This is the most versatile tool I have ever used. Rather than the 500 dollar rework hot air guns the heating mode is AWESOME. I'm an engineer who does rather shabby work and this tool makes me look more professional than my 30 years of making electronic toys.
The soldering mode is very powerful and can work small or large sinks side by side.
I broke one putting it in the soldering holder where the hot air was blowing down at the table. It somehow overheated something in the unit and its not really possible to "mail" back full of butane. The warranty is therefore useless on this item. Keep it nearly horizontal between uses and idling, also read the ignition instructions. Its not a ligher there is a special way you need to hold the button down for multiple seconds to get it to ignite. Its so badass I immediately bought another one.
Oh and it looks so awesome. The clear window to see the compressed gas and the fine workmanship of the body of the device. Home run cooper tools ...
The Pyropen heats up quickly, has adjustable temperature and a variety of tips to choose from. My only grumble is watching the fingers from that exhaust port. But if you want a portable soldering iron, this is it. I've tried almost every other gas and battery-powered unit out there, and nothing else is even close. Extremely reliable.
As a test engineer, I set up many electrical tests. These tests require 30AWG instrumentation wire soldered onto the wires of electrical harnesses, which sometimes can be into the thousands of circuits. I use a Weller digital soldering station for this task when assembling these harnesses on the bench before they are plugged into the test fixtures. Many times when fixturing these massive harnesses into position inside environmental chambers, the 30AWG wire will sometimes break, or more circuits are to be instrumented as they are inside the environmental chambers. This is where the butane soldering iron comes in.
The iron performed flawlessly. I cannot attest to the three hour usage on a single charge of butane, as stated in the description. I can say that the iron is ready to use almost immediately, though the description says ready to use in thirty seconds. I have used this so far soldering 30AWG wire to circuits as large as 10AWG wire using lead-free solder with impressive results using the supplied chisel tip. The build quality is top notch; even the plastic parts feel of stout construction. No disappointment whatsoever!
This is my 4th one. I am an Audio Visual installer, and am definitely a heavy user, but these are not the most reliable items. When you have to click it 20 times to light it, it gets very annoying, and you can't manually ignite them with a lighter. Eventually they just stop working, and this one is replacing one that melted itself on a job site.
BUT, they are ridiculously handy when working up high, anywhere you can't get mains power, or where a proper station is not practical. Gets to temperature very quickly and the tips have great heat capacitance. In spite of the reliability issues, I still recommend.

Lights everytime with ease.
Is very powerful and can solder large wires.
No silly multiple safety switches and crap.
