <1%) solder, you know why it pays to buy high-quality consumables. As a Christmas gift this year, my kids bought me a couple of rolls of 60/40 0.032" flux-core solder. I wasn't familiar with Alpha Metals solder before using it but, after running through a few ounces I can say with certainty, it is quality solder. It flows well, wets the joints nicely and the flux does what it is supposed to.

This is high-grade, flux core solder at a reasonable price. I wouldn't hesitate recommending Alpha Metals solder to anyone who asks.

This works way better than the roll that came with my soldering iron.

Lead/tin solder is only kind I can make a decent solder joint with - I've tried the silver/tin combos but it takes so long to reach a melting point that my work looks like it was performed by a two-year old. I've used the Alpha products for years with great success. This review is more about Amazon and their amazing delivery system. I ordered this at 7:00PM on a Saturday evening and it gave me a delivery date of the following Monday which I assumed was a mistake since Saturday and Sunday are not postal business days. Imagine my shock when the delivery woman dropped it at my door at 11:00AM Monday morning. I'm not sure how Amazon does it - perhaps we should just give them the post office since they seem to know how to make it work.

This stuff is amazing! It melts and flows when heated with my soldering iron, then when I remove the iron, it re-solidifies, leaving the wires and electrical terminals permanently attached to one another. It even conducts electricity! Seriously, you really can't go wrong with solder from Alpha or Kester unless it has been sitting around for 50 years in a corrosive environment. How is it that these two companies have staved off the invasion of foreign suppliers? Must be doing something right. The retailer also deserves a share of credit--the correct item was delivered in a timely manner.

Amazing quality... however the package smelled like the warehouse, even with the solder still sealed inside the package.
I had a problem with shipping and would like to request that all solder and battery products be shipped separately from other items that are ordered.
Otherwise, I'd like to imagine this product works very well, as I've read many testimonies and have yet to fully try it myself. These products are very dangerous and it's recommended you use a well ventilated area, not inside your home or on your kitchen table but in a shop or private workspace. It's also bad for the environment and I am not quite sure how to throw it away or dispose of it when done using it.

This stuff is genuinely awful. It makes me want to try lead free solder so I can get a comparison - it acts like lead free solder. The only reference I have to lead free is repairing my own devices. This stuff won’t flow right, makes ugly joints, almost acts as if my flux isn’t even there.
