it could be a lot better. First

While it's convenient to have the NY Times available on the Kindle, it could be a lot better. First, not all the articles appear--that's particularly true with the Sunday Magazine section. Second, very few photos accompanying the articles are shown. Third, the puzzles aren't available. Very frustrating, particularly when you don't have access to the print version of the paper. All these could be easily remedied and produce a more satisfying result.

Time to Cancel My Kindle Subscription to the NYT?

I agree with other recent posts who've pointed out that the "Most Emailed" section has disappeared from the Kindle version of the NYT. This was a great way to catch up on articles I may have overlooked when they were first published. And add me to the list of subscribers who have been annoyed at the periodic absence of the Sunday magazine. And, even though I am considered an NYT subscriber by Amazon, the newspaper's website doesn't count me as such, and they want me to pay all over again in order to have unlimited access to their website. Such sloppiness is making me think it's time to cancel my subscription.

Winning Layout! Worth the extra $$

I have read the New York Times daily for about 20 years - and have been reading the digital version either on tablet or phone for about 4. While a huge Kindle reading fan / Amazon fan in general I held off on purchasing this version because of the price - but finally decided to give the free trial a go. What reviewers are missing here is the layout and daily delivery:

1. Daily delivery - unlike other electronic versions this is created / delivered once per day - delivered to your device - 0530 New York time. It is a new version each day - with new articles. What I dislike about other digital versions is that you never get a fresh version - articles are added but at times ill take many days to be removed. Articles are also added over the course of the day - very distracting.

2. The layout is incredible - and follows standard Kindle layout for books - with pages that turn instead of scrolling. In similar form to a Newspaper - this is clean and organized - this is the part that is worth the additional cost.

For me a winner - give it a no risk try - 14 days are free and if it is not for you simply cancel prior to your 14 days.

Not sure this edition is worth the money

This is a review of the format, not the newspaper itself. As others have noted, this is basically the print edition of paper, not updated once the edition goes to press. I don't have a problem with that, because this subscription also gives access to their web site where I can read the latest news. It is sometimes annoying that anything that appears as a chart in the physical paper is missing from the Kindle edition. For what they charge, you'd think they could do some special formatting for the Kindle edition.
I'm giving up my Kindle subscription reluctantly. I much prefer reading in black and white on my Kindle Paperweight to reading on a glowing screen. I find their website busy and distracting. I also like that the Kindle edition seems to be the NY edition that includes news of New York State politics. But I just can't justify paying twenty bucks a month when an electronic (web site plus apps) subscription is available on the Time's web site today for about eight bucks a month. Who knows, maybe I'll miss the Kindle version and come back.

For Dedicated Device Use Only

Limited use. How many times do I need to purchase to read? NYT for Kindle dedicated to particular device: Kindle tablet, or Kindle ereader-not both, mind you, without separate purchases, and not available- period- for the Kindle app on my IOS device (which I'm writing this review on now). Cannot fathom why the NYT wants to squeeze readers like this. Other magazines, newspapers, and, of course, books are available across Kindle devices with a single purchase. This is archaic and simply wrong-headed. When you buy something like the news, why would you want to buy the same thing again? Make the NYT available for multiple Kindle devices, for one subscription price. On a positive note, content is generally excellent. Shame you have to take out a loan if you want to read on different Kindle devices.

The quality of the images is very poor and the navigation is very clumsy. Worst of all, the Kindle edition is not included in the already high fee that NY Times subscribers pay for their so-called "All Digital Access."

As a US ex-pat living in London I'm used to getting my US news either from the International section of The Guardian or from webcasts. From time to time I'd pick up the New York Times from a newsagent, but you have to search it out and it runs a day late. How refreshing to have it beam onto my Kindle DX at around ten o'clock every morning.

Sure, not every single article that the print edition has makes it onto the Kindle version, but you get plenty there, from the front page, international, national, business, op-ed, and other supplements like science and others. What I like about the writing style of the NYT is that, very often, once the initial story has been outlined, a few paragraphs will be set aside to outline the context and history of the story, so that its wider implications are clear.

A great paper, and a joy to now receive everyday.

The NYT on kindle is every bit as good as the other reviews suggest, and, given the price of a hard copy in the UK, it is really excellent value. I was surprised at how well it worked on the Kindle - (I have a Kindle Touch) the formatting and so on really works extremely well. I haven't bought a subscription, I've just bought single issues about once a week - there is so much great content that I wouldn't have time to read it every day. It took me over 2 weeks to work my way through the Xmas issue (though I was not reading it continuously during those 2 weeks, obviously...). So far I have bought Kindle issues of 3 different newspapers and this is far and away the best.
