I mainly wanted the Elk to use to represent a character's mount in a Dungeons and Dragons table top role-playing game.

The Elk is roughly the appropriate size to use with the actual DnD and similar gaming miniatures.

Not all of the animal figures in the set are in the same *scale*, though they are roughly the same *size* to allow them to each fit well in a child's hands.

So, as toys they look reasonably realistic to the natural animals, but they are not designed as scale miniatures, though some might use them that way. You might want to pretend your Druid rides a giant racoon, for example.

I Like the Safari LTD Toobs. We had borrowed one for our Play School of 3-4 year olds last year (Arctic) and invented many circle time activities with it. The children are so proud of themselves learning all the animals names. We adapt songs, and games to play centered around the animals. This year we added the North American Animals and will be adding a few more as budget allows. They are a good size to add to our train table scenes throughout the year. One of our favorite games with Arctic was to pass around a mitten as each child put in their figure and we sang a song " The Arctic Fox goes in the mitten…etc. We also used them in our "Mystery Box". As we passed a box around and sang "What is in the Mystery Box" each child pulled an animal out…We then went around and asked them what they had and learned a bit about each animal…so many possibilities with these. The value of these for the quality and amount of play we get from them is high. For the North American Animals, I will have to think what we can pull them out off, as the Mitten was for the cold… I have some small green burlap bags that I could simply draw tree outlines on… I cannot wait to start using these. As a note… we don't concern ourselves so much with proper proportion size at ages 3-4…the kids are paying attention to the animal and we talk about where they live, what they eat, what color they are, what kind of coat they have…so many things…They are not thinking about whether or not proportions are correct…we use other activities for size differences.

UPDATE 12-4-2014: It's nice to see that someone is at least responsive to the content of this review. Almost immediately after posting this review, a picture of the individual animals posted along with an accurate description of the animals contained in the tube.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
So, I made a mistake. I assumed my soon-to-be-three-year-old wanted a dinosaur party. Who wouldn't? Dinosaurs are awesome. One week before his birthday, I mention the dino theme. He looks me straight in the eye and says, "No. I want a fox party." Huh? "You want a fox party?" Boy: "I want a fox party." Okay. I like a challenge.

And isn't this why we have Amazon Prime? For these last-minute moments when you can find almost anything you need for almost any situation.

Pinterest is awesome. Enough said. I decided to purchase small plastic woodland animals, make little paper party hats for the animals, and rubber cement them to the top of a plastic container that would contain homemade play dough. Easy peasy. And it was!

I love the Schleich and was willing to spend the money for the animals that we would keep. But they are too expensive to buy in bulk for goodie bags. I bought the "Safari Ltd. Wild Safari North American Wildlife Toob." I purchased this tube specifically for the animals listed on the description. Toob includes: "eagle, squirrel, fox, brown bear, brown bear cub, big cat, wild cat, moose calf, doe, buck, hare and wolf." Most of these animals were not included. Instead, the Toob included a buffalo, a goat, a ram, an otter, an elk, and another horned animal of some sort. It did include a white wolf (that's an arctic animal), a beaver, a mountain lion, a moose, a bear and a raccoon. WHERE IS MY FOX?! THE SQUIRREL? BEAR CUB? WILD CAT? DOE? HARE? THERE'S NO FOX!!!!!!!

The quality of the animals was okay. The animals in one tube were fine. The animals in the other tube were rough. Paint colors smeared onto other animals. Example: Picture bear brown on arctic fox and black marks on brown bear's face.

I didn't return the animals because I'm on a time crunch and cannot replace them and complete the project in time. (I will never again assume 1) that he has no opinion about the type of party, and 2) ask sooner!) But it's so disappointing to use these animals instead of the woodland animals I needed. Party hat placement was a challenge. And these are not the animals I needed or wanted.
See the picture below. Even though most of the woodland animals are missing, they came out really cute.

Our Forest Toob arrived promptly and contains pretty much all the animals listed in the description on the Amazon site: raccoon, mountain lion, white wolf, mountain goat, grizzly bear, river otter, elk, moose, beaver, bison, pronghorn and big horn ram. Perhaps would have been good to have a bird in the selection as well, but it's a big ask to squeeze all creatures from a forest habitat into a single little tube.

The figures are only 5-7 cm big, but the level of detail, even footprints, is great. All fit back into the tube, and the tube's lid has a little clasp, which is very useful - I lost count of lost plastic lids from other miniature tubes.

I bought these for my 3.5 year old boy to play with and to study animals of North America. Not all of these are exclusive to North America, though, many are also native in Europe, so will be able to reuse. All in all, very happy with a purchase.
